00:0-1 | we are going to learn about a massive star in
00:03 | the center of our solar system . What is it
00:06 | called ? Yeah , the Sun actually , the Son
00:10 | is the only star in our solar system . But
00:13 | still it is huge . It is bright and without
00:16 | it life on earth wouldn't exist . So it is
00:19 | super important . But let's start here . The first
00:24 | fact about the sun we want to learn is that
00:26 | the sun is just a regular star . That's right
00:29 | . It's just a regular star . There are hundreds
00:33 | of billions of stars in our galaxy called the Milky
00:37 | Way galaxy . But the sun is special to us
00:40 | , right ? Because it is in the center of
00:42 | our solar system . But the sun really is a
00:45 | regular star . Like other stars , the sun uses
00:50 | hydrogen to burn bright hydrogen is the sun's fuel just
00:55 | like food is our fuel , and gasoline is the
00:58 | fuel used by cars . The Son uses hydrogen as
01:02 | fuel . If you're wondering what hydrogen is , hydrogen
01:07 | is a gas found all over our universe , and
01:11 | it's hard to see because it doesn't have any color
01:13 | to it , but it's all over the place .
01:15 | In fact , hydrogen is the most common element in
01:19 | our universe . So stars use a gas called hydrogen
01:23 | as fuel . The larger the star , the faster
01:27 | it burns through hydrogen , thankfully the sun has at
01:30 | least a five billion year supply of hydrogen left ,
01:34 | so the sun will keep burning for a long time
01:39 | . Here's an interesting question . How far is Earth
01:42 | from the sun ? How far is our planet from
01:47 | this huge star in the center of our solar system
01:52 | ? Well , it's pretty far away , it's pretty
01:54 | far away . The sun is about 93 million miles
01:58 | away from Earth . That's right , about 93 million
02:03 | miles away from our planet earth . And it's a
02:07 | good thing . It's a great thing that the sun
02:09 | is about 93 million miles away because if we were
02:13 | any closer to the sun , it would be way
02:15 | too hot to sustain life . And if we were
02:18 | further away we would all freeze , it would be
02:21 | way too cold . So the sun is the perfect
02:24 | distance away from the earth . Of course , having
02:28 | a huge star 93 million miles away helps us to
02:32 | see things right . It is helpful to have a
02:34 | massive burning light in the middle of our solar system
02:38 | that runs on hydrogen . I mean , can you
02:40 | imagine living in a world without light , it would
02:45 | be like this , This is what our world would
02:48 | be like without sunlight , it would just be dark
02:51 | . You know , we wouldn't be able to see
02:52 | anything , We'd be like bumping into each other and
02:54 | to be crazy , would be like , oh wow
02:57 | , is that a mountain or is that a chicken
02:59 | or what's going on ? Where am I what's going
03:04 | on ? The sunlight allows our eyes to see what's
03:08 | going on around us . But the sun provides more
03:13 | than just sunlight . The sun provides energy . One
03:17 | powerful way the sun provides energy is through a process
03:20 | called photosynthesis , wow , that's a big word .
03:23 | Can you say that with us ? Photosynthesis ? Yeah
03:28 | , photosynthesis , photosynthesis is how plants make plant food
03:33 | and produce oxygen without sunlight , Plants cannot make plant
03:39 | food or release oxygen . You know plants are not
03:44 | alone in using sunlight for energy . We use sunlight
03:48 | for energy as well . The energy we get from
03:51 | sunlight is called solar energy . Just like plants capture
04:01 | sunlight in the process of photosynthesis . People capture sunlight
04:05 | using these things called solar panels . Isn't that cool
04:10 | ? Mhm . Yeah , here are two men installing
04:13 | solar panels . The sun is powerful . It is
04:16 | awesome to see how we can use some of its
04:19 | energy to get power and electricity . Mhm . It
04:24 | has been so much fun learning about the sun with
04:27 | you . We learned that the sun is the only
04:32 | star in our solar system . Do you remember where
04:36 | in our solar system the sun is ? Uh huh
04:40 | . Right in the middle . Yeah , Like other
04:44 | stars , it uses hydrogen as fuel thankfully it has
04:48 | a lot of hydrogen so it will keep burning and
04:52 | burning for a long time . We learned that the
04:54 | sun is about 93 million miles away , which is
04:58 | actually the perfect distance . If the sun was further
05:01 | away it would be too cold . If it was
05:03 | closer , this planet would be way too hot .
05:09 | We also learned that the sun not only provides light
05:13 | , it brings energy plants use energy from the sun
05:17 | in a process called photosynthesis . And people get energy
05:21 | from the sun using things like solar panels . Energy
05:25 | from the sun is called solar energy . The Sun
05:31 | a regular star , but it is special to us
05:36 | . It's our Star . Mhm Special thanks to our
