02:47 at let's Master English dot com . So are you
02:51 ready ? Let's go for it . Mm . A
02:58 South African chef is being booted out of New Zealand
03:02 because he's too fat . The 130 kg corpulent cook
03:06 has been told his health is at risk and can
03:10 therefore no longer be allowed a work Visa With nearly
03:14 30 of the Kiwis overweight . The last thing Christ
03:18 Church wants to deal with is overly fleshy foreigners .
03:24 So how was it ? Pretty easy . No ,
03:27 I know it's quite difficult . I read it fast
03:31 . There are some new words for you . So
03:34 this time why don't I read it a little bit
03:38 more slowly , That should be easier for you .
03:42 Let's try it . A South African chef is being
03:47 booted out of New Zealand because he's too fat .
03:52 The 130 kg corpulent cook has been told his health
03:57 is at risk and can therefore no longer be allowed
04:02 a work visa With nearly 30 of the Kiwis overweight
04:08 . The last thing christ church wants to deal with
04:12 is overly fleshy foreigners . Was that a bit easier
04:19 ? I hope so . But there are some words
04:21 that we need to discuss . So let's go back
04:24 to the first sentence . A South African chef .
04:28 Okay , so we know the country South Africa and
04:32 from that country there's a chef , C H E
04:35 F a chef is a cook . See okay now
04:41 my mom is a cook , even I am a
04:44 cook . Maybe you are a cook , but are
04:46 we chefs ? So we have to distinguish when we
04:51 talk about the profession chefs are professional cooks . Now
04:58 sometimes we call a person at a restaurant who cooks
05:01 meals a cook and not a chef . So when
05:05 we say chef were actually referring to somebody with very
05:11 specific training , they went to school to learn culinary
05:16 arts , that is the art of cooking . Now
05:21 , if you go to your high school cafeteria or
05:24 to Mcdonald's , we don't call those people chefs ,
05:28 we call them cooks . My mother , she's a
05:33 great cook . Sometimes she cooks like a chef ,
05:38 but I don't think she's had special training . Me
05:42 , I'm just a regular cook . So this person
05:45 is a chef that means he's a professional , a
05:48 south african chef is being booted out of new Zealand
05:54 because he's too fat . So booted out of new
05:59 Zealand , New Zealand . Once again the country booted
06:02 out . This is a phrase als verb to boot
06:06 out . It's the same as to kick out .
06:11 Now think about a boot . B . 00 T
06:14 . It's a type of footwear , like a cowboy
06:17 boot or an army boot or a work boot .
06:22 So boots are big and they're heavy booted out ,
06:27 kicked out . Oh it makes perfect sense . So
06:31 this is a new brazel verb for many of you
06:34 to boot somebody out . Have you ever been booted
06:38 out of someplace ? One time in high school I
06:42 was booted out of history class . Why ? Because
06:47 I was causing problems . Can you think of an
06:50 example when you were booted out ? So once again
06:54 this is terrible . A south african chef is being
06:58 booted out of new Zealand because he's too fat .
07:04 The 130 kg Corpulent Cook . Okay . 130 kg
07:10 . Yes , that's very big . Corpulent . C
07:15 . O . R . P . U . L
07:18 . A . N . T . Corpulent . One
07:21 more time . C . O . R P .
07:25 U L . A . N . T . Corpulent
07:29 . Corpulent means fat . It's a synonym for the
07:33 word fat . It means very big , very large
07:37 Roli poli tubby . The 130 kg Corpulent Cook .
07:45 So here we have an interesting speech pattern . We
07:50 have kilogram corpulent cook . We have coca cola .
07:56 This is called liberation . And in many news stories
08:02 the writers like to create a liberation because it sounds
08:07 interesting and it's actually easier to remember and to understand
08:13 The 130 kg Corpulent Cook has been told what was
08:19 he told . His health is at risk . Ah
08:24 Yes if you are overweight , if you are obese
08:30 then yes your health is at risk . You might
08:35 get a disease like diabetes , you might have heart
08:39 problems . So this is very serious being overweight .
08:44 So the 130 kg Corpulent Cook has been told his
08:49 health is at risk and can therefore no longer be
08:55 allowed a work visa . Okay so for several years
09:00 he has had a work visa and he's been a
09:04 chef in New Zealand . But this year when he
09:08 went to renew his visa , they said no we're
09:12 sorry you are too fat . Now actually , they
09:17 didn't tell him he was too fat . The word
09:20 fat is a rude word . I'm sure they said
09:24 you are overweight or perhaps they said you are obese
09:29 . So is that a good reason to not give
09:33 somebody a work visa ? Well , it might be
09:37 because if he's working in the country and he develops
09:42 a disease like diabetes , then he needs help and
09:47 he needs insurance and I believe in New Zealand the
09:52 government helps pay the medical bills . So that means
09:56 the government must pay for a foreigner's medical bills and
10:01 the government of New Zealand does not want to do
10:04 that . So let's look at the next sentence With
10:08 nearly 30 of the Kiwis overweight . So nearly 30
10:15 of the Kiwis are overweight . But I didn't say
10:20 are overweight . I started with with with nearly 30%
10:25 of the kiwis overweight . What is a kiwi K
10:30 I W I S plural capital K . It's a
10:34 big letter . K . Kiwis is a nickname for
10:39 New Zealanders . People from New Zealand are sometimes called
10:43 kiwis . Nearly 30 of the Kiwis are overweight .
