00:00 Hi everyone , I'm jennifer from english with jennifer .
00:04 If you want to study english with me and boost
00:07 your communication skills , be sure to subscribe to my
00:11 channel . Some people have told me that I look
00:15 like Winona Ryder , I don't think I'm her doppelganger
00:19 , but I suppose there are some similarities . I
00:22 generally take the comparison as a compliment because I like
00:26 the actress , guess what I have in common with
00:29 Winona Ryder , UMA thurman , Yao , Ming and
00:34 Tiger Woods . We all belong to Generation X .
00:39 We our generation Xers That means we were born between
00:44 the years 1965 and 1980 . What generation do you
00:50 belong to do you know ? Let's talk about generations
00:55 and generational differences . Learn some important vocabulary related to
01:00 this topic . We can talk about generations in terms
01:12 of parents and Children . We use phrases like my
01:16 generation , my parents generation , my grandparents generation ,
01:22 the younger generation today . But the interesting thing is
01:29 that a wide age gap between siblings can mean that
01:32 brothers and sisters belong to different generations . I have
01:37 three brothers , my two older brothers and I were
01:40 born before 1980 are younger brother was born after 1980
01:47 . So technically he's a millennial . Millennials are connected
01:53 to the late 1980s and the early 1990s there called
01:57 millennials because they were becoming young adults at the start
02:01 of the new millennium . The exact years are in
02:05 1981-1996 . Millennials are also referred to as generation y
02:12 but that name is less common . My brothers and
02:17 I get along very well and we can talk about
02:20 almost anything . But it is true that my two
02:23 older brothers and I know more songs , movies and
02:27 TV shows from the 1970s that was part of our
02:31 early childhood . Our younger brother watched different cartoons and
02:35 listen to different music growing up , they say by
02:39 the way that the music we love the most is
02:42 the music we listen to as teenagers . Do you
02:45 agree with that ? I do . I love music
02:49 from different time periods including classical music . But the
02:53 music I love the most is music from the 1980s
02:57 . That's when I hit my teenage years . But
03:01 all of my brothers and I experienced something very important
03:05 . We all remember life without the internet . We
03:08 didn't really use computers and laptops until we were young
03:12 adults . Cell phones came even later . It's the
03:18 generation after the millennials that's known to be very tech
03:21 savvy . They grew up with more technology , they
03:24 know more about it and they're very comfortable using it
03:29 . People born in the late 1990s and the early
03:32 2000s are post millennials . Post means after post millennials
03:39 are also referred to as Generation Z . Post millennials
03:44 were born between 1997 and 2012 . I bet some
03:49 of you watching right now our post millennials right .
03:55 Another way we can divide people is according to their
03:58 experience with technology . My Children are digital natives .
04:03 They've grown up with digital technology . This kind of
04:08 technology is familiar and comfortable to them . They're the
04:12 ones who taught me how to use instagram . That's
04:17 because I'm a digital immigrant . I was already an
04:20 adult when I started to use digital technology as part
04:23 of my daily life . They say that digital natives
04:29 and digital immigrants think differently , Process information differently and
04:34 behave differently to some degree . I think that's true
04:40 . But I think many digital immigrants have adopted views
04:43 and habits of digital natives . For example , I
04:47 love when things are done fast . I hate to
04:49 waste time . It's in my nature . So I
04:52 love high speed internet access and I wish other aspects
04:57 of life could move just as quickly . Maybe there's
05:02 less comfort with technology among the baby boomers . These
05:06 are people who were born after the Second World War
05:10 . They were born between 1946 and 1964 . After
05:16 the war there was a baby boom in the U
05:18 . S . A big increase in the population .
05:22 People were having babies . That's where the name baby
05:25 boomer comes from . There is some debate over the
05:30 expression , okay boomer . It's being used quite often
05:35 on social media . Is it offensive or not ?
05:40 If it's being used to criticize someone for not understanding
05:44 or knowing something because they're too old then yes ,
05:48 it's likely offensive , but in my opinion it depends
05:53 on the relationship between the speaker and the listener .
05:57 It depends on the situation and the tone of voice
06:01 . My kids for example sometimes tease me about being
06:04 too old and it can be annoying at times but
06:08 it's also funny . So when they do this I
06:10 don't take great offense . Now we're getting into the
06:15 topic of ageism and you need to be careful how
06:19 you view people and how you treat people based on
06:22 their age . There are different forms of discrimination ,
06:27 right ? Racism ? Sexism . While ageism is when
06:32 you don't treat people fairly because of their age ,
06:35 you judge them for being old , What do you
06:41 think ? Is it fair for a company to hire
06:43 people only under the age of 40 ? When is
06:47 age an advantage because it gives you experience and when
06:51 his age a concern We're facing this question as we
06:57 get ready for the next us presidential election . The
07:01 US . president by law must be at least 35
07:04 years old but there's no age limit . Should there
07:08 be ? What do you think ? Okay let's try
07:13 a quick quiz . All name 10 famous people and
07:16 you tell me which generation they each belong to .
07:20 Ready . Barack Obama . Born in 1961 . Barack
07:30 Obama is a baby boomer . Donald trump . Born
07:41 in 1946 . He is a baby boomer but just
07:45 barely If Trump had been born one year earlier ,
07:50 he would have belonged to another generation . Some talk
07:54 about the silent generation when they refer to people born
07:58 between 1925 and 1945 . But there is some debate
08:03 and confusion over the name . It's honestly not a
08:06 name that I hear used as much as the other
08:09 names for different generations . Why the silent generation were
08:14 they silent and they didn't complain about things ? Was
08:19 it a silent time because they had less technology or
08:22 maybe it was silent in the sense that it was
08:24 a low period . This was the time of the
08:27 great depression in our country . Let's go on with
08:32 our quiz Leonardo Dicaprio 1974 . He belongs to Generation
08:42 X . Mark Zuckerberg . Born in 1984 . He
08:53 is a millennial Taylor swift . Born in 1989 .
09:03 She's also a millennial steven Spielberg . Born in 1946
09:14 . Spielberg is a baby boomer , jennifer Lawrence Born
09:23 in 1990 . She's a millennial Michael Jackson Born in
09:34 1958 . Jackson was a baby boomer . Bernie Sanders
09:45 Born in 1941 . He's a few years short of
09:48 being a baby boomer . Bernie Sanders belongs to the
09:51 silent generation . Millie bobby Brown . Born in 2004
10:03 of Millie Bobby Brown is a post millennial and if
10:06 you don't know her name , maybe you belong to
10:08 another generation or you just haven't watched the TV show
10:12 stranger things . All right , here's the list of
10:18 generations . Again . The silent generation is from 1925
10:23 to 1945 . Baby boomers were born between 1946 and
10:29 1964 . Generation X is from 1965 to 1980 .
10:38 Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996 . And post
10:45 millennials , they were born between 1997 and 2012 .
10:52 Feel free to post what generation you belong to in
10:55 the comments . I'd also be interested in hearing what
