03:23 look quickly at today's lesson boards . I'll show you
03:27 what we're going to talk about today today . Uh
03:31 , you can take a screenshot real quick . This
03:33 is today's Lesson content today . How to make a
03:38 steady plan . We're going to start with smart goals
03:41 . What is a smart goal and how do you
03:44 choose that ? one second we're going to look at
03:47 what to study . Many of you ask me like
03:49 , I don't know what to study , what should
03:51 I do . So this is how you can away
03:54 that you can figure out what to study finally how
03:59 often to study . So let's get started . And
04:03 also if you have not , please make sure hit
04:05 the like button , it helps it helps other people
04:09 find the lesson . Okay , let me move my
04:12 pdf out of the way and we'll get started with
04:15 smart goals . If you have been watching my videos
04:20 for a couple of years , you are probably familiar
04:24 . You probably know this topic , but it's very
04:26 important to cover . I think about this for my
04:29 goal setting a lot . It's good to , it's
04:32 good to refresh the mind . So smart goals .
04:37 This is the first step for making your study plan
04:40 . Why ? Because we need a target . We
04:43 need something to achieve a problem . And I see
04:47 many of you write this to me in comments .
04:50 You send it to me in messages , sometimes many
04:54 of you uh many many people . Right , uh
04:58 just I want to become fluent in english . How
05:02 do I do that ? Okay , that's a great
05:05 long term goal to have . But we need to
05:09 think smaller . Like think about the steps you're going
05:13 to take to reach that goal . So that's what
05:16 a smart goal is for helping you to set what
05:21 big and small goals to achieve the bigger goal .
05:26 Okay , so let's look at this . So this
05:29 smart , this is called , this is an acronym
05:33 , so S . M A . R . T
05:35 . Each one of these refers to a different word
05:38 . So the first part of a smart goal is
05:42 its specific , your goal is specific for example ,
05:47 I want to be fluent . That's not a specific
05:50 goal . You need to choose something very clear .
05:54 Okay second , your goal is measurable , measurable .
06:00 You can measure your goal . So that means ,
06:05 how many vocabulary words did you study or how long
06:09 was your conversation ? How many minutes or how many
06:13 sentences did you write or how many presentations did you
06:17 give ? For example , Can you measure your goal
06:22 ? Okay third , Achievable . Achievable , so able
06:28 to achieve ? Yeah , is it possible in other
06:32 words ? So for example if you say , Okay
06:34 , I'm going to learn 500 vocabulary words by next
06:38 week . Probably not . Like you can study a
06:43 lot . Yeah , but you are probably not going
06:47 to remember all those words . Your goal should be
06:50 achievable , realistic , realistic . So is your goal
06:56 realistic for you and your life and your needs now
07:00 ? So is it something that's possible for your schedule
07:04 that's important to think about if you have a busy
07:07 schedule ? Is it realistic to study for three hours
07:10 a day ? Maybe not ? So make your goal
07:14 realistic Finally , time based , time based , what
07:20 does time based mean ? That means you have a
07:22 time period or a deadline for your goal ? So
07:26 maybe it's a one week goal or a one month
07:29 goal or a one year goal ? Maybe all of
07:32 those . So your goal should be time based .
07:36 So again , specific measurable achievable , realistic and time
07:43 base , this is a smart goal . So your
07:45 goal should be all of these things . So let's
07:49 look , let's look at this very common message you
07:51 send me . I want to become fluent in english
07:55 . Okay . Is it specific ? Well , sort
07:58 of english is the one thing you want to do
08:01 , Is it measurable , fluent is not measurable ?
08:05 Right ? It's like a feeling . Yeah . And
08:07 we learn new words all the time . I still
08:10 learn new words in english . Like it's always continuing
08:14 . Is it achievable ? Well yes , but when
08:18 we don't know , is it realistic in the future
08:22 ? Depending on you ? Maybe is it time based
08:26 ? No , I want to become fluent is not
08:28 a time based goal . So this is not a
08:30 helpful goal . I want to become fluent is not
08:33 a helpful goal . Of course we want we want
08:36 that , we want in our minds . Yes .
08:38 Let's look at some examples of goals that are good
08:43 uh smart goals . So for example , if you
08:47 know you need to study vocabulary , You can say
08:51 my goal is to learn 300 new vocabulary words by
08:57 the end of March , Learn 300 new vocabulary words
09:02 by the end of March . This is a smart
09:05 goal . It's specific 300 words . It's measurable .
