00:0-1 So this is hydrogen peroxide . You might recognize it
00:02 from your first aid kit because it's really good at
00:04 killing germs , but there's more to this guy than
00:07 cleaning cuts . So this liquid is actually made up
00:10 of molecules that are constantly wanting to break apart hydrogen
00:14 peroxide or H202 is held together by an unstable bond
00:18 , this one between the oxygen atoms . So the
00:21 molecule wants to break down into smaller , more stable
00:24 pieces H 20 or water , and 02 or oxygen
00:28 gas . Now this breakdown is usually so slow we
00:31 can't even see it happening . But what if we
00:33 did want to see it happen ? We can speed
00:36 up this reaction a lot by using yeast used to
00:40 make something called cattle A's . And what this does
00:42 is speed up the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide . And
00:45 something that speeds up a chemical reaction is called a
00:47 catalyst . And the reason use to make cattle A's
00:49 is because hydrogen peroxide damages cells and DNA . So
00:52 the Catalans goes around and breaks apart hydrogen peroxide so
00:56 it can't damage the yeast . And actually our bodies
00:58 have cattle lease to protect ourselves in DNA . And
01:02 the cool thing is the catalyst doesn't get used up
01:04 at all in the process . So it keeps going
01:06 around , breaking apart the hydrogen peroxide quickly releasing oxygen
01:10 gas and water . And normally this oxygen gas would
01:13 just get released out into the air . But for
01:15 fun we can trap it in soap bubbles . This
01:18 is the hydrogen peroxide you can buy at the drugstore
01:20 , it's not very strong , it's only 3% ,
01:23 but this one is 30% . I'm deluding this down
01:27 with water to 12% , mixing one millim of dish
01:30 soap and some food coloring . I'm also taking a
01:34 gram of yeast and activating it with four million liters
01:37 of warm water . Mm So what do you think
01:40 will happen if we mix all these together ? Uh
01:46 huh . Mhm . So pretty cool . But can
01:53 we get even more foam ? Can we make it
01:55 faster ? Let's tweak each of the ingredients one at
01:59 a time and figure out how they affect the reaction
02:01 . Should we change the amount of hydrogen peroxide ,
02:03 the amount of soap or the amount of yeast ?
02:06 Mhm . Mhm .
