00:0-1 Good day and welcome to Tech Mouth Channel . What
00:02 we're gonna be having a look at this video is
00:04 converting from fractions to decimals and then a little bit
00:07 more difficult . We're gonna have a look at converting
00:10 back from decimals to fractions . It does require a
00:12 little bit more work . Okay , we'll be looking
00:14 how to do that anyway , it's a really handy
00:17 little trick now . Um so first off we're gonna
00:19 be looking at converting from fractions to decimal . So
00:22 I'll give you an example here , say we go
00:25 , I'll give you a fraction here , we'll write
00:27 down the one will convert is 3/8 . Now look
00:30 , you may already know this as a decimal but
00:32 I'll show you how we can work this out .
00:34 So one way of thinking about fractions is that it
00:38 is the division between two numbers ? So example ,
00:41 here 3/8 is literally three divided by eight . Okay
00:47 , we could describe that as so we can actually
00:49 work this out as a decimal by going three divided
00:53 by eight . So let's do this . So we're
00:55 gonna work this out not using calculator , we're gonna
00:58 work this out using a standard division type some so
01:03 Let's do this . So eight and this is going
01:08 into three but because this is going to be a
01:10 decimal , I want to end up putting a bunch
01:13 of decimal places here that we can work with and
01:15 you'll see why these are really valuable as we go
01:18 along . So let's start this division out . So
01:21 I'll put the decimal place up here where it's gonna
01:23 go . So eight into three , we can't do
01:26 so zero there . And so what we do is
01:29 we carry this three Across . Okay , so eight
01:34 into 30 now , 18 to 30 ? Well That
01:38 goes three times because 3824 . Okay , so how
01:43 much is left over ? There is six left over
01:46 for 38 24 . So eight into 60 . Okay
01:51 so 7/8 of 56 seven Because 7 8 - 56
01:58 there is four left over . Okay so we left
02:02 with now we have 40 years at eight into 40
02:06 goes five times . Okay . And there's no remainder
02:10 . So we've got what we call a terminating decimal
02:12 answer here . It's finished , there's no remainder .
02:15 This decimal is now terminated and that is our answer
02:18 . Okay so 3/8 as a decimal is point 375
02:25 Okay , so I'll give you another example of this
02:29 . What about one where we we don't get a
02:32 terminating answer like that . I'll give you an example
02:34 of this would be so we had to say something
02:36 like uh two thirds , so two thirds again you
02:41 can think about this as being two divided by three
02:44 . So let's do this , get this through ,
02:48 we'll get the the three there and we're going to
02:53 put this into two decimal places here . 0000 Okay
02:58 . four . Very nice and handy there . And
03:01 The death toll place will line up so 3-2 we
03:04 can't do it . So I put a zero there
03:07 and I'm going to carry this to across Three into
03:10 20 because this is now 23 and 20 goes six
03:13 times six threes 18 and there's two left over .
03:18 Okay , now we've got two years so too is
03:20 being carried because two leftover , we've got 20 years
03:23 , so three into 20 goes six times Because six
03:27 years 18 , there's two left over going to carry
03:30 that too . We got 20 again , three into
03:33 20 , what do you think that will be basically
03:35 ? Again , that's six times carry the two during
03:38 the 26 times . So it's gonna be , it's
03:40 gonna , that's gonna keep going on forever and ever
03:42 and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever
03:44 . In fact we can write this as far as
03:46 we can actually write this equals 0.6 and we put
03:50 this little dot up here and what this little dot
03:52 up here means that we have a recurring decimal which
03:55 is just going to go on forever and ever and
03:57 ever . This will continue to be a six .
03:58 So this is what this little dot here means if
04:01 ever you see that by the way , so you
04:02 don't have to write 666666 and keep working out ,
04:06 You just put the 0.6 with this recurring . So
04:11 that's how we go about changing a fraction into a
04:14 decimal . So next up let's have a look about
04:17 how to convert decimals into fractions . So I'm gonna
04:21 put a link to that on our next video so
04:23 I'll see you then . Okay