09:09 I can count how many words I learnt , right
09:12 . It's achievable . So it's possible to study this
09:17 many words in this period . It's realistic . So
09:21 I can make a schedule for myself . It's a
09:24 good pace and it's time based . So my deadline
09:28 is the end of March . Okay , so you
09:31 can send in the chat what your smart goal is
09:35 . Yeah , let's maybe you can give some ideas
09:38 to the other people watching . Now . There are
09:39 lots of people watching . That's super cool . So
09:42 you can send your goal in the chat and maybe
09:45 you can give us some other people some ideas .
09:47 Yeah , okay , here's another one . If your
09:50 goal is speaking , you can say my goal is
09:53 to be able to speak about my work and hobbies
09:59 for three minutes by the end of july . My
10:04 goal is to be able to speak about my work
10:07 and hobbies for three minutes by the end of july
10:10 . So again , this is specific . So my
10:13 work and my hobbies is the topic . It's measurable
10:16 three minutes right here . I choose this time .
10:20 You can make five minutes , maybe 10 . I
10:21 don't know . That's a long time to talk about
10:23 yourself . It's achievable . So that means it's possible
10:28 to do this in this case it's realistic . So
10:33 this goal is not a crazy goal and it's time
10:37 based . So my deadline is the end of july
10:41 . Okay , mm Lupe says , tell us some
10:45 of your smart goals . Do my smart goal .
10:48 I have an exercise smart goal . That's true .
10:50 So I wanted to , let's see . My goal
10:54 was to uh , improve my some of my personal
10:59 best times for this year . So I wanted to
11:02 improve my times by , I think the day is
11:05 february 17 . I forget , I forget exactly the
11:09 day it's on my calendar . So I have personal
11:12 uh , exercise times , like running times I want
11:16 to improve by next month . So that's my ,
11:19 that's an example of my smart goal . Okay ,
11:24 uh , let's see . I'm looking for your examples
11:29 . Evelyn on Facebook says , so learn 500 more
11:32 words by the end of March . Great . Great
11:35 . Great . Okay , nice examples . Um ,
11:39 brian says , what is the difference between achievable and
11:42 realistic ? Good question . These are , there can
11:45 be some overlap , some parts that are similar .
11:48 So achievable means it's possible to do something . Like
11:52 if you say Like I'm going to learn 500 new
11:55 vocabulary words by next week . It's like , that's
11:58 really probably not achievable and it's also not realistic ,
12:02 but this comes into play , which means this is
12:05 like , this is important when uh , your schedule
12:09 is super busy . That's what I think about with
12:12 realistic , like maybe the goal is achievable for someone
12:16 with a lot of time . Like if you say
12:19 I want to learn 100 vocabulary words by next week
12:23 , maybe for some people that's achievable . But is
12:27 it realistic ? Like can you spend , I don't
12:29 know , 10-15 minutes every single day or 30 minutes
12:33 every day really studying . So for me , realistic
12:37 is about your personal schedule a little . Is it
12:40 realistic for your time ? The time you have ?
12:44 Okay . Um All right , let's continue to the
12:47 last goal . One more for writing . If you
12:50 are looking for a writing goal , write a short
12:53 essay by the end of next month , write a
12:56 short essay by the end of next month . So
12:59 you're choosing something specific always . So not these big
13:04 vague goals . Okay . Uh , so elders is
13:08 my smart goal is to learn the Arabic language .
13:11 So again , in your goal , so that's a
13:14 big goal . Make it more specific . So how
13:17 are you going to measure your goal ? Is it
13:19 learning the alphabet of the language ? Like what's the
13:22 deadline for your goal ? So again , it's really
13:25 hard to start . If your goal is huge ,
13:29 you need to give yourself a step . What's the
13:32 next step for your goal ? Yeah . Okay .
13:35 All right . Um , let's take a break a
13:40 lot . Okay , so let's take a short break
13:42 and then we'll talk about how to decide what to
13:45 study . Yeah . Okay . So if you missed
13:47 it , today's topic is but how to make your
13:51 own 2021 study schedule . We just talked about setting
13:55 goals . Now we're going to talk about deciding what
13:59 to study . So basically how to check your own
14:03 level . This is for those of you that maybe
14:06 don't have a teacher or are studying alone . Okay
14:10 . All right , so if you haven't also please
14:13 make sure to hit the like button please like and
14:15 share this video so others can find today's lesson .
