00:09 | you and I , we've been engineering for a while
00:12 | now at this point you all deserve your own hard
00:14 | hats because you guys are pros that treehouse we designed
00:17 | . I've been spending a ton of time in there
00:19 | , I've got beanbags , bookshelf stacks of snacks .
00:22 | It is paradise . Thanks for helping me build it
00:25 | . And remember if you had another idea for a
00:27 | space to hang out and send it my way ,
00:28 | I totally want to see what you came up with
00:30 | . But this time we've got bigger projects to think
00:32 | about keyword here , how big as big as your
00:36 | hometown because this time we don't want to just design
00:39 | an invention or a building . We want to design
00:43 | an entire city . It's a massive challenge that only
00:46 | the very best and brightest can take on . And
00:48 | I'm enlisting you . How can we use engineering to
00:51 | design a city that is safe , healthy , sustainable
00:54 | and fun to live in this kind of engineering called
01:01 | urban planning requires a lot of complicated interlocking variables .
01:05 | It's a huge project . So where do we start
01:09 | ? Say it with me , the engineering process ,
01:11 | Let's define our problem . We need a place to
01:14 | put people , we need that space to fulfill their
01:16 | needs , things like food , water , shelter ,
01:19 | and also just places to have fun and we need
01:21 | a space to respect the natural environment where it exists
01:25 | . Sounds simple enough , but when you're planning a
01:27 | city , there are lots of things to think about
01:30 | . How will people move around the city ? Where
01:32 | will they go to have each of their different needs
01:34 | met ? So next we have to consider solutions .
01:38 | Since the city is such a massive project , there
01:40 | are a ridiculously large number of problems in an even
01:44 | ridiculously larger number of solutions . So I want you
01:48 | to build and test your own prototype for a city
01:52 | . Think through the trials , you might run in
01:56 | the variables you need to test and then start designing
02:00 | . Where do you start first ? Think about the
02:02 | things that you like about where you live . Maybe
02:04 | your city has a park that you really like ,
02:06 | or there's a public pool with a super cool slide
02:09 | . Then think about some things in your city that
02:11 | you don't like . Do you wish you could walk
02:13 | or bike to get to school instead of riding a
02:15 | bus ? This is a great way to start thinking
02:17 | about planning the job of a city planners to create
02:20 | places for people to live . That makes them happy
02:23 | . Now , let's get to specifics as city planners
02:25 | , we want to plan our city somewhere , decide
02:28 | where yours will be on a mountain , near a
02:31 | river by the beach . How does its location affect
02:33 | its resources ? For instance , if your city is
02:35 | in a desert , you'll need to pump in water
02:37 | from somewhere else , a city planner needs to plan
02:39 | for the future to consider what you do . If
02:41 | lots of people move to your city , will you
02:43 | build lots of small buildings for them , each on
02:45 | its own plot of land , cutting into the nature
02:47 | around you or would you build buildings higher or even
02:50 | go underground ? Next think about how you divide up
02:52 | your city . Cities have neighborhoods so people can get
02:55 | what they need without having to go too far .
02:58 | Once you've divided your city , decide where you'll put
03:00 | things like grocery stores , schools , airports , train
03:03 | stations , doctor's offices , post offices and parks and
03:06 | then think about how people will get there . Will
03:08 | they take a bus ? If so ? You'll need
03:10 | lots of roads . Will they take a subway ?
03:12 | Better put it in the plan ? Maybe they can
03:14 | bike then put in some bike paths to , and
03:17 | hey , don't forget sidewalks . Now take a look
03:24 | at the city you've created . Will your residents be
03:26 | happy and healthy ? Will they be able to shop
03:28 | for groceries male their mail and go to work in
03:30 | this space ? Is your city good for the environment
03:33 | to by respecting the surrounding nature . Cities are really
03:36 | complicated feats of engineering . There's so much to consider
03:39 | , but I trust you to do a great job
03:41 | . You've had a ton of training and you've rocked
03:42 | it so far . So do me a favor .
03:44 | Please send us a picture of the city you've created
03:47 | and let us know how you use the engineering process
03:49 | to create it . Building a hang lighter to get
03:51 | across the gorge . So that's one thing a flying
03:53 | robot . Pretty awesome . A treehouse better still but
03:56 | a city with this project , you'll have really earned
03:59 | your hard hat for sure . |
