00:00 Hi everyone . I'm jennifer from english with jennifer and
00:04 I'd like to meet the request of some viewers who
00:07 asked me to say the names of the 50 U
00:10 . S . States and capitals . But did you
00:12 know I already did this . Yes . Way back
00:15 when in 2000 and eight I went over all the
00:18 names in a four part video . I'll put the
00:22 links to that older lesson in the video description just
00:25 in case you'd like to take a trip down memory
00:27 lane . Youtube and my video making were quite different
00:31 then and by the way to those who subscribed early
00:35 and stuck with me all these years . Thank you
00:38 . And to newer viewers , please subscribe . There's
00:41 still so much more we can learn together . Mhm
00:46 . Yeah . When my Children were younger I gave
00:53 them placemats like this one To help them learn geography
00:57 . I remember when they're in fourth grade they had
00:59 to pass a test on the 50 states and capitals
01:02 and I helped them prepare , which was a good
01:04 review for me because most adults tend to forget a
01:07 bit of geography as the years passed . But actually
01:11 I think it's a little unfair If I'm not mistaken
01:14 . Canada has 10 provinces . Australia has six states
01:20 . American school Children have to learn 50 states how
01:24 to spell them , how to say them , their
01:26 capitals and their locations . It's a lot , don't
01:29 you think ? Yeah . Right . Mm . Yeah
01:48 . Yeah . Mm . Yeah . Yeah . Well
02:00 the point of going over all the names is for
02:03 you to hear my model and some possible variations .
02:07 But before we get to the states , let's talk
02:09 about regions . As I said , we adults tend
02:12 to forget some of the specifics , but we have
02:15 a general idea in our head . Sometimes we talk
02:21 about the north and the south were referring to the
02:24 Northeast and the Southeast are associations may be connected to
02:28 history , particularly pre civil war . The mason Dixon
02:33 line is a boundary between the states of pennsylvania and
02:36 Maryland . This line became a way americans separated slave
02:41 states from Free States . Slave states in the South
02:44 . Free States in the North . We can also
02:49 talk generally about the East , the West and the
02:51 Central States . The East coast is here along the
02:55 atlantic ocean , and the West coast is here along
02:58 the pacific . The east coast breaks up into three
03:01 regions New England , the mid atlantic and the Southeast
03:09 . Not everyone agrees on which states belong to which
03:12 regions . For example , texas . Some classify it
03:15 as part of the South . Others see texas as
03:18 part of the Southwest . Yes , just like we
03:21 broke up the East . We can also break up
03:23 the West . We talk about the midwest , the
03:26 Southwest and the West Coast , or pacific coast States
03:30 . We can also talk specifically about the pacific Northwest
03:38 . Not surprisingly , the oceans and the mountains help
03:42 determine the region's out in the west . We can
03:44 talk about the Mountain States or the Rocky Mountain States
03:49 . Do you know the short name for that mountain
03:51 range ? The Rockies . Yeah . Yeah . Yeah
04:11 . Yeah . Yeah mm . Yeah . Mhm .
04:26 Mhm . Okay . Yeah . Mhm . So the
04:45 next time you hear an american say where they're from
04:48 , you can clarify by asking questions like Arizona .
04:53 Is that in the southwest , is that a southwestern
04:55 state Kentucky ? Is that in the south or the
05:00 midwest ? Okay . While we're talking about regions ,
05:05 let's briefly mention time zones , How many time zones
05:08 are there in the U . S . 3456 six
05:15 On the mainland . The 48 states have four time
05:18 zones . Eastern Central Mountain and Pacific . Then there's
05:23 Alaska and there's Hawaii Hawaii doesn't observe daylight saving time
05:29 . So it gets confusing sometimes for us to make
05:31 the time conversions . Mhm Yeah . Yeah . Yeah
05:49 . Okay . Now that we've gone over all the
05:51 regions , let's go through the states and capitals .