14:19 Okay ? Uh I forgot as well if you missed
14:22 it earlier . Below the link . Below the video
14:25 has free pdf for you to download . You can
14:29 Check them out , you can print these and put
14:32 them on your refrigerator , you can uh put them
14:35 on your desk , you can put them on your
14:37 phone or your computer . Uh to practice vocabulary and
14:41 expressions . Here's a good one . This is the
14:43 talking on line one that has some good uh conversational
14:48 phrases on the background . So check this out .
14:51 Uh If you're working on your vocabulary especially there are
14:54 some new ones . Also I don't have printed there
14:57 are new conversation practice worksheets to , so I don't
15:02 have it printed to check the link . Uh and
15:04 you can find , So that's from yeah , below
15:08 the video or above the video . Check one of
15:10 those . Okay , Part two . Let's go to
15:13 part two . What to study ? How do you
15:16 decide what to study ? Okay , so basically in
15:21 other words , how do I know my level ?
15:23 So don't think about for this step , don't think
15:27 about my level , my level , beginner , beginner
15:30 , beginner , intermediate , whatever . Again , let's
15:33 think about it in a slightly different way . What
15:38 to study , What do I study ? How do
15:41 I know ? So ask yourself some questions . Can
15:46 I Something , something something and give yourself three answers
15:52 . Yes , a little and it's hard or no
15:57 , for example , can I introduce myself ? Can
16:02 I introduce myself in english or the language you're studying
16:06 ? Okay . Can I talk about my hobbies ?
16:10 Yes , a little . No . Can I write
16:14 an email ? Can I order food on the phone
16:19 ? So These are just four examples . There are
16:23 so many can I questions you can ask yourself about
16:27 your daily life and your work and your school ,
16:31 your professional life . There are so many questions from
16:37 like very basic topics , very basic things to do
16:41 to advance things to do . So ask yourself these
16:45 if you're like , I don't know what kinds of
16:47 questions to ask myself . Here's a tip , google
16:51 , google can do lists in english . I can
16:56 do list is a list of questions like these .
17:00 So you can check the list and say yes or
17:03 a little or no . So ask yourself these questions
17:09 or google a list of questions . Okay then look
17:13 at your answers if your answer is yes . Great
17:17 For example , can I introduce myself ? Yes ,
17:20 I can . Great . Okay , spend your time
17:24 studying something new . This is one problem many learners
17:28 fall into , they study the same thing over and
17:31 over and over and over again . Hello , My
17:34 name is like hi , it's nice to meet you
17:36 . They practice the same things over and over .
17:40 You have to move to the next step . So
17:44 if your answer is yes , can I talk about
17:47 my hobbies ? Yes . Okay , great . Move
17:49 on . Move to the next thing . Okay ,
17:52 so this one a little . It's hard if your
17:57 answer is this good , that means it's your next
18:01 step . The next thing to look at . For
18:03 example , can I write an email ? You might
18:06 think a little . I think I can but it's
18:10 difficult . It's kind of hard for me . So
18:13 why is it hard ? Is it vocabulary ? Is
18:18 it grammar ? Is it listening ? Is it writing
18:21 ? So what's the thing that's difficult for you ?
18:25 This is a question you know , for yourself you
18:28 might think , oh everything . So if you think
18:31 everything , try just choose one to start with ,
18:34 for example , can I write an email ? Oh
18:38 , a little it's kind of hard why ? Maybe
18:41 its vocabulary , maybe it's grammar , maybe you don't
18:46 know the format , like how to write an email
18:50 , the different parts , you can google all of
18:53 these things and we have lessons of course on our
18:56 website too . So look for this answer for your
19:01 questions to yourself . It's okay sort of but it's
19:05 a little hard for me . You want to study
19:08 the things that are challenging for you , You have
19:11 to challenge yourself with new things to move forward .
