Expanded Notation
Definition:
In expanded notation, the number is written as the
sum of the place value of the digits in the number.Ways to do expanded notation:
Expanded notation includes another step, where each digit is multiplied by the appropriate place value
For example: 345 = 3 x 100 + 4 x 10 + 5 x 1- Case 1: For one-digit numbers:
- We take the single-digit number and multiply it with 1 - Case 2: For two-digit numbers:
- We identify the tens digit and the units digit.
- Then we multiply the tens digit with 10, and the units digit with 1 - Case 3: For three-digit numbers:
- We identify the tens, the hundreds and the units digit in that number
- Then we multiply the units digit with 1, the tens digit with 10, and the hundreds digit with 100