05:54 I'll use the map and we'll go region by region
05:57 . I'll also list the state abbreviations . The two
06:01 letter postal code for example , massachusetts is M A
06:05 Maryland is MD . Did you know when I was
06:08 in school ? I also got quizzed on the postal
06:10 codes . At one point I had to memorize all
06:13 50 abbreviations . And did you know that each state
06:19 has at least one nickname ? Something that the state
06:22 is known for . We become familiar with these nicknames
06:26 because we see them on license plates of cars .
06:29 I've spent a lot of time in the east .
06:31 So I know the nicknames of most of these states
06:34 . I don't know the others as well . But
06:36 to be fair I'll include the nicknames of all the
06:39 states . Okay , here we go , Augusta maine
06:47 maine is the Pine tree state . It's also called
06:50 vacation land montpelier Vermont . The Green Mountain State Concord
07:01 New Hampshire , the granite state . Now I say
07:06 conquered some might also say concord . Let's not talk
07:11 about right or wrong . Let's just talk about the
07:13 variations you may hear . I say concord Concord New
07:17 Hampshire boston massachusetts . My state massachusetts is the Bay
07:26 State providence Rhode island . The Ocean State , Hartford
07:38 Connecticut , the Constitution state , Albany new york ,
07:48 the Empire state . Harrisburg pennsylvania . Did you know
07:57 that pennsylvania is the only state that uses the two
07:59 letter abbreviation in conversation . For example , my hometown
08:04 is Pittsburgh . P . A Pennsylvania is known as
08:08 the Keystone State because of its central position within the
08:12 original 13 colonies . Trenton , New Jersey the garden
08:20 state . Most americans will use a global stop when
08:24 they say that capital city . You could say Trenton
08:28 but most will say threaten Trenton . New Jersey Dover
08:36 Delaware the first state Annapolis Maryland . It's called the
08:48 Old line state . But personally I know it as
08:51 the crab state . They have wonderful steamed crabs in
08:55 Maryland , charleston west Virginia . The Mountain state .
09:06 Richmond Virginia . The old Dominion state . It was
09:11 one of the 13 colonies Frankfurt Kentucky . The Bluegrass
09:19 state Nashville Tennessee , the volunteer state . And I'm
09:27 not sure why it has that nickname . If you're
09:29 curious about any of the nicknames , google them .
09:33 It will be interesting reading in english Raleigh north Carolina
09:42 , the tar heel state , another nickname worth researching
09:49 , Columbia , south Carolina , the palmetto state .
09:54 I hear palmetto , palmetto , the palmetto state .
10:02 Atlanta Georgia , the peach state . You may hear
10:08 that second T . Dropped sometimes Atlanta Atlanta Georgia .
10:16 Tallahassee florida the Sunshine State . Now as someone from
10:23 the Northeast , I say florida florida with two syllables
10:27 . Some people say florida with three syllables and they're
10:32 also val variations florida florida florida . Let's not talk
10:38 about right or wrong . It's just about what you'll
10:41 hear personally . I say florida , Tallahassee florida ,
10:49 Montgomery Alabama , The yellow hammer state . That's a
10:54 bird . Jackson , Mississippi , the magnolia state .
11:04 Little rock Arkansas the Natural state . I say Arkansas
11:11 without an S . Some people say the S Arkansas's
11:15 I actually saw in a dictionary are Kansas as a
11:18 possible variation . I don't hear that much , but
11:22 apparently it exists . I say Arkansas , little rock
11:26 Arkansas baton rouge Louisiana . The pelican state . Notice
11:35 how I use a global stop baton like Trenton ,
11:39 New Jersey baton rouge Louisiana columbus Ohio the buckeye state
11:52 Lansing michigan the great lakes ST you know that we
11:57 have five great legs , right ? Lake michigan is
12:00 one of them . Yeah , okay . Yeah ,
12:19 yeah . Mm right Indianapolis indiana the Hoosier state .
