00:0-1 Hi , I'm Taylor Behnke and welcome to crash chris
00:02 linguistics . Languages everywhere . It's what we used to
00:04 order a pizza talk on our phones , tell jokes
00:07 and make sense of the world around us . We've
00:09 used language to learn about every other subject on crash
00:11 course and now it's time to learn linguistics . Hell
00:14 language itself works over the next 16 episodes . We'll
00:17 look at the structure of language from the smallest building
00:20 blocks of sounds and hand shapes To the structure of
00:23 words and meanings to how words go together to make
00:25 sentences and conversations along the way . We'll also look
00:28 at the relationship between language and our identity , the
00:31 brain and even computers . We'll learn about writing language
00:35 acquisition and the diversity of human languages . There are
00:38 actually over 7000 identified languages in the world today that
00:42 includes thousands of spoken languages and hundreds of sign languages
00:46 . They can be found in small communities or span
00:48 across multiple countries . It can be written or unwritten
00:52 and they can be learned through family , formal schooling
00:54 or broader social networks . Each one is a living
00:57 experiment into how humans communicate throughout this series will be
01:01 sharing examples from widely known languages as well as some
01:04 you may not have encountered before , but we won't
01:06 be learning one language in particular . Instead , we'll
01:09 be looking at similarities and differences across many languages .
01:12 Learning how to think like a linguist about the languages
01:14 we encounter in our everyday lives . Were excited to
01:17 produce a series on linguistics because it's super relevant to
01:20 lots of fields including speech recognition and natural language processing
01:24 , speech pathology , lexicography and communications . It's also
01:28 useful if you're teaching or learning languages , not to
01:31 mention for journalists , poets , translators , interpreters and
01:35 other people who work with language . And if that
01:37 sounds like basically everyone , it kind of is more
01:40 generally understanding linguistics helps us understand how our own minds
01:44 and bodies work and the hidden patterns in our interactions
01:47 with other humans . It's also really fun regardless of
01:50 what part of language were analyzing or which language or
01:53 languages are . Our focus . A linguist is interested
01:56 in language as it's actually used , linguistics is not
02:00 about trying to establish and enforce one variety of language
02:03 is better than another . After all , if we
02:05 were studying rabbits , we wouldn't go around telling some
02:07 rabbits that they're hopping style is better than others .
02:11 But this increased understanding of language does come with an
02:14 ethical responsibility to be kind and compassionate with it .
02:17 Before we get into it all , let me introduce
02:19 myself . My name is Taylor Behnke and I'm a
02:22 writer , video maker and digital organizer . I studied
02:25 linguistics in college alongside writing in spanish ever since .
02:29 I've been fascinated by how language works and how it
02:32 shapes our identities . I think a lot about the
02:34 power of language as a tool for communication , both
02:37 in my work with digital communities and on my Youtube
02:40 channel . It's radish time . I'm excited to keep
02:43 learning about linguistics with you see you in the first
02:45 episode .
