An independent clause contains a subject, a verb, and a complete thought. A dependent clause contains a subject and a verb, but no complete thought. 1. A SIMPLE SENTENCE has one independent clause.

A sentence with two or more independent clauses plus one or more dependent clauses is called compound-complex or complex-compound. In addition to a subject and a verb, dependent clauses contain a subordinating conjunction or similar word.

A complex sentence contains an independent clause and a dependent clause. An example of a complex sentence is this: “I burned dinner but not the cake.” 4) Compound-complex sentences contain two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
