00:0-1 let me ask you a question , what's almost worse
00:03 than not speak up in a classroom at all ?
00:07 The answer is with your hand up to say ,
00:10 I don't get it , how I'm dr phoenix panda
00:13 performance coach at door to math last 17 years ,
00:16 I've coached hundreds of kids , turning their math tears
00:20 into math smiles . So today I want to share
00:24 with you a simple , simple , simple three step
00:27 process how to put together a really clear and effective
00:31 question . So your child can speak up in class
00:34 with confidence and get the help they need when they
00:37 get stuck in class . All right , before we
00:40 get there , you probably already know this . There's
00:43 three types of questions , the helpful ones , so
00:47 not helpful ones . And then when that's not even
00:50 a question . All right , let's maybe start by
00:54 , take a look why it's so important for a
00:56 child to be able to ask a clear and effective
01:00 question in class . All right . Reason number one
01:04 , when your child with a hand to say ,
01:07 I don't get it . Well , that's not a
01:09 question . Um , it's one of the most frustrating
01:15 phrases for a teacher to hear because teachers , they
01:19 want to help your child , but they don't know
01:21 how right , because the child didn't really specifically see
01:24 where they got stuck on . Right . This frustrated
01:27 teacher may not behave correctly and transport that frustration to
01:33 a child . Now , frustrated , the child will
01:36 have really frustrated homework time , uh , take longer
01:41 and uh , I will ask the question can save
01:45 so much time of frustration for your child on their
01:48 homework . Right ? Um , reason number three ,
01:51 you probably already know this homework is not where you
01:55 find new topics . New material to figure out is
01:59 actually the time to do repetition for the stuff you
02:03 already learned in the classroom . Also think about it
02:07 . If they don't learn how to ask effective questions
02:10 , this pattern will stay with them . For every
02:13 class they take , and for every teacher they have
02:16 well beyond grade school and middle school and high school
02:20 , maybe even into college . Right ? So it's
02:22 a big problem . Now , let me give you
02:24 that three steps simple process to fix this . Step
02:29 number one , starting by telling your teacher when you
02:32 do get slumber number two , very specific . When
02:36 you got stuck on step number three , ask specifically
02:40 what you like you teacher to address . Let me
02:43 give you an example . Let's see . Your child
02:45 is 1/9 grader taking algebra . It's a common ninth
02:49 grader classes taking right ? They're solving let's say equations
02:55 . It's a 10 step process , right ? So
02:57 instead of your child raising your hand and say I
03:00 don't get it , you can see it is this
03:04 miss Thompson , I see you're trying to find the
03:06 value for the variable . From step number 4-5 .
03:12 You moved all the variable to one side . What
03:14 I don't get is on step # six or 7
03:17 . Where did that minus sign go ? Could you
03:21 help me with that or say can you address that
03:24 ? Can you show me one more time now ?
03:27 You can see it's a really simple process to fix
03:30 a pretty big problem . Right ? All right .
03:33 Um Let's see what else I want to tell you
03:35 . If you try to keep on practicing this will
03:38 take a little practice to get used to , but
03:40 if they keep on practicing this I promise you it's
03:43 going to save them tons of frustration and really exhausting
03:49 long homework time . Right ? So they all have
03:52 a happier time doing their math homework and you will
03:54 have happier and more confident kid . That's it for
03:59 today . So come back for more tips and wisdom
04:02 from our daughter math community . Hit that like and
04:06 share buttons for us until next time . Happy parenting
