00:05 Hello , readers . Today we are going to focus
00:09 on another good reader behavior that involves illustrations . Have
00:14 you ever heard the phrase A picture is worth 1000
00:17 words ? People use that phrase to describe just how
00:21 powerful images can be in helping us visualized or understand
00:26 ideas . When we read , It's so important to
00:32 pay attention to illustrations and images . Toe help us
00:36 better understand the story . Sometimes pictures can help us
00:41 understand the setting , how characters act and feel and
00:46 what happens during the beginning , middle or end of
00:49 a story . We are going to use the book
00:53 . Amelia and Eleanor go for a ride toe .
00:56 Help us understand how to use illustrations . This story
01:00 is written by Pam . You Knows Ryan and illustrated
01:04 by Brian Selznick . This book is historical fiction about
01:10 two real people . The story is based on Amelia
01:13 Earhart , the first woman to fly solo across the
01:16 Atlantic Ocean , and Eleanor Roosevelt , the first lady
01:20 of the United States in the 19 thirties and how
01:23 they were friends . The story begins with Amelia being
01:28 invited to the White House by Eleanor . When sitting
01:31 at the table , Amelia learns that Eleanor received her
01:34 student pilot's license , and she offers to teach Eleanor
01:39 how to fly . Eleanor responds by asking , I
01:43 accept . What is it like to fly at night
01:46 in the dark ? As written in the book ,
01:50 Amelia says , Everyone at the table leave closer to
01:54 here . Very few people in the world that ever
01:57 flown at night and Amelia was one of them .
02:00 Emilia's eyes sparkled , the stars glitter all about and
02:05 seemed close enough to touch at higher elevations . The
02:09 clouds below shine white with dark islands where the night
02:12 see shows through . I've seen the planet Venus setting
02:17 on the horizon and I've circled cities of twinkling lights
02:22 . As a reader , it's important for me to
02:24 use the illustration to gain a better understanding of what
02:27 Amelia is explaining about flying at night . I can
02:30 see from the picture the excitement in Emilia's face as
02:34 she explains what it's like to fly at night .
02:37 I see the dinner guests trying to imagine what the
02:40 night sky might look like , Their eyes air closed
02:43 in . Stars appear around them as if they are
02:46 visualizing . They seem in awe of what Amelia is
02:51 describing . One woman has her hand over her heart
02:55 . Without this picture , we wouldn't know how in
02:58 awe they are a flying and of Amelia . As
03:03 the story continues , Amelia and Eleanor decided to fly
03:05 over the capital city toward Baltimore at night , Amelia
03:09 says when asked about what the capital city looks like
03:12 . There's no describing it . You just have to
03:15 experience it on a clear night . When you conceive
03:18 forever , why we should go tonight We could fly
03:21 the loop to Baltimore and back in no time .
03:24 The Secret Service men protest it . This hasn't been
03:28 approved . Nonsense , said Eleanor . If Amelia Earhart
03:33 can fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean , I can
03:36 certainly take a short flight to Baltimore and back .
03:40 No , I can't forget to look at the picture
03:42 on this page . I see the faces of Eleanor
03:44 and Amelia . Their faces show that they are thrilled
03:48 to be able to experience a night flight together .
03:51 Their faces also show their braveness that despite the secret
03:54 services , protests and the possible danger of the flight
03:58 , they were ready to fly together Last This photo
04:02 shows me the admiration these two women have for each
04:04 other that they trust one another and rely on each
04:07 other to defy the odds . Then Amelia and Eleanor
04:12 make their way into the sky as it states in
04:15 the book . Out the window , the Potomac River
04:19 glistened with moonshine . The Capitol dome reflected a soft
04:24 golden halo , and the enormous , light drenched monuments
04:29 looked like tiny miniatures . Later on the page ,
04:33 it says , Eleanor marveled , It's like sitting on
04:37 top of the world's . Even though the author uses
04:43 thes words to create a picture in our mind ,
04:45 it's hard to imagine . But then we turn the
04:48 page and see this illustration . This picture shows the
04:53 glistening of the Capitol building and the sparkle of the
04:55 city at night . It helps us understand the setting
04:59 and what the characters are experiencing at this moment in
05:01 the story . This also helps us understand the character
05:05 of Amelia , why she wanted to fly and the
05:09 excitement of flying in an airplane . As you can
05:14 see , readers Amelia and Eleanor go for a ride
05:17 is a great example of how illustrations can help us
05:19 gain Ah , better understanding of character setting and Platt
05:24 in a story illustrations air used to help better support
05:28 the author's words . So when you read , make
05:31 sure to pay attention to illustrations to help you become
05:33 a better reader .
