Lumos StepUp - PARCC Online Practice and Assessments - 8th Grade Mathematics

Standard:

Common Core State Standard: 8.EE.B.6

Domain: Expressions & Equations

Theme: Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations

Standard Description: Use similar triangles to explain why the slope m is the same between any two distinct points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y =mx for a line through the origin and the equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at b.

Question:

Bill is building a ramp for his grandmother so her wheelchair can be easily pushed into her home. The vertical height of the ramp is three feet. He constructs the ramp to be 12 feet long. The ramp is sketched on a coordinate plane with the base of the ramp at the origin and the x-axis representing ground level.

If each unit on the graph represents1 foot on the ramp, what are the coordinates of the top of the ramp?
