One of the oldest holidays that we still celebrate is New Year's Day. It is known to have first been celebrated around four thousand years ago. It was first celebrated in the ancient city of Babylon. Actually, the first New Year's celebrations were during the spring season, and instead of just lasting one day they lasted eleven. It was originally established to celebrate the planting of new crops. Now, as we all know, New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1. The reason the month of January was chosen for this celebration was that it is named after Janus, a Roman god. He is always pictured with two heads. One head looks ahead to the upcoming year, and the other head looks back to the year that had just passed.
