00:00 Hi everyone . I'm jennifer from english with jennifer ,
00:04 a common frustration students have is trying to find the
00:08 right words when you're having a conversation . But guess
00:12 what ? Sometimes sounding more natural is not about saying
00:16 certain words , but rather omitting them , omit means
00:21 to delete or leave something out . Have you ever
00:26 seen this punctuation mark ? It's called an ellipsis .
00:31 Writers use it to indicate that words have been left
00:34 out . Words are left unsaid . If you'd like
00:39 , you can watch my writing skills playlist and review
00:42 the ellipsis and other punctuation marks in english Right now
00:46 we're going to focus on ellipsis and spoken English spoken
00:50 american english . I'll take you through some patterns .
00:54 You need to be aware of them , listen for
00:57 them and be sure you're using them correctly and appropriately
01:02 . Let's start . Mm . Mhm . Ellipsis can
01:11 happen at the beginning , the middle or the end
01:14 of a sentence . Think about how we give short
01:17 answers to yes . No questions . We omit information
01:21 at the end from the predicate . Is he really
01:25 18 ? Yes , he is . Have you done
01:30 this before ? No , I haven't . Of course
01:36 . Some speakers would simply answer yeah or uh and
01:42 leave it at that . The full answer is understood
01:48 . Let's talk for a moment about the word that
01:51 it has different uses . When can we omit it
01:56 when that is part of a noun clause and the
01:59 noun clause functions as the object of a verb .
02:04 I think you should tell her the truth . He
02:09 said they'd made a mistake . Here are two more
02:15 that clauses . I'm so happy you called . I
02:22 was afraid you wouldn't want to talk to me .
02:26 These noun clauses aren't the object of a verb .
02:30 See how they each follow an adjective . They define
02:34 the adjectives . Why are you happy ? Why were
02:38 you afraid these are adjective complements ? And again we
02:43 can drop the word that the sentence is still makes
02:47 sense . The next few examples will be about informal
02:53 english when we speak casually and in a very familiar
02:57 tone , we tend to use abbreviated grammar . You've
03:01 probably noticed the use of informal yes , no questions
03:04 when the subject is you you coming , coming ,
03:14 you want to bite , want a bite , We
03:21 can drop the helping verb or the verb be and
03:24 sometimes we drop the subject pronoun you a word of
03:31 caution . Don't use these shortened questions with everyone you
03:35 meet . They can sound really familiar questions like ready
03:40 to go coming . Are often heard within a family
03:45 or between people with a very close relationship . And
03:49 to practice informal reduction like wanna and gonna . You
03:54 can check out my fast speech playlist , I'll put
03:57 the link in the video description . Here's another pattern
04:03 , informal statements made in the first person might omit
04:07 the subject pronoun . For example , someone says ,
04:10 hey , did you hear liam is dating Olivia ?
04:14 The response don't know . Don't care notice how this
04:19 is a negative response to something already said . Don't
04:23 know . Don't care , expresses a complete lack of
04:27 interest . Also an informal statements . We can drop
04:34 the subject it or there and the verb be mm
04:39 delicious . Hello , anybody home ? Think of all
04:51 the social niceties we say . Many of them use
04:54 ellipsis . So good to see you . My pleasure
05:02 , my bad . See you later . Let's see
05:11 how well you understand the patterns . I've shown you
05:13 so far . Look at all these statements which words
05:18 can be omitted . Yeah . With ellipsis here are
05:41 the shorter versions you done done . You need help
05:48 . Need help . I believe she deserves a second
05:52 chance . Yeah . Well , so many to choose
05:56 from . Nice to meet you . See you tomorrow
06:03 . What's your secret ? Not telling ? Yeah .
06:10 Okay , lets go on . When else can we
06:13 omit words after modal verbs we can leave out words
06:18 if the context makes everything clear . I'm not worried
06:24 about it . Well you should be . I don't
06:31 think I can do that . Sure you can .
06:35 It's easy . I didn't finish the report yet but
06:42 I will . He didn't help but he could have
06:54 some models and semi models use ellipsis in informal english
06:59 . You've probably heard or seen . Short forms of
07:03 have better and have got to for example , you
07:08 better not tell anyone . You've got to try harder
07:17 . And infinitive is two plus the base verb .
