Building a Canoe
Tree trunk used in building the canoe
- Select a tall tree with thick trunk and lesser branches
- Ensure that the bark does not get damaged while cutting down the tree
- Split the bark along the length
- Select the trunk in the season when sap is full
- Bark should not have holes
Building a canoe steps
- Spread the bark on ground inside downwards
- Stretch it with stones and logs of wood
- Gently bend the edge of the bark to form the sides of the boat
- Bend the bark to form the shape of the boat
- Fix sticks on the ground 3 or 4 feet apart forming the curved inside of the boat
- Ribs are made of tough hickory cut into long flat pieces bent to form the shape of boat
- Sew the poles to make it water tight
- Place bands across the top of the ribs
Safety precautions on the canoe
- It is a frail structure and has to be treated tenderly
- Tred barefoot since the bottom gets crushed easily
Uses of the canoe
- 3 or 4 persons can easily float
- In war canoes dozens of Indians can float
- With long paddles and strong arms, the canoe can move with great speed
