00:01 this lesson is part one of fractions and it's bad
00:04 . Equivalent fractions equivalent fractions and two fractions that although
00:08 they use different numbers actually represent the same thing .
00:11 And I'll show you what I mean by this .
00:14 Well we're going to look at first the fraction a
00:16 half which looks like this , it's like getting a
00:18 pine cutting it into two pieces . Well what about
00:23 what we do with the pies ? We cut into
00:24 four pieces . Has shown just here , how many
00:27 pieces do you need to eat ? Half of this
00:30 pie ? Probably worked . It adds to it looks
00:33 like this And what you'll probably notice is that a
00:36 half , 1/2 is exactly the same as saying to
00:39 over four . So what you can see is one
00:42 half and 2/4 of the same thing , same amount
00:45 , different numbers . And what about maybe we cut
00:47 this .8 pieces . Okay , how many bits we
00:51 need to actually eat to have half ? Uh huh
00:54 . Four so one half , 2/4 , 4 rates
00:59 , they're all exactly the same things . So you
01:02 can see this pattern really well using the pictures which
01:04 show that you're dealing with each time exactly the same
01:07 amount . It's just different numbers . So how do
01:10 you convert between equivalent fractions without going through the ordeal
01:13 of drawing them up every time ? Well , so
01:16 we're trying to get one half , we're trying to
01:17 change it through a number of four . Well we
01:20 look at the bottom numbers here . What you'll notice
01:23 is to get from 2-4 . What you have to
01:26 do is you have to multiply by two so you
01:28 do the same to the top No . one times
01:30 two is two . So you want to get from
01:33 one half to a number over eight without drawing it
01:36 . Well you look at a half the bottom number
01:38 two to get to the bottom number eight , two
01:41 times 4 is eight , so one times 4 is
01:45 four . The similar thing happens if you want to
01:48 convert , say from 2-4 to a number over to
01:51 you . It's called simplifying . Well you can look
01:53 at four To get to two . You actually have
01:57 to divide by two . So The Top # two
01:59 divided by two is 1 . And as you'll see
02:03 a similar thing with the four is divided by four
02:05 . What you do the top you do at the
02:07 bottom . So here's a couple of examples . 1st
02:10 1 , we'll look at 3/5 you want to get
02:12 it to become a number 15 . So five to
02:16 get to 15 , you have to multiply by three
02:18 what you do the type , you do the bottom
02:20 . So we also have to multiply the top number
02:21 by 33 times three is nine . Pretty easy .
02:26 Another example You say something like 4/7 . We wanted
02:30 to get to be a number over 35 . So
02:32 we look at the bottom numbers to get from 7
02:35 to 35 . We have to multiply by five .
02:38 So we also have to multiply by five at the
02:40 top where he did the top to the bottom and
02:42 four times five is 20 . So 4/7 is the
02:45 same as 20/35 . Pretty easy . Once again ,
02:49 all you're doing is you're dealing with asylum mounts and
02:52 different numbers anyway . That's all for now . Bye
00:0-1 .
