00:13 Yeah , we're here again , session number four Elena
00:28 with Keep indiana Learning powered by Central indiana Educational Service
00:31 Center . We are showcasing all of the great things
00:34 that keep indiana learning in indiana online is doing as
00:38 as canvas customers here today on our kind of digital
00:41 learning showcase day , we're super excited to welcome joe
00:45 and Michelle to talk about something that I don't think
00:48 we talk about enough , which is SCL so I'm
00:51 going to Atlanta take it away and I can't wait
00:53 to see what they have in store for us .
00:54 As always subscribe like if you see something that you
00:58 love or if you hear something that you just absolutely
01:01 have to share , hit the hit the hearts ,
01:03 right , Hit the likes and then make sure you
01:06 share that with your administrators , teachers , parents ,
01:08 students , whoever needs to see it because we want
01:11 to make sure this great content from Keep indiana Learning
01:13 just spreads across the entire world so that they can
01:16 have some great resources to provide inside the elements that
01:20 we love . And I am super excited because again
01:22 , we don't talk about SCL enough and this is
01:24 going to be great for strategies , especially during this
01:27 time , but even beyond the pandemic , right ?
01:30 So super excited to take it away , think study
01:33 , we're really excited for keeping Deanna learning to be
01:35 on this stage with canvas and live streaming across all
01:39 their channels . One of the neatest programs that I
01:41 think keep Indiana Learning has built over the last year
01:45 is the digital learning coaches , Kadre and joe and
01:48 Michelle are both coaches for that program . It's 18
01:52 coaches that go across indiana . In fact , Michelle's
01:55 up in ship , she wanna , she says about
01:56 10 houses down from michigan joe's up in in Yorktown
02:00 , we're really excited to have them . And what's
02:02 neat is before they joined this digital learning , Kadre
02:06 of coaches , they didn't know each other and now
02:09 they're collaborating and really creating content . We're connecting the
02:12 network so that transforming teaching and learning in indiana and
02:15 beyond is really coming from the ground up , coming
02:18 from those who are in the classroom doing the work
02:20 and really making that change . So I'm excited to
02:23 welcome joe and Michelle to share what they're doing with
02:27 social emotional learning in canvas . Thank you As as
02:34 an overview . Um we're gonna be talking about social
02:37 emotional learning and we know how important it is to
02:40 make time and space in our , in our regular
02:43 day , whether we're virtual or in person to meet
02:46 those emotional needs of our students . And let's not
02:50 forget that it's applicable to us as the adults .
02:53 We need that time as well . And as Diana
02:56 said in the previous session , there's great results that
02:59 we get . Yeah , yeah . Oh no ,
03:13 we lost , I think we lost Michelle on the
03:17 livestream . For those of you that don't know .
03:19 And Lana can attest as well . Uh , we
03:22 here in Indiana are having what they would like to
03:24 call an internet blackout . It's been a little bit
03:29 of an issue today in our emotions . She's back
03:33 , Michelle . You know , that you've been gone
03:37 . I've been talking away . It was like ,
03:40 you were just gone . You're back now , though
03:42 , which we're very happy about . Well , I
03:44 have no idea when I cut out . How about
03:47 we do this ? Why don't you start over ?
03:49 We'll click right and you'll be good to go .
03:52 Very good . I was just talking about SCL and
03:54 the importance of it uh , to save time .
03:57 I know I just said all this to myself evidently
03:59 . Um , we do need to be intentional about
04:02 what we do , uh , to create these times
04:05 where the students can reflect on their emotions , where
04:09 the students can create a sense of calm . And
04:13 I think it's important to understand that these activities are
04:16 good for us as the adults as well . It
04:18 isn't just for the students . And so what we're
04:22 going to do today is joe and I are going
04:25 to tag team and I'm gonna talk a little bit
04:28 about some of these social emotional topics that are so
04:32 important for us to talk about at all grade levels
04:35 . And then joe with all of her magical knowledge
04:39 is going to show us some strategies where we can
04:41 implement these in the canvas platform . So let's just
04:46 start with talking about checking in with our students .
04:49 We know that it's so important , but in the
04:53 classroom it's so easy for things to get crazy and
04:57 we don't necessarily get to every single student . And
05:00 so Jam board gives us some options where we can
05:05 be sure that each student has had the opportunity to
05:09 check in and we get a feeling for where they
05:11 are . So joe is going to show us a
05:13 couple of things with GM board and canvas . Thanks
05:18 to show . So I don't know if you're using
05:21 jam board or not in Kansas , but I think
05:23 they make a great pair together and jam board has
05:26 definitely become one of my new favorite . It has
05:29 so many applications . It can be collaborative , it
05:32 can be used for group work . Um , it
05:34 can be used individually as assignments in canvas . And
05:38 that's the first thing that I want to show you
05:39 here . I'm simply using a google assignment and I
05:44 have attached to a jam board and so that's what
05:48 you'll see here , where it says SCL relic coast
05:51 should be roller coaster there , sorry for the typo
05:54 . Um and what happens here is that um ,
05:58 students would click on that and they would come here
06:03 , look , I don't want to share yet .
06:04 They would come to this jam board , which is
06:06 a roller coaster check in . And so this is
06:10 an individual assignments . So this might be something that
06:13 teachers want to do when they want to get a
06:15 feel for how students are , but they don't want
06:17 to share that with the rest of the class .