10:50 Oh my goodness , this is a very bad situation
10:54 for the country With nearly 30 of the Kiwis overweight
10:59 . The last thing Christ Church wants to deal with
11:04 is overly fleshy foreigners . The last thing christ Church
11:10 wants to deal with christ Church . What is that
11:15 ? That's the capital of New Zealand . So when
11:19 we say Christchurch , we're referring to the capital ,
11:23 the government . If we're talking about the United States
11:27 we could say Washington or Washington , D . C
11:31 . If we're talking about Russia we could say Moscow
11:35 . So when we say Moscow does not want to
11:37 talk to Washington that refers to the government . And
11:42 in this case With nearly 30 of the Kiwis overweight
11:45 . The last thing Christchurch wants to deal with .
11:49 The last thing the new Zealand government wants to handle
11:53 wants to take care of is overly fleshy foreigners .
12:01 Once again we have a liberation overly flashy foreigners overly
12:09 O . V . E . R . L .
12:11 Y . Fleshy F L . E S . H
12:15 . Y . Foreigners . So we have a VFF
12:19 overly fleshy foreigners . So overly fleshy foreigners . No
12:24 problem people from another country overly fleshy means too much
12:30 flesh . Flesh is another word for skin . So
12:34 too much flesh . Too much skin means two fat
12:38 overweight . Obese Roli poli pudgy corpulent . It's the
12:45 same idea as fat fat foreigners . Do you understand
12:50 the situation ? So once again this is actually a
12:54 serious news story . This man and his wife have
12:59 been living in New Zealand for several years . And
13:03 what's really interesting When he first came to New Zealand
13:07 , he weighed 160 kg . So he's actually lost
13:13 weight and now the government is telling him you cannot
13:18 stay . What do you think Is that fair or
13:23 unfair ? I don't know , it is unhealthy .
13:29 However , he has been losing weight . In fact
13:33 he weighs less now than when he first came to
13:37 the country . So shouldn't the country take that into
13:41 consideration ? Mm Well the wife and husband are of
13:46 course arguing this to the new Zealand government . So
13:51 I don't know what will happen but I do hope
13:54 he gets the chance to stay . There must be
13:57 a reason He and his wife left South Africa to
14:00 move to New Zealand . It must be a very
14:03 good reason so good luck to him and especially I
14:07 hope that he is able to lose more weight .
14:11 This is the first time I've ever heard of somebody's
14:15 visa being turned down because of being overweight . So
14:22 if you're thinking about immigrating to another country you might
14:26 want to get yourself in good physical shape . Now
14:31 I'm going to read this story two more times .
14:34 The first time will be a little bit slow and
14:37 I hope that you understand it perfectly . The second
14:40 time is going to be really fast . Are you
14:45 ready ? A South African chef is being booted out
14:49 of New Zealand because he's too fat . The 130
14:54 kg Corpulent Cook has been told his health is at
14:59 risk And can therefore no longer be allowed a work
15:03 visa with nearly 30 of the Kiwis overweight . The
15:08 last thing Christchurch wants to deal with is overly fleshy
15:13 foreigners . A South African chef is being booted out
15:18 of new Zealand because he's too fat . The 130
15:21 kg corpulent cook has been told his health is at
15:25 risk and can therefore no longer be allowed a work
15:28 visa with nearly 30% of the kiwis overweight . The
15:32 last thing Christchurch wants to deal with is overly fleshy
15:36 foreigners . Mhm . Okay . It's time for our
15:46 Q and A . Section . And today we have
15:48 a question from Mikhail Mikhail from Moscow , he wants
15:53 to know everything there is to know about subways .
15:58 That's a terrible question . Mikhail , how am I
16:01 supposed to answer this question ? Well I decided I'll
16:05 talk about vocabulary now actually I've only been on one
16:10 subway in America and that was in san Francisco and
16:14 the san Francisco subway system is called Bart B A
16:20 R . T . And that stands for Bay Area
16:24 rapid transport transport or transportation I'm not sure anyway .
16:30 Bart now I do live in Seoul south Korea ,
16:34 well near Seoul and in Korea some of the subway
16:39 lines are called Smart Seoul metropolitan area rapid transport .