19:16 You can't make progress if you study the same things
19:20 again and again and again . Okay finally , if
19:24 your answer to the question is no , can I
19:27 order food on the phone or can I give a
19:31 business presentation if you say no , that's okay ,
19:34 just keep it for the future . So don't worry
19:37 about that like right now you can think in the
19:40 future , that's a goal for me . But right
19:44 now , No , so this is something like for
19:48 example a business presentation , maybe you think I can't
19:53 do it at all ? No , it's not possible
19:56 . That's okay . Just keep it in your mind
19:58 for the future and work on the next step for
20:03 you . So I know this is a process like
20:07 and you have to do this again and again ,
20:10 like maybe once a month or once every three months
20:13 , you have to always check your level but it's
20:17 so helpful to understand the next thing you need to
20:21 do . So again , if you don't know like
20:24 how to make these questions for yourself , try this
20:28 . So just use google to find can do lists
20:33 or like english language can do list and try to
20:37 answer those questions for yourself and you can find maybe
20:42 the topics or the parts that are challenging for you
20:46 . Okay cool . Okay so again another tip down
20:52 here , a tip down here is when you decide
20:57 your next step like you decide I need to study
21:01 vocabulary or grammar or listening , you can use google
21:06 to look for resources . So like a vocabulary list
21:10 resources just google like like email vocabulary or email english
21:15 vocabulary or like uh I don't know um like boating
21:19 vocabulary whatever so use google to find the things you
21:25 need , you don't have to find like the perfect
21:29 textbook . Right ? Use google , you can find
21:32 so much there for free . So you can go
21:36 you can google for short essays to read and news
21:42 . Uh like you can find uh news in english
21:46 for learners for learners again , google like english news
21:50 for learners , something like that . You can also
21:54 google audio to listen to . Like podcasts or radio
21:58 shows . There's so much to find out there .
22:01 So when you find the challenging point for yourself use
22:05 your google skills to find resources you need . And
22:08 of course we have many lessons . You can check
22:11 our our lessons and our courses . Uh We have
22:15 lots of different topics and vocabulary lists so much to
22:19 study . Uh So there are many many resources that
22:22 you can choose from . Okay someone I've even I
22:27 think says how much time do you think is necessary
22:30 for a day ? I can't see the end of
22:32 your comment for a day to be fluent . Yeah
22:34 we're going to talk about how often to study in
22:37 part three today . Okay . Um All right people
22:41 were saying please make a list of this vocabulary .
22:44 Please make a list of that vocabulary , google it
22:47 google it or use your or use our website .
22:52 These lists already exist . Don't wait for me .
22:55 I'm going to take a long time . There are
22:57 many questions and many requests google it , google it
23:01 . Don't wait for me . Go , go for
23:03 it . Okay . All right , Let's take a
23:07 break . So that was part two . How to
23:11 decide what to study , how to find the part
23:15 . Oh actually , great question Miguel uh Sepulveda on
23:19 facebook says when do you start with your no list
23:21 items ? Great question this part . These things when
23:25 do you start with these things when they become these
23:30 ? So that means when you study and you like
23:34 for example you study your challenging thing . This thing
23:37 That's hard . That's a little bit difficult . You're
23:39 going to learn extra grammar and extra vocabulary , right
23:43 ? You're not going to use just old stuff .
23:46 Always you're going to pick up new things and gradually
23:51 you'll move forward someday . This No , I can't
23:55 do it at all becomes your It's a little hard
23:59 . So that's the answer . Okay , you that
24:04 was a lot . Okay , let's again take a
24:06 break . I said I was going to take a
24:08 break and then we'll go to the last part .
24:11 How often to study how often to study if you
24:14 missed it . I will quickly show you again .
24:17 I have a bunch , a ton . So many
24:21 pdf's here . Like I said , I don't have
24:24 some new ones printed out . The team made some
24:26 new ones about . They have Yeah , it's a
24:29 conversation . You can practice for talking on the phone
24:32 . I know that's a big , big one for
24:34 many people . If that's your goal , you can
24:36 check that pdf . There's another one about survival phrases
24:41 . So like just the minimum like the basic stuff
24:44 you need for everyday life in this city . So
24:48 check those out . Of course there are many other
24:51 topics you can choose from . Two . So take
24:54 a look . Uh I need to I need to
24:56 print some new ones . I think the team is
24:59 making more all the time . So check that out
25:02 and we'll go to part three . Um part three
25:06 . How often to study ? Everybody wants to know
25:08 how often to study . Uh Here we are .
25:11 Also if you have not please make sure to hit
25:14 the like button so other people can find this lesson
25:17 . Yeah that would be super cool . Okay let's
25:23 see case side . I hope I said your name
25:26 right on facebook said I can read an easy book
25:29 and google when I find words difficult . Yes that's
25:32 what I do when I read actually reading is my
25:36 favorite way to pick up vocabulary . So actually I'll
25:40 tell you one of my study strategy . So I
25:42 have been studying japanese for many years . I use
25:46 books . Books are my favorite way to study vocabulary
25:50 usually . So I when I read a book I
25:53 mark highlight in the book the word the first time
25:56 I read it like I don't know this word and
25:59 then I check it later . Like after I finished
26:02 reading I look up the word like review it and
26:07 then I read the page again later . So that's
26:09 one of my study strategies . Okay all right so
26:14 let's go to part three , part three . How
26:19 often how often do you study ? The short answer
26:22 is a little bit every day , a little bit
26:25 every day . So 10 minutes of vocabulary study for
26:29 example or one minute or 11 video lesson or maybe
26:34 you read one news article in English or you write
26:38 a page in a journal . The best thing you
26:41 can do is spend a little time every day a
26:46 tip studying a little bit a few times a week
26:51 or every day is better than studying for hours once
26:56 a week . There have been recent , there's research
26:58 and studies about learning about studying uh not just language
27:04 but learning in general learning other things . So it's
27:07 better to study regularly , Like maybe 3-5 times a
27:12 week is also great . So make a little time
27:16 every day . That's better than like going crazy .