07:20 Sometimes we omit the base verb when the full infinitive
07:23 is understood from context . Why don't you go outside
07:28 and get some fresh air ? I don't want to
07:34 come visit us sometime . Thanks . I'd love to
07:41 . I mentioned the pattern that as part of a
07:44 noun clause as in I think that I know that
07:48 I understand that . We can also use that in
07:51 an adjective clause and we can omit a relative pronoun
07:56 in an identifying clause . That's an adjective clause with
08:00 information that's necessary to identify a person or thing .
08:07 Do you know the name of the woman mike is
08:09 talking to ? I have a copy of the report
08:16 you wanted . Oh , email it to you .
08:21 If you need to review adjective clauses , I'll put
08:24 the link in the video description to that playlist in
08:30 a series of items . We can use shorter phrases
08:34 if the grammar structure is the same for all the
08:37 items in that series . For example , Jeremy loves
08:41 to play soccer , golf , and tennis . Do
08:50 you remember what conjunctions are words like and or but
08:56 they join ideas together . And often we can omit
09:00 unnecessary words in the second clause or the second phrase
09:07 . This is for you and your parents . We
09:12 were tired but hungry so we ate before going to
09:15 sleep . All right . Time for a second quiz
09:22 . Which words can be omitted . Mm Yeah .
09:50 With ellipsis here the shorter versions . I really want
09:54 to go but I can't I don't have time today
09:58 but maybe tomorrow . I will . I really gotta
10:02 go now . Mhm . You should join our club
10:07 . I'd love to . I'll give you the draft
10:10 . I just edited Yeah . You can boil fry
10:15 your poached eggs . Yeah . I want to visit
10:18 Alaska and see the glaciers . Mhm . Yeah .
10:25 Here's a bonus question . Can we omit words from
10:28 this statement ? We can but we need to make
10:35 a small change . Look sometimes dropping words leads to
10:43 the use of a helping verb , which helping verb
10:47 the same one . You would need to form a
10:49 question . So generally speaking any time the situation makes
10:56 information clear . We can leave out words . Can
11:01 you meet on monday ? Yeah , but after two
11:05 would be best . I have a sweater just like
11:10 kates . Do you have two fives for a 10
11:20 ? If you want to review us currency by the
11:23 way , check out the video I have on that
11:25 topic . I'll put the link in the video description
11:28 but back to omitting words . If you're ever in
11:31 doubt , then don't leave words out . It's better
11:34 to be clear . Omitting too many words or omitting
11:38 the wrong words can create miscommunication and you don't want
11:42 that . So you're becoming aware of all these different
11:45 patterns . Listen for them and in time as you
11:49 become more familiar with them , your confidence will grow
11:52 and you'll be able to use them correctly and appropriately
11:57 . I bet there are other structures you've heard and
12:00 seen and learn to understand , even though words are
12:04 omitted . Let's see if you're familiar with these .
12:08 Can you find short substitutes for the words crossed out
12:26 ? Mhm . Here are the shorter versions . Do
12:34 you need my help ? If not then I'm gonna
12:37 head home . It's getting late . The doctor told
12:41 me I can use this as needed . Ben works
12:45 from home now . He only goes to the office
12:47 if necessary . Mm . Do you know the saying
12:55 if at first you don't succeed ? How does it
12:59 end if at first you don't succeed ? Try try
13:06 again . The saying is so familiar that we often
13:09 say just the first part and we assume that everyone
13:12 knows the rest . So we omit it . We
13:15 use ellipsis . Let's try this pattern with other common
13:19 proverbs and sayings . If one person , like a
13:24 child calls another a name or says something offensive .
13:28 The second person can say sticks and stones . What's
13:33 the full statement sticks and stones may break my bones
13:39 , but names will never hurt me . If one
13:46 person is freely criticizing others for faults that they themselves
13:50 have , you might offer some wisdom , you know
13:53 what they say . People who live in glass houses
13:59 , what's the full statement ? People who live in
14:03 glass houses shouldn't throw stones . Do you know another
14:10 well known proverb or saying , share it in the
14:13 comments right the first part and see if anyone can
14:17 finish it . We'll end here , please like and
14:22 share the video . If you found it useful as
14:25 always . Thanks for watching and Happy Studies . Thank
14:30 you to all the members of my channel and use
14:33 super and truly marvelous members . Look out for the
14:36 next bonus video . Yeah . Follow me on facebook
14:42 twitter and instagram and try something new , download the
14:46 app . Hollow and join me for a live stream
14:48 . Students can hop on camera and get speaking practice
14:51 in real time . Mm Yeah , yeah , yeah