16:48 So each city will have a different name for its
16:51 subway system . London has a different name . New
16:55 york has a different name , Chicago has a different
16:57 name . So depending on the city you go to
17:01 some of the vocabulary might be a little bit different
17:04 . So make sure you do some good research of
17:07 course when you go to the subway station you need
17:11 to have a ticket in san Francisco . They have
17:14 the Bart card that's a card that looks like a
17:18 credit card but in the card you have money You
17:21 can charge the card by putting money into the card
17:26 $10 $20 . And every time you want to use
17:31 the subway and even the buses , you swipe your
17:36 card over the reader . So when you enter the
17:39 subway station there's a gate and the gate is usually
17:43 called a turnstile . And on top of the turnstile
17:48 there's an area where you set your card and you
17:52 just put it there for a second and take it
17:54 away . And the subway fee is automatically deducted from
17:59 your card . If you don't have enough money then
18:03 you need to go to a machine . It looks
18:05 like a vending machine and it will charge your card
18:10 just like charging the battery on your phone . So
18:13 you put your card in the machine and then you
18:16 add $10 or $20 . And your card is good
18:21 to go in every city . The name of the
18:25 card is different . I think in London it's called
18:29 an oyster card . Why An oyster ? I don't
18:33 know . Also in London when they talk about the
18:37 subway , they have two words underground and tube .
18:43 So the tube is actually the subway . In America
18:46 . We just say subway , we get on the
18:49 subway and we get off the subway . Sometimes we
18:53 need to transfer trains or transfer subways so we start
18:59 on one train and then we transfer to another train
19:03 . Transfer stations can be very confusing . In new
19:07 york city , several different trains will go to the
19:11 same station to the same track . So you really
19:15 have to pay attention to the front of the train
19:19 where they have the final destination printed in some cities
19:24 . The trains or subways are named by colors .
19:29 The blue line , the green line . The orange
19:32 line . In some cities there named by the final
19:36 destination , which can be a location and it can
19:40 be a street name . For example , in new
19:42 york city , the Lexington line . I highly recommend
19:46 that you go to the city's subway site online to
19:52 get the best information but it's not that complicated .
19:56 It's actually very easy and I hope I've answered some
20:00 of your questions . Mm Yeah . How you doing
20:10 everybody ? This is country Shane and I'm here to
20:12 bring you a fact . A strawberry is not an
20:17 actual berry but a banana is this has been country
20:22 shame bringing you the facts . Oh well I don't
20:36 know . Okay . It's time for today's english tip
20:47 and come on . This is a podcast and this
20:51 is all about listening . So one really important thing
20:57 if you want to master english is you have to
21:01 use english every day . Now I know sometimes it's
21:05 very difficult to speak english . Maybe there are no
21:10 foreigners around you . Maybe your family doesn't want to
21:14 speak english with you , Maybe you're all alone .
21:18 Well even if you're alone , I want you to
21:21 repeat after me . But minimally at a minimum you
21:26 have to listen every day . That's why I'm making
21:30 this podcast . This is one tool you can use
21:34 to listen to english now . You can sit at
21:38 your desk and listen . But the nice thing about
21:41 a podcast is you can wash dishes and listen ,
21:46 you can be driving and listen . You can be
21:49 exercising , you can be doing anything and listen even
21:53 at the office , turn the volume down low and
21:57 listen podcasts are a great tool to keep you in
22:04 practice now . Only by listening . You will never
22:09 master english , but by improving your listening skills ,
22:14 you will improve your confidence and it will have an
22:18 effect on your pronunciation . So once again the tip
22:24 of the day is to listen listen to english as
22:28 much as possible . It can be my podcast ,
22:32 it can be other podcasts , it can be pop
22:35 songs . If you're Justin Bieber fan , listen to
22:40 Bieber . If you're a Queen fan , listen to
22:43 Queen whatever the music is that you like , listen
22:46 to it in english , listen to the news CNN
22:51 is pretty difficult but things like NPR that's national public
22:56 radio , that's not too bad . There are many
22:59 talk shows and radio stations that you can find online
23:04 to . Of course it's going to be really difficult
23:08 to understand everything but once again use it as background
23:13 noise , create an environment of english around you .
23:19 If you're not exercising , if you don't clean your
23:22 room , if you're not a dishwasher , this is
23:25 an excellent excuse to start start exercising just walking ,
23:31 start cleaning your room , start doing the dishes and
23:34 while you do it it will be your personal time
23:38 to listen to english , listening to a podcast ,
23:41 listening to the news , listening to a radio station
23:44 . All of these are available online if you have
23:49 a smartphone that's the easiest way . But the nice
23:53 thing about podcast is you can download them directly to
23:58 your phone and this podcast will be yours forever .
24:03 Well I'm sure eventually you will delete it and that's
24:12 then podcast number one for let's Master english Once again
24:17 , my name is Coach Shane . I hope you
24:20 enjoyed the podcast . I'm very curious as to whether
24:24 you liked it . I would like your criticism ,
24:27 your compliments and I would also like to tell you
24:31 there will be a transcript everything I said , you
24:36 can read it and I will put this on my
24:39 website and my website is not ready yet . So
24:44 hopefully I don't know by podcast three or podcast for
24:49 the website will be up and running . And then
24:53 you can go back to podcast number one And find
24:56 the transcript there . So podcast three podcast for you
25:00 have to listen to that . And then I'll give
25:03 you the the website address and you can find the
25:07 transcripts . Thank you very much , everybody . I
25:10 hope you enjoy the podcast and uh that's it and
25:15 let's master english .
