00:0-1 | Geography is maps and rivers and mountains , but it's
00:02 | more than that . Geography is cities and cultures and
00:05 | people , but it's more than that to geography is
00:08 | finding patterns and connections between places and seemingly unrelated processes
00:12 | , digging deeper into the stories behind facts and asking
00:15 | why is this happening here ? Hi , I'm al
00:18 | is a career and welcome to crash course Geography .
00:21 | I'm so excited to embark with you on this journey
00:23 | around the world to explore the ins and outs of
00:25 | everything above and below the surface of the earth .
00:27 | Over the next year . To me , geography is
00:30 | about understanding the dynamic relationship between us humans and the
00:33 | incredible place we get to call our home . It's
00:35 | an inquisitive , close up look at how we shape
00:37 | the land and in turn how the land shapes us
00:40 | , like where and how we choose to produce our
00:42 | food , move our goods and build our economies and
00:45 | what happens when natural or human caused forces change or
00:47 | disrupt entire ecosystems . My own research has taken me
00:50 | to the far corners of the earth to explore ,
00:52 | study and document these types of issues in the Middle
00:55 | East . I spent time looking at electronic waste disposal
00:58 | and the impact it has on water , livestock and
01:00 | human health . As a National Geographic Explorer , I
01:03 | traveled to Madagascar to study how farmers are adapting their
01:06 | agricultural practices to cope with severe erosion and to Bangladesh
01:10 | to study how people are adapting to sea level rise
01:12 | by building floating gardens . As a documentary filmmaker ,
01:15 | I trekked through the Himalayas to learn firsthand how communities
01:18 | live with the consequences of glacial melt and through the
01:20 | muddy backwaters of the Mississippi River to understand the fate
01:23 | of the most prolific invasive fish species in the United
01:25 | States and one of the most amazing things I've learned
01:28 | while traveling across such distant and diverse locations is how
01:31 | remarkably connected we are to each other and our planet
01:35 | . I've seen how our individual and collective actions affect
01:37 | the systems and landscapes around us . Whether it's a
01:40 | swift change at a local level or a slow moving
01:42 | shift over an entire hemisphere , Geography teaches us about
01:45 | the profound interconnectedness of the world . Traditionally , geography
01:49 | is split into two tightly intertwined parts , so we'll
01:52 | begin our time together studying physical geography or the processes
01:55 | and phenomena of the physical world both above and below
01:58 | the earth's surface . We'll ask lots of questions like
02:00 | why is the sea floor so young when the earth
02:03 | is so old ? Or try to identify why winds
02:05 | and ocean currents are so important to life on earth
02:08 | , or explain why the Aral sea in Central Asia
02:10 | has been called , quote , one of the worst
02:12 | environmental disasters in modern history . Halfway through , we'll
02:15 | turn our focus to human geography and explore the ways
02:18 | people occupy the Earth's surface , like how we've moved
02:21 | , settled and use the land resources and space .
02:23 | So we'll look at how languages migrate and change ,
02:26 | like how the Bantu language spread throughout Africa or how
02:28 | humans interact with their environment . Like how for centuries
02:31 | people have relied on the seasonal monsoon rains in India
02:33 | to bring life giving moisture to their crops . But
02:36 | there's not a clear line dividing the physical and the
02:38 | human , which is where geography gets its strength because
02:41 | really geography is telling the story of the earth .
02:44 | Even something as commonplace as a banana has a complicated
02:47 | backstory that twists across continents and climates and turns between
02:50 | vast trade networks and political coups . We'll get to
02:53 | all that and more and in the end , well
02:55 | , we'll probably still have more questions . I hope
02:57 | you'll join me on this journey as we unravel the
02:59 | tail in Crash course Geography , Crash course Geography is
