00:02 | society hold . We are the most complex technology on
00:11 | the planet . Our bodies hold by thousands of years
00:15 | of evolution . Our brains capable of billions of calculations
00:20 | per second opposition on the food chain . The top
00:26 | we are humans bow down before our physiological majesty ,
00:33 | pierre us . Okay , so this might be our
00:38 | weak point . Or is it I mean ? Yeah
00:43 | , mucus is the stuff that uses out of us
00:45 | when we're sick , but it's also one important defense
00:48 | mechanism . Our body sets up to protect us .
00:50 | She would know so mucus , which is the stuff
00:54 | that we call . It's not actually everywhere like it's
00:56 | human motor oil , it's not just in your nose
00:58 | , it's on your eyes and your throat , long
01:01 | stomach intestines . Lady parts , good parts . In
01:05 | fact the stuff that makes up mucus is between almost
01:07 | every single cell in your body and it's so important
01:10 | that you make a gallon of it every day and
01:13 | all this mucus protects you in a ton of different
01:16 | ways . The first way is by moisturizing . See
01:19 | mucus is a mesh work made up of these proteins
01:22 | with all these long sugars branching off of it .
01:24 | And this combo is called a musician and it combined
01:27 | two and retain an insane amount of water . Big
01:31 | deal . Right ? Well , it is a big
01:33 | deal . Without that moisture , you wouldn't be able
01:35 | to eat without ripping up your esophagus . Your eyes
01:38 | would dry out and you wouldn't be able to blink
01:40 | and your airways lungs and throat wouldn't be able to
01:42 | trap particles and get rid of them . Which brings
01:44 | me to way number two , your body constantly secretes
01:49 | mucus when your eyes tear up or you blow your
01:52 | nose or you cough or you swallow your post nasal
01:55 | drip or you go to the bathroom by trapping unwanted
02:00 | particles . This mucus system is like a car wash
02:03 | that's constantly flushing out . Germs before they have a
02:05 | chance to take hold mm Thank you . So this
02:13 | is fakes not made out of corn syrup , gelatin
02:16 | and water and it's disgustingly convincing and would do a
02:19 | decent job at moisturizing and protecting against particles . But
02:23 | real mucus is loaded with immune cells that fight bacteria
02:26 | and viruses and the chemical structure of musicians keeps bacteria
02:30 | moving by giving them handholds to propel themselves on .
02:34 | If bacteria stop moving , they could clump together to
02:37 | form biofilms which even the toughest antibiotics can't always kill
02:42 | . Researchers are trying to learn from our own bodies
02:46 | natural defenses to understand and fight infections . In fact
02:50 | studying mucus could help us with a lot of different
02:52 | things , antibiotic resistance cavities and our teeth , respiratory
02:56 | disease , even preterm labor . My research group is
02:59 | trying to see if we can use mucus to predict
03:02 | if a woman is at risk of delivering a baby
03:05 | too early and mucus doesn't just sit there , it
03:09 | changes and adapts to its environment . For example ,
03:12 | cervical mucus now you ladies don't want random stuff getting
03:15 | in your uterus and mucus helps protect against germs .
03:18 | But when a woman wants to have a baby that
03:21 | mucus has to somehow let sperm through and it does
03:24 | when she violates it physically and biologically changes to let
03:28 | that happen . And when mucus does let stuff like
03:31 | good bacteria or sperm or certain particles through it doesn't
03:35 | get ripped up but instead restores its original mechanical property
03:39 | and self heals . Which is something that's so crazy
03:42 | that not a single man made material can do nearly
03:45 | as well or as easily . So see we are
03:49 | majestic specimens of life on earth . We are humans
03:53 | bow down before us , Hear us ! You okay