27:20 Like studying three hours or five hours every saturday .
27:24 You give your brain time to remember every day and
27:29 refresh every day , that's better to do . So
27:32 make some time for yourself Every day . So in
27:36 my case like earlier today I said like I have
27:39 exercise goals for next month , so I spent 10
27:42 minutes every day like doing some physical activity to reach
27:48 my goal . So and I notice the small improvements
27:53 every day maybe like every week in my case ,
27:57 but those small everyday activities really add up over time
28:04 . Okay . Uh Yeah Mina says any strategies for
28:08 reading ? Yeah I shared one the one strategy I
28:11 have for reading , I use reading for vocabulary to
28:14 pick up vocabulary , but I also use reading um
28:18 to work on my grammar . So sometimes I notice
28:21 a grammar pattern or that's a little confusing to me
28:24 . So again I google it , I just I
28:27 google like the base grammar pattern and look at other
28:31 examples uh and yeah look at dictionaries , whatever online
28:36 to help me understand that grammar pattern . Okay um
28:43 Other questions . Okay I don't see it . So
28:46 a couple more ideas if it's hard for you to
28:50 start your studies . This is something I've been doing
28:54 Because it's hard to stay motivated this year this time
28:57 , right ? So set a timer for like in
29:01 my case , like five or 10 minutes , uh
29:04 and steady for that time period . So you say
29:07 , Okay , I'm going to read for 20 minutes
29:10 and you set a timer and do it for 20
29:12 minutes . That for me it's really , really helpful
29:16 because when you think about studying , you're like ,
29:19 I don't want to do it . It's not fun
29:22 . It takes so long . But when you realize
29:25 you're like , oh , it's only 10 minutes ,
29:28 then it's easy , at least for me . That's
29:30 really helpful for me . So I do this .
29:32 I set a timer for the period I'm going to
29:35 study . You can also build a habit in your
29:39 daily routine , build a habit . that means make
29:43 a new habit in your daily routine . For example
29:47 , when I go to work , I listen to
29:50 a lesson , so in the car or on the
29:52 train uh something when you're walking , maybe you can
29:57 listen to a lesson or in my case I studied
30:01 vocabulary on an app on my phone when I went
30:05 to work and when I came home from work ,
30:07 so 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in
30:10 the evening , that was 30 minutes every day for
30:13 me on my workdays , which was super super good
30:16 for my vocabulary studies a couple years ago , so
30:20 try to make a habit inside your daily routine .
30:25 That's a good one to do . All right .
30:28 Um Some people are asking about like the one on
30:31 one app , you can check that out . The
30:33 one on one app is free on the app store
30:36 uh and then you can add some other things on
30:39 later , so I'm not going to spend the livestream
30:43 . I'm already late talking about the app , so
30:45 you can check it out for free and see what
30:47 you think . Um Alicia , how long have you
30:50 been studying , Japanese ? Uh For 13 ? I
31:00 don't know , like uh sometimes I'm very active in
31:04 my studies and lately . Not so active , I
31:07 think . Yeah , it's been a long time .
31:10 Okay . Uh that is everything for today , Wow
31:15 , that was a lot . So I'll show you
31:17 today's lesson board so you can take a look if
31:19 you want to take a screenshot and use this for
31:22 your study plan , please feel free . But here's
31:25 what we talked about today . Smart goals , deciding
31:29 what to study and how often to study . Smart
31:33 goals . Great , great . We love our smart
31:36 goals . So we'll end there for today , Next
31:39 week I'll be back of course , next week .
31:42 Next lesson , Come on , next , next lesson
31:44 , next lesson . Oh my gosh , I've typed
31:47 january , I'm still in january mode , january .
31:50 No february . Can you believe it ? It's going
31:53 to be february next week . This time it just
31:57 goes by so fast . Okay , next week ,
32:00 february 3rd will be the next lesson , february 3rd
