Sample Question: Read the two short fables to find the moral and choose your own point of view.

A. Once a gazelle was running as fast as she could possibly go to outrun a lion who was pursuing her. She had a good lead and was probably going to outrun the lion when she came to a river. Although she could swim, the water looked cold and uninviting. She hesitated on the bank of the river, not wanting to jump in. While she debated, the lion overtook her, and she became his dinner.

B. Once a gazelle was running as fast as she could possibly go to outrun a lion who was pursuing her. She had a good lead and was probably going to outrun the lion when she came to a river. Without looking, she jumped into the water where a crocodile was waiting, and she became his dinner.

What is the moral of Fable B?

  1. He who hesitates is lost.
  2. Look before you leap.
  3. One’s actions do not reflect one’s fate.
  4. Running away never solves the problem.

Answer Explanation: “Look before you leap,” is the best moral for fable B since it describes what the gazelle should have probably done. If the gazelle had looked in the river before jumping, it could have possibly seen the crocodile. The other answer choices do not pertain to fable B.

Sample Question: Everything in nature follows a pattern. Circles, lines, spirals, and angles are repeated to make a design or a pattern. Patterns in nature are not just pretty adornments. They serve a purpose that has helped nature survive and flourish.
Have you ever taken a close look at a beehive? Well, not too close or you might get stung! The natural pattern in beehives is so perfect that it seems to be computer designed. The hives are made up of layers and layers of cells. Each cell has six perfectly equal sides or hexagons. Why would bees build six-sided cells, instead of round, or box shaped ones? The reason is because the bee is a genius at geometry and architecture! Six-sided cells use up every bit of space and allow bees to get the maximum area for storing honey. Also, Hexagons use the least honeycomb wax because all six sides are identical in length. The bees don’t waste space, material, or effort. Aren’t they smart insects?
What is the above passage telling us?

  1. It’s introducing the reader to patterns.
  2. It tells us how bees makes use of patterns.
  3. It tells us how patterns are used only by people.
  4. It tells us how bees have limited intelligence.

Answer Explanation: The answer to this question is B, referencing how bees make patterns. The other choices are not possible according to this text.

Sample Question: Miriam is writing a letter to the maker of her favorite clothing company to complain about a pair of jeans that she recently bought.

Which of the following sentences would be MOST APPROPRIATE for the beginning of her letter?

  1. Your jeans are the greatest ever.
  2. I have always been very happy with your clothing, until my most recent purchase.
  3. I will eagerly await your reply.
  4. First of all, my jeans could not be worn after the first wash.

Answer Explanation: Answer choice B is most appropriate. Choice A would not support a complaint. Choice C is typically a closing remark. Answer choice D begins with “first of all,” and would not typically start this type of letter.
