00:00 | in this video , we are going to learn about
00:03 | something wonderful and fascinating called leap year . That's right
00:08 | leap year and as it so happens the year we're
00:13 | making this video is a leap here . Okay ,
00:16 | so needless to say we're pretty excited wait a second
00:23 | . We haven't even explained what leap here is .
00:26 | What does that mean ? What does that mean ?
00:28 | Leap year ? Well a leap year is a special
00:34 | year that has an extra day . That's right .
00:37 | Leap year is a special year . That has a
00:41 | bonus day . That day , commonly called leap day
00:47 | is added to the end of february . Huh ?
00:52 | Now , normally February has 28 days . However ,
00:58 | on leap year , February gets an extra day Leap
01:02 | Day , which is February 29 . So leap year
01:10 | gives us an extra day called Leap Day , which
01:14 | is February 29 . But why , I mean it's
01:20 | kind of cool . You know , some years have
01:22 | an extra day , but why why can't all years
01:25 | just have the same number of days ? Well ,
01:31 | we have to learn more about our calendar to discover
01:34 | that there are lots of different calendars used all over
01:38 | the world . But the calendar that is most commonly
01:41 | used is called the Gregorian calendar . Can you say
01:45 | that with us ? The Gregorian calendar ? Uh huh
01:50 | . Gregorian calendar . The Gregorian calendar is probably the
01:54 | calendar that is used in your classroom or in your
01:57 | home right now . The Gregorian calendar has 12 months
02:04 | , 52 weeks and typically has 365 days notice we
02:10 | said typically because there are leap years in leap years
02:15 | are years that have an extra day , but usually
02:18 | 365 days . It's interesting with the Gregorian calendar ,
02:27 | the length of a year is based on how long
02:30 | it takes the Earth to completely orbit the sun .
02:33 | It takes 365 days and six hours for the earth
02:39 | to orbit the sun . And that's the problem .
02:41 | It doesn't take exactly 365 days . Those extra six
02:47 | hours each year , add up . Six hours is
02:53 | 1/4 of a day . That means if you have
02:57 | an extra six hours for four years , you actually
03:00 | have an extra day . Yeah . To fix this
03:06 | problem , we just add an extra day to february
03:09 | called leap day to equal everything out . Mm This
03:15 | happens every four years . With a few exceptions ,
03:18 | every 400 years the next year . That is an
03:22 | exception will be the year 20 100 . It will
03:25 | be 1/4 year but will not have a leap day
03:29 | . What if someone from that year in the future
03:32 | is watching this video right now ? Mhm , Wow
03:37 | , that would be so cool , wouldn't it ?
03:39 | Or if you are watching this as a kid and
03:43 | in 2100 when everyone is looking forward to leap year
03:47 | , you'll say , Hey Leap Day isn't happening this
03:49 | year . I saw a hope school pop video about
03:53 | it a long time ago . Mhm . All right
03:58 | . Our final fact has to do with babies .
04:02 | Oh babies , Babies are born on Leap Day ,
04:11 | February 29 , just like any other day . That's
04:15 | right . Mhm And here's the thing . They have
04:19 | to decide when they get older . Are they going
04:21 | to celebrate their birthday on February 28 or March 1st
04:27 | because their actual birthday only comes along every four years
04:32 | . So they have to decide on regular years .
04:35 | Are they going to celebrate it in February on the
04:38 | 28th or in March the first , wow , we
04:44 | learned a lot , pretty much every four years is
04:46 | a leap year . We need to add a day
04:48 | because of the Earth's orbit around the sun and the
04:52 | day we add is called leap day . Oh and
04:58 | leap days added to which month do you remember ?
05:02 | Yes , february , february , February 29 is Leap
05:12 | Day and it is a special feature of the Gregorian
05:16 | calendar and it only happens on leap year . Are
05:24 | you watching this on leap ? Here is this leap
05:28 | day . If this is leap day , think about
05:30 | what you want to do on this special day ,
05:32 | it only happens every four years . And if you're
05:38 | watching this in the year 2100 , sorry , there
05:42 | is no leap day this year , even though it's
05:45 | 1/4 year . That's just one of those weird exceptions
05:49 | . You know , while you're watching this house ,
05:51 | the future , what's it like this Youtube still around
