00:11	learning about the state of michigan . Doesn't that sound
00:15	like so much fun ? The state of michigan ,
00:22	the first thing we want to find out is where
00:24	michigan is . So here is a map of the
00:27	United States and we want to go ahead and locate
00:30	michigan because you might want to visit and if you
00:33	want to finish that , you got to know where
00:34	it is . So where is the state of michigan
00:39	? Do you know ? Yep , Michigan is up
00:45	here . Yeah , the state of Michigan is right
00:48	here on the United States map . Michigan is in
00:52	a region of the United States called the midwest .
00:56	Isn't that interesting ? Okay , now that we know
01:03	where Michigan is , let's go ahead and look at
01:05	two nicknames of the state of Michigan to learn even
01:09	more about this incredible place . Oh , the two
01:14	main nicknames of Michigan are the Great Lakes State and
01:20	the mitten state . That's right . The Great Lakes
01:23	State and the mitten state . Okay , so why
01:29	is michigan called the Great Lakes ST It's an interesting
01:34	name . We are actually going to use the Michigan
01:39	state quarter to show you why michigan is the Great
01:42	Lakes ST And you'll notice on this quarter , it
01:45	says Great Lakes ST Okay , so you know ,
01:49	it's official if it's on the quarter . So here
01:55	is the state of Michigan on this little picture on
01:58	the state quarter . The state of Michigan actually has
02:04	two parts the upper peninsula and the lower peninsula .
02:08	Michigan is the only state that's comprised of two peninsulas
02:15	. A peninsula is a piece of land that's almost
02:20	surrounded by water . But what is super cool about
02:26	Michigan is , it's bordered by four of the five
02:30	Great Lakes . It's true . Four of the five
02:34	Great Lakes up here is Lake Superior . And then
02:41	down here is Lake Michigan . Then over here bordering
02:47	Michigan to the east is lake here in and down
02:53	here is lake eerie . So michigan is called the
02:59	Great Lakes ST because it's bordered by four of the
03:03	Great Lakes . Okay , okay , that makes sense
03:08	. But why is michigan called the mitten state ?
03:11	It's a good question . Why is michigan called the
03:14	mitten stay ? Is it because everyone wears mittens ?
03:18	Actually , Michigan is called the mitten state because the
03:22	lower peninsula looks like a mitten . Yeah , those
03:26	are that look like a man . You just ,
03:27	I just want to wear it on a cold day
03:31	. We hope you've had a lot of fun so
03:36	far . Now we're going to look at the flag
03:38	of the mitten state , The Great Lakes State michigan
03:43	. Mhm Tara here is the flag of the state
03:47	of Michigan . It's a blue flag with the state
03:51	coat of arms in the middle . Mhm . Yeah
03:56	. In the very center of the coat of arms
03:58	is a frontiersman . He's on a peninsula by a
04:01	lake . Which makes sense because this is michigan shield
04:07	in the center is held up by an elk and
04:09	moose . It's nice to see the animals working together
04:12	and they depict the great animals of michigan . The
04:20	bald eagle above them represents the United States because the
04:23	bald eagle is the official bird of the United States
04:27	and a powerful symbol of our country . Then there
04:32	are three latin phrases on the coat of arms .
04:36	The top one means out of many one and the
04:39	one on the blue shield means I will defend .
04:42	And on the bottom it means if you seek a
04:45	pleasant peninsula look about you . Which is also the
04:49	official state motto because guess what Michigan is made up
04:52	of two peninsulas . Okay . Two peninsulas and upper
04:56	peninsula And the lower one . Okay , supercool and
05:00	supercool flag . Wonderful ! Now we are going to
05:06	locate to special places in the state of Michigan .
05:10	The first place is the city of Lansing . Lansing
05:14	is the capital of Michigan . Then further south and
05:20	to the east is the city of Detroit . Detroit
05:24	is the largest city in michigan . You can see
05:27	it pictured here . The city of Detroit is actually
05:33	on the United States Canada border . It happens to
05:38	be the largest city on the United States Canada border
05:45	. The city of Detroit is also a major port
05:48	. Doesn't it look beautiful ? It's not only the
05:50	largest city on the United States Canada border . It's
05:54	the second largest city in the midwest behind Chicago .
05:59	All right , here's our final question . What is
06:02	the state bird of michigan ? Okay , the state
06:09	bird of michigan is the american robin . Yeah ,
06:12	the american robin . Mhm . These cute songbirds are
06:17	some of the most abundant of all the birds in
06:20	north America . That's right . One of their tricks
06:26	is to feed in groups that way . They could
06:29	be very watchful to see if there are any predators
06:32	and if there's a reaction that one of the american
06:35	robins has . The other american robins . No ,
06:38	hey , we gotta get out of here . It's
06:39	not safe . There's a cat up in here .
06:42	There are snakes or hugs , who knows ? But
06:46	they're able to kind of protect each other that way
