00:0-1 | Hi there . I'm Clint smith and I'm the host
00:02 | of crash course black american history . I'm a writer
00:05 | , a teacher and a doctor . No , not
00:08 | the kind who can help you if you have some
00:09 | sort of serious medical issue more like the kind who
00:12 | spent way too many years holed up in the basement
00:14 | of the library , reading books on race , inequality
00:17 | , education and history before getting the letters PhD behind
00:21 | my name . So while I can't perform open heart
00:23 | surgery , I can tell you a lot about how
00:26 | slavery shaped the course of american history in the ways
00:28 | it's been taught in our schools . This series will
00:31 | move from the moment enslaved black people First arrived on
00:34 | the shores of the American British colonies in 1619 ,
00:37 | all the way through the Black Lives Matter movement that
00:39 | has pushed this country to more fully reckon with all
00:41 | that it is done to black people and to more
00:44 | fully acknowledge all that black americans have contributed to its
00:47 | history . We should probably begin by addressing the name
00:50 | of the course itself . Black american history . Over
00:53 | the course of american history , the language used to
00:55 | describe black people has changed and evolved over time and
00:59 | will no doubt continue to change and evolve . Moving
01:01 | forward across the United States today , the term black
01:05 | and african americans are often used interchangeably and there's a
01:09 | good chance that we'll use them interchangeably here as well
01:12 | . Typically african american is meant to refer to people
01:15 | of African descent who were born in , who are
01:17 | living in the United States . In the US there
01:20 | , black people whose ancestors were enslaved many generations ago
01:24 | and who are unable to trace their lineage to a
01:27 | specific place of origin . And there are black people
01:30 | who immigrated to the United States just a few years
01:33 | ago from countries all over the world . While people's
01:36 | histories and experiences may be different , each of these
01:39 | groups of people and everyone in between , it's black
01:43 | and that plurality of experiences is both a remarkable and
01:47 | just a beautiful thing as we'll discover , there's a
01:50 | great deal of fluidity with regard to how these terms
01:53 | are used and who they apply to and delving into
01:56 | this will really help us understand how race is a
02:00 | social construct , but also one that has very real
02:02 | cultural sociological and political implications . Part of why this
02:07 | show is so important to me personally is that when
02:10 | I was younger , I felt like I didn't have
02:12 | the language or the tool kit with which to fully
02:15 | understand and make sense of what this country had done
02:17 | to black people over the course of centuries . I
02:19 | didn't know that 12 of the 1st 18 presidents owned
02:22 | enslaved people . I didn't have the language to understand
02:26 | how redlining and government sponsored housing segregation shaped the landscape
02:30 | of contemporary America . I didn't know that new deal
02:33 | legislation and the G . I . Bill after World
02:35 | War Two purposely left out millions of black people from
02:39 | accessing its benefits , basically trapping them in intergenerational poverty
02:43 | . While millions of white americans received those benefits ,
02:46 | giving them a leg up into purchasing homes , attending
02:49 | and graduating college and moving comfortably into the middle class
02:52 | . The sorts of things that have long term intergenerational
02:55 | implications . I didn't know these things Because No one
02:59 | told me , No one taught us this in school
03:02 | and when I did learn it many years later ,
03:05 | it was so important . It was so free because
03:08 | it helped me better understand why our country looks the
03:11 | way that it does today . It helped me understand
03:13 | that the disparities black people experience in this country are
03:17 | not because there's anything wrong with black people , but
03:19 | because of everything that has been done to black people
03:22 | over the course of generations now should be said that
03:25 | sometimes when people think about black history , they think
03:28 | only of slavery and oppression . And while slavery is
03:32 | deeply , deeply important , trust me , I wrote
03:35 | a whole book about it to understanding how black americans
03:38 | first arrived here on mass , how the United States
03:40 | developed its early economy and why so much inequality persist
03:44 | between black and white americans across the board . It
03:47 | would also be a mistake to conflict the story of
03:50 | black life in this country singularly with the issue of
03:54 | slavery , which is to say naming the centrality of
03:57 | slavery to the american project can be done without falling
04:01 | into the trap of suggesting that black history begins and
04:05 | ends with slavery . Black history is more than slavery
04:10 | . It is more than jim crow apartheid . It
04:12 | is more than oppression . And while we will obviously
04:15 | be addressing these issues directly , because they are central
04:18 | to understanding how this country came to be , what
04:20 | it is . We will also be talking about black
04:23 | art , black literature , black cultural traditions and all
04:26 | that black people have created an accomplished in spite of
04:30 | centuries of both interpersonal and structural violence . Black american
04:33 | history is as much about the joys and celebrations and
04:37 | traditions of black life , as much as it is
04:39 | about being able to name and identify the ways that
04:42 | this country has long subjugated black people . They are
04:46 | not and have never been mutually exclusive . In fact
04:50 | , they go hand in hand . That being said
04:52 | , we want to note that this series will address
04:55 | topics that can be challenging to discuss , but we
04:58 | believe it is important to cover them thoroughly so that
05:00 | we can fully grapple with the reality of us history
05:03 | . When watching this course , you will encounter some
05:06 | information that may be sensitive and disturbing , but we'll
05:09 | also try to let you know when they are extreme
05:11 | cases . Over the course of this show , we
05:13 | will do our very best to capture the various dimensions
05:16 | of the black experience . But because we only have
05:18 | 50 episodes to tell these stories , there will inevitably
05:22 | be some things that are left out . This show
05:25 | is not at all meant to be a definitive history
05:27 | of black american life . It is meant to be
05:30 | just one contribution to a much wider conversation that has
05:33 | been happening among scholars , writers , activists , and
05:36 | citizens for generations . There's going to be a lot
05:38 | to learn over the course of the show and a
05:41 | lot to unlearn . But what we hope you come
05:43 | to understand is that black history is not peripheral to
05:48 | american history . It is central to it . Black
05:51 | history is american history . So let's go . Crash
05:57 | course is made with the help of all these nice