12:35 Springfield Illinois . Land of Lincoln , as in president
12:40 abraham Lincoln . Some people may say Illinois boys ,
12:44 but I think that's far less common . I say
12:48 Springfield Illinois , Madison , Wisconsin . The badger state
12:56 , A badger is an animal . Saint paul Minnesota
13:04 , the North Star state des Moines Iowa , the
13:10 hawkeye state bismarck North Dakota , the Peace Garden State
13:20 . Pierre South Dakota . The Mount Rushmore state Lincoln
13:27 , Nebraska , the cornhusker state , Topeka Kansas the
13:35 sunflower state jefferson city Missouri the show me state denver
13:47 colorado . The centennial state . Cheyenne , Wyoming the
13:55 equality state I say Cheyenne . But I've also heard
14:00 Cheyenne Helena Montana . The treasure state Boise , Idaho
14:11 , the gym state . Salt Lake city Utah ,
14:17 the beehive state Carson city Nevada . The Silver State
14:26 . I say Nevada . I also hear Nevada sometimes
14:31 . So take your pick austin texas , the lone
14:37 star state Oklahoma city Oklahoma . The sooner state santa
14:48 fe new Mexico . The Land of Enchantment . Notice
14:54 how I dropped the tea and santa santa fe you
14:57 don't have to but it's very common just like we
15:01 dropped the tea often in Atlanta Atlanta Georgia and santa
15:06 fe new Mexico phoenix Arizona . The Grand Canyon State
15:16 . Olympia Washington . The evergreen state , Salem Oregon
15:25 . The beaver state . I think I usually say
15:29 Oregon but sometimes I may say Oregon . People may
15:33 think that one variation is right , another is wrong
15:36 , but be prepared to hear . Both . Go
15:39 to a tool like you ghoulish , listen to about
15:42 a dozen speakers and you'll start to hear a preference
15:46 Oregon is probably what most american english speakers say .
15:50 Salem Oregon , sacramento California a golden state . We
15:59 can drop the T . In sacramento . Sacramento can
16:03 become sacramento just like santa fe santa fe Atlanta Atlanta
16:10 sacramento , California Juneau Alaska , Our 49th state and
16:19 our largest state , Honolulu hawaii . The aloha state
16:27 Hawaii is our 50th state by the way . Do
16:33 you know that ? Half or more of our states
16:35 have native american names ? Massachusetts is one of them
16:40 interesting history in terms of pronunciation . Look for words
16:46 , dress patterns . This will help you develop a
16:49 better instinct for saying unfamiliar names . For example ,
16:53 all the states with new have stress on the syllable
16:58 that immediately follows new Hampshire , new york , new
17:04 jersey , new Mexico and the states with north and
17:11 south share the same stress pattern . North Dakota ,
17:17 south Dakota , north Carolina , south Carolina . Search
17:27 for other stress patterns based on syllable count . For
17:31 example , find the states with four syllables . Say
17:34 the names aloud . Do notice a pattern . Listen
17:40 , pennsylvania indiana , Mississippi Oklahoma Arizona California . And
17:58 hey , let's not forget the capital of the United
18:00 States Washington D . C . If you just say
18:04 Washington you may be asked Washington D . C .
18:07 Or Washington state Washington D . C . Our capital
18:12 is right there . It's between Virginia and Maryland .
18:18 What does D . C . Stand for ? District
18:22 of Columbia ? Remember Washington D . C . Isn't
18:26 part of any one state . It's a district all
18:29 by itself . I hope you found the lesson useful
18:34 . If you'd like to compare this presentation to the
18:36 lesson back in 2008 , then check out the links
18:40 in the video description . In that older lesson ,
18:43 you'll hear the pronunciation of other native speakers and I
18:46 also included the dates of statehood and the state flags
18:51 will end here . Don't forget to subscribe and like
