00:0-1 Welcome to Math with mr J . In this video
00:05 , I'm going to specifically be covering the upper quartile
00:09 . This is going to give us a better understanding
00:11 of what the upper quartile is and represents . It
00:15 will also give us a better understanding of core tal's
00:19 overall . Now chortled divide datasets into quarters or four
00:23 equal parts . The upper quartile is going to be
00:27 the 75% mark within our data . So the 75th%ile
00:33 , it separates the upper 25% from the lower 75%
00:40 . So let's jump into our example to see exactly
00:43 what this means and looks like . So we have
00:46 nine numbers within our data set here and the first
00:50 thing we always want to do is put the data
00:53 in order from least to greatest . Also known as
00:57 ascending order . In this case we are already in
01:02 order so we can move to the next step .
01:05 We now need to find the median which is the
01:08 middle of our data , the 50th%ile . And since
01:12 we have nine numbers within our data set here ,
01:16 we're going to have four numbers on the left and
01:19 four numbers on the right . The number in the
01:21 middle is our median and it's going to be this
01:25 eight right here . So four numbers on the left
01:29 , four numbers on the right and our middle number
01:32 there , eight is our median to recap . So
01:35 median equals eight . Now , once we have our
01:43 median we need to take a look at the upper
01:46 half of our data . So these four numbers right
01:52 here and we need to find the median or middle
01:55 of that upper half . That's going to be our
01:58 upper quartile . Now , since we have four numbers
02:02 in our upper half , we will not have one
02:05 specific number sitting in the middle . We will have
02:08 to take a look at the middle two numbers and
02:11 find what is in between . And we'll do that
02:14 by finding the average between them . So our two
02:17 middle numbers 10 And 14th , so we need to
02:21 find the average and that's going to give us the
02:23 middle or median of that upper half . So down
02:28 here I'm going to put Q three equals so Q
02:33 three means quartile three . That's the same thing as
02:37 upper quartile or 75th percentile , all of those mean
02:42 the same thing . So we need to find the
02:44 average and we can do that by adding those two
02:47 numbers together and then dividing by two . So 10
02:52 plus 14 and then Divide by two . so 10
02:58 plus 14 Gives us 24 and divide by two ,
03:04 we get 12 . So our upper quartile is 12
03:10 . This means that 75% of our data is less
03:15 than 12 and 25% is greater than 12 . So
03:20 I'm going to make some marks in our data to
03:22 help us visualize and understand all of this and I'll
03:26 start with the median which again was eight , so
03:30 this was our median , it's the midpoint of our
03:34 data . The 50th percentile , it splits our data
03:38 in half . Now the upper quartile was between 10
03:42 and 14 at 12 so it lies right here and
03:49 without going into detail our lower quartile is going to
03:53 be between two and four . I cover that in
03:56 another video I'll add that link down in the description
03:59 . So those are our quartile is we split our
04:02 data into four equal parts one , two , three
04:11 and four . So our focus was the upper quartile
04:16 which was right there . So to the left of
04:20 that We have 75% of our data to the right
04:27 of our upper quartile . We have 25% of our
04:33 data . So there you have it . There's an
04:35 explanation of the upper quartile . I hope that helped
04:39 . Thanks so much for watching until next time peace
04:45 mm .
