| 00:30 | this ? What do people even do at a technology | |
| 00:33 | institute ? Well um it is filled with people who | |
| 00:36 | do many exciting things . We call these people engineers | |
| 00:41 | . Not that kind of engineer . Yeah and scientists | |
| 00:48 | . But what does that even mean ? And where | |
| 00:50 | does the math fit in ? Let's start with some | |
| 00:53 | basic definitions . An engineer is someone who uses scientific | |
| 00:58 | knowledge and math to develop solutions to problems . There | |
| 01:02 | are people who develop technology that lets you build bridges | |
| 01:07 | , drive cars , cure diseases and many other things | |
| 01:12 | that make the world a better place . Humans have | |
| 01:16 | been doing engineering for a long time . One very | |
| 01:19 | uh primitive way of describing engineering is that engineers use | |
| 01:24 | the knowledge they have to solve problems when humans first | |
| 01:28 | invented the wheel . That was a solution to the | |
| 01:30 | problem of how can we move heavy things around by | |
| 01:35 | learning more and more and solving one problem after another | |
| 01:38 | . Humans have been able to accomplish some pretty great | |
| 01:41 | feats . How does science differ from engineering ? Well | |
| 01:47 | , if an engineer uses knowledge to solve problems , | |
| 01:50 | the main job of a scientist is to find more | |
| 01:52 | knowledge . Scientists explore things in nature , trying to | |
| 01:57 | figure out how the universe works . Scientists use the | |
| 02:00 | scientific method to figure out more about the world around | |
| 02:04 | us . The scientific method basically means make a guess | |
| 02:08 | about what you think , maybe going on and then | |
| 02:11 | do very structured experiments to see if you're right or | |
| 02:14 | not . Yeah . Yeah . Yeah . Scientists and | |
| 02:35 | engineers often work together . So if we were making | |
| 02:39 | a wheel , a scientist would start by thinking about | |
| 02:41 | how stones work . What kind of molecules make up | |
| 02:45 | stones ? How can we change them ? Mm . | |
| 02:48 | Yeah . Yeah . Then the engineer would take that | |
| 02:54 | knowledge and try to figure out if I want to | |
| 02:57 | move something heavy . Can I use a stone to | |
| 02:59 | solve my problem ? How would I do that ? | |
| 03:07 | Yeah . Mhm . So the actual line between scientists | |
| 03:22 | and engineers can be pretty thin . Scientists often need | |
| 03:26 | to engineer ways to do experiments . And engineers use | |
| 03:29 | knowledge from science in order to solve problems and that | |
| 03:33 | way the to support each other . Many people you've | |
| 03:36 | probably heard of are pretty famous for both like thomas | |
| 03:40 | Edison or Benjamin franklin . Science isn't the only thing | |
| 03:44 | that engineers use to design things . Both engineers and | |
| 03:49 | scientists use math in order to solve problems as well | |
| 03:53 | . Math can be used to describe how things in | |
| 03:55 | the world behave . And engineers and scientists use that | |
| 03:59 | knowledge to their advantage . Humans have come a long | |
| 04:02 | way since the beginning of our engineering days engineers try | |
| 04:07 | to solve problems in all different corners of society and | |
| 04:10 | that's led to many different kinds of engineers . There | |
| 04:13 | are mechanical engineers . Mhm . Electrical engineers . Mhm | |
| 04:21 | . Chemical engineers , yeah . Mhm . Software engineers | |
| 04:32 | , biological engineers , nuclear engineers and many more . | |
| 04:43 | Sometimes engineers can combine multiple disciplines in order to create | |
| 04:47 | something really amazing here in SAn Bacon's lab at MIT | |
| 04:52 | . They combine mechanical and electrical engineering in order to | |
| 04:56 | create robots inspired by biology . Here , you can | |
| 04:59 | see a design for a robot cheetah . Hopefully , | |
| 05:02 | now , you know a little bit more about how | |
| 05:04 | science engineering and math can make the world a better | |
