00:0-1 | Hello , Grammarians . Hello , Rosie . Hi ,
00:01 | David . How are you ? Good . How are
00:03 | you ? Good . Today we're going to talk about
00:05 | run ins and comma splices . So a run on
00:09 | sentence is what happens when two independent clauses or put
00:13 | together in one sentence without any punctuation or coordinating conjunctions
00:18 | like and but or so rosy . What is a
00:22 | good example of a run on sentence ? We bought
00:27 | nails . We bought a hammer . Yeah , so
00:29 | we can see that this sentence contains to , uh
00:34 | , to individual independent clauses . So we've got number
00:37 | one . We bought nails number two . We bought
00:41 | a hammer . Now there are a couple of different
00:42 | ways we could make this a legal sentence . But
00:44 | right now , as it stands , this is a
00:46 | run on . Right ? So there are a couple
00:48 | ways we could fix this sentence . One way would
00:51 | be just to add a semi colon in there .
00:53 | So you've got to independent clauses . We bought nails
00:57 | , semi colon . We bought a hammer , right
01:00 | ? Another way you could do that would be to
01:02 | just Atacama and then the conjunction . And so you're
01:06 | connecting those two clauses . So this is this is
01:09 | a run on sentence without this and in this comma
01:11 | . And it's called that because it's sort of like
01:14 | a runaway train . You know , it doesn't have
01:17 | enough stoppage in it . That's how I would put
01:20 | it . So that's what a run on sentences on
01:23 | . Now I want to talk about comma splicing and
01:25 | the word spice . Not a super common term if
01:29 | you are neither a sailor or a film editor ,
01:32 | Um , but splicing is a word that originally meant
01:36 | to take two ropes . Untangle them and we've them
01:39 | back together . It's a sailor's term related to rope
01:42 | lines , in our case for grammar . Ah ,
01:45 | splice . A comma splice is an inappropriate joining of
01:50 | two independent clauses by using a comma . So So
02:02 | , Rosie , this is little Tony crime Fighting pony
02:05 | . So , for example , in this sentence ,
02:07 | I love Little Tony to pony up two . The
02:10 | Streets . It's my favorite movie in the little Tony
02:12 | franchise , very fine Siris of non existent films .
02:16 | The problem with this sentence is that right now it's
02:19 | got this comma in the middle of it on this
02:23 | comma inappropriately joins these two independent clauses . Oh ,
02:28 | and this whole time I forgot to say to independent
02:34 | clauses inappropriately joined by a comma . So okay ,
02:38 | so we've got independent Clause number one . Remember ,
02:39 | this thing could stand on its own as a sentence
02:42 | . I love the name of this movie . I
02:44 | love Little Tony to pony up . Two . The
02:45 | streets that could be its own sentence on its own
02:47 | ended with a period period . It's my favorite movie
02:50 | and the little Tony franchise , period . But we
02:53 | have these two independent clauses , right ? Um ,
02:56 | we cannot join them with just a comma . We
03:00 | could say I love little Tony to pony up two
03:02 | . The streets comma and it's my favorite movie in
03:05 | the little Tony franchise . Or as we did in
03:07 | the previous example , we could also throw in a
03:11 | semi colon , which is , I think , what
03:12 | I would rather do . I love Little Tony to
03:14 | pony up . Two . The streets , semi colon
03:16 | . It's my favorite movie in the little Tony franchise
03:18 | , and Rosie , you will notice that I have
03:20 | underlined these things titles because these are the names of
03:25 | published works , even though we made them up .
03:28 | Exactly , but okay , but for real , I
03:29 | would love to see , like a little Tony crime
03:32 | fighting pony . Totally so to review , um ,
03:36 | when you're looking at a run on . You're looking
03:38 | at two independent clauses that air together in one sentence
03:42 | that are joined inappropriately without punctuation or conjunctions . Eso
03:46 | we bought nails . We bought a hammer . There's
03:49 | there's not really a place to know where the division
03:52 | between clauses is in that on , so the thing
03:57 | to do is tow . Either is to add some
03:58 | kind of is the Atacama on Cem Conjunction or to
04:04 | combine them using a semi colon the same deal with
04:07 | a comics place ? It's just that a comics place
04:10 | is a run on that hasn't been fixed all the
04:12 | way , right ? The Commons being used . But
04:16 | we need some bigger punctuation in place of the Kama
04:20 | , something like a semi colon . In order ,
04:22 | Thio make a distinction between those two independent clauses .
04:26 | So that is how you identify and fix run ons
04:29 | and commerce places . You can learn anything . David
04:32 | out , Rosie out |
