00:18 nope Hotel . What's so crazy about its orbiting around
00:22 Earth ? Oh so it's a space hotel , yep
00:25 . The ad said you could float around because there's
00:27 no gravity out there . Well that's wrong . I
00:30 know . Looks like we're going to have to go
00:32 back into space and clear up some missing substance .
00:35 I'll get my space suit . Hi , we're interested
00:39 in a trip to your orbiting space hotel . Why
00:41 certainly just step . Hey , I remember you guys
00:46 . What did I do wrong this time you said
00:48 that there's no gravity in Earth orbit ? Well there's
00:51 not people are floating around up there . There is
00:55 gravity . You just can't feel the effects of it
00:58 . I'm going to get another science lesson . Aren't

01:06 some really nice equipment right here . We're only about
01:10 370 km , 230 miles from Earth's surface Compared to
01:16 the radius of the Earth , which is about 6400
01:19 km or 4000 miles . That's a really small distance
01:23 . And as a result , the force of gravity
01:26 is almost as much as it is on the surface
01:28 of the Earth , it's only about 10% less .
01:30 But why are we floating ? Gravity is pulling on
01:36 us , but we don't feel its effects . Think
01:39 about throwing a ball on Earth . I think we've
01:41 got a human to help us demo this . Excellent

01:47 a parabolic arc and curves downward until it hits the
01:50 ground . If you throw the ball harder , it

02:11 important . We shoot the ball slowly and it curves
02:14 towards Earth in one of those parabolic arcs . Exactly
02:18 . We shoot the ball a little faster and it
02:20 goes farther , but it still comes back to hit
02:23 Earth even faster . The ball goes halfway around the
02:26 world , but it still hits Earth . When we
02:30 shoot the ball fast enough , it still curves towards
02:33 Earth . But the curve of the parabolic arc is
02:36 the same as the curve of Earth's surface . So
02:39 the ball is falling towards Earth , but it's going
02:42 so fast in the horizontal direction that it never hits
02:45 the surface of Earth . Okay , so that's why
02:49 my hotel stays in orbit and doesn't crash into Earth
02:52 . My insurance company will be happy to hear that
02:54 . Well actually there's a really tiny bit of Earth's
02:57 atmosphere up here and that's enough to cause drag drag
03:01 slows down your hotel and lowers the orbit . So
03:04 in a few years your hotel will actually crash into
03:08 Earth . But don't worry you can use rockets to
03:11 boost it higher . Okay , we'll deal with that
03:14 in a sec . But getting back to the topic
03:15 at hand , you still haven't told me why we're
03:18 floating . Right , good point . The hotel and
03:21 us and everything else on board are all falling around
03:25 the Earth at the same rate . It's like a
03:27 really tall elevator , say you're at the top and
03:30 the rope is cut , The elevator starts falling with
03:32 us in it . Since we're falling at the same
03:34 rate as the elevator , we can float around nifty
03:38 . It's just like you're orbiting hotel except the elevator
03:41 eventually crashed . Looks like you guys should stick to
03:45 floating in space . Huh . Ouch . So I
03:49 shouldn't be advertising that there's no gravity in my orbiting
03:52 space hotel , nope . That's wrong . But I
03:56 can say that people will feel weightless and float around
03:59 free from the effects of gravity . Sure . And
04:02 they won't crash into the Earth either . Not as
04:04 long as you rig up those booster rockets . Well
04:06 , this has been great . I've learned some stuff
04:09 . You haven't put this company out of business ,
04:10 like the last one , so thanks . You're welcome

04:15 trips to space . Wait , who said this was