06:19 And really what students would do here is they would
06:22 maybe just get a text box and they would pull
06:26 a text box out here and they would put their
06:28 name and they would put that wherever they are in
06:31 the roller coaster . And for me , I'm like
06:33 , oh gosh , little malfunction there , I might
06:37 be in the loop . And so when I finished
06:40 my check in , I simply hit share . And
06:44 what's great is that's going to share this back to
06:46 the course in Kansas and then as a teacher I'm
06:52 going to see this and this would be my list
06:54 of students that have completed assignments and I can go
06:58 through and look at each student . I think this
07:00 is a great feature , google assignment with a free
07:03 LTI in canvas . Um If you haven't checked that
07:07 out , it's definitely worth your time to do so
07:10 . Now the other option in Jam Board is to
07:12 just use it as an external U . R .
07:15 L . And the purpose of this would be for
07:19 a collaborative assignment . So if I link this in
07:23 Kansas then everybody is going to be on the same
07:26 page . I've , I've got this set up so
07:29 that anyone can edit because that's how the sheriff studies
07:32 have to be put up . And students would simply
07:34 write their name on one of these text boxes ,
07:37 drag it to the appropriate place . I know a
07:40 lot of them are going to put that in the
07:41 sleepy category it seems . Um and then this is
07:46 this is live . So students and teachers alike would
07:50 be seen this at the same time . Um which
07:53 is scary for some teachers . Um I know for
07:56 those students that might possibly do something , you know
07:59 , a little naughty there . But it's great now
08:02 that um Jan board has come up with a version
08:04 history . So a lot of people were hesitant to
08:07 use it in the beginning because you could not see
08:10 who had put what on the jam board , they've
08:12 alleviated some of those issues . And so now you
08:16 can go and see at least who wrote what comment
08:18 . So I think these are two great tools that
08:21 we can integrate with canvas um and used as definitely
08:26 a cl check ins . Uh huh . Sorry about
08:37 I haven't got all day and now it starts ,
08:43 let's get Michelle a minute . Let's give her a
08:47 coughing is one of those things that everybody even gets
08:50 weirded out when they see it , when they you
08:52 know , don't be coughing my direction . I know
08:55 right ? So perspectives is another thing . Now my
08:59 voice is go jude . Why don't you talk to
09:02 him about perspectives ? Okay so perspective is something another
09:07 topic that we thought was really important to cover because
09:11 this is where we want students to learn from and
09:14 communicate their own perspective as well as develop an understanding
09:18 that someone can and likely will have different perspectives .
09:23 It's an important opportunity for students to gain empathy and
09:26 understanding . And we can ask for multiple perspectives .
09:32 Um , so make it a social norm in your
09:34 classroom to regularly read and explore others perspectives using classroom
09:38 discussions and other means . Um and it's a great
09:42 time to work with students to present the other side
09:45 of an issue and to restate others points before responding
09:50 . So we chose on perspectives to actually do a
09:56 canvass new quizzes . If you are not familiar now
10:00 , everybody has Kansas , new quizzes and Eddie ,
10:03 we might put you on the spot here and say
10:05 when in the world is new quiz is going to
10:08 deprecate the old quiz generator . Um but if you
10:12 don't know if I can tell , you can tell
10:14 , it seems to be a taboo topic right now
10:17 , that's okay . But yes , a secret .
10:21 The new quizzes has an option to add a stimulus
10:25 and I think this is really a great feature because
10:27 that stimulus could be a video . It could be
10:30 an image , it could be a passage of text
10:34 or it could be a website link and that's just
10:37 a few of the examples . So here's an example
10:40 where we have attached a website and when students ,
10:43 I'm in student view right now . So I'm in
10:45 preview when students would get to this quiz question ,
10:49 they would see this link to the real story of
10:52 the three little pigs and then they would read that
10:55 passage . And then you can see that along with
10:58 that stimulus , we have four questions attached to that
11:03 stimulus . So they get four opportunities to give a
11:06 different perspective of this news story of the three little
11:09 pigs . And then we also added an image .
11:14 And I think this is really interesting for perspective .
11:17 So we've found this image of a little boy and
11:19 his dog who knows what they were doing right and
11:23 right before this picture . But this would give students
11:26 of a lot of different ages , um , a
11:29 chance to go in and say , what , what
11:31 do you think this child is feeling right now ?
11:34 And then ? A second perspective might be ? What
11:37 do you think the boy's family is going to say
11:39 when he gets home looking like this ? So this
11:42 is just a couple examples of how you can use
11:44 the stimulus for SCL . Honestly . Um , it's
11:49 endless . The possibilities are endless here . You can
11:51 add all types of videos , anything that you think
11:55 students could respond to . And I think this would
11:57 be a great way , um , to show Empathy
12:02 and two sorry , perspectives . Um , using the
12:05 canvas quiz with the stimulus . Well , thank you
12:09 , joe . Thanks for covering for me in that
12:11 little coughing fit for me . And empathy is our
12:14 next topic . My Bernie Brown fans out there .
12:17 Uh , you know , a lot about empathy if
12:19 there are one of her followers , and we do
12:22 want our students to get a sense of what empathy
12:25 is . And it is the ability to sense other
12:28 people's emotions . That ability to imagine what somebody else
12:32 is thinking or what they are feeling . And one
12:36 of the things we want to do is to to
12:39 explain to the kids , help them understand . The
12:41 empathy and sympathy are not the same thing . We
12:44 treat them differently and uh , the words we use
12:48 are different and we do want to create that classroom
12:51 environment where students reflect
