00:01 Yeah . In this video we are going to learn
00:09 about metaphors . That's a fun word to say isn't
00:12 it metaphors ? You're gonna understand what metaphors are and
00:17 how to use them 1st . What is a metaphor
00:23 ? What is a metaphor ? Well a metaphor is
00:29 a way of comparing two things . It's not the
00:33 only way to compare two things but it's a very
00:36 interesting and creative way of comparing two things . You
00:43 might have seen examples of metaphors in books and in
00:46 poetry . And there's a really big chance that you
00:52 use metaphors in your everyday speech is you're speaking to
00:55 people . We just use metaphors from time to time
00:58 . And bob loves using metaphors when he speaks to
01:01 me . He loves comparing things now . Really creative
01:04 way metaphors are unique because they compare things without using
01:12 the words like or as and we're gonna look at
01:16 some examples . At first they're going to look a
01:18 little bit weird but then you'll get the hang of
01:21 it and you'll see how fun they are to use
01:26 . Here's an example . Ben was a cheetah at
01:30 the race today . Ben was a cheetah at the
01:34 race today we are comparing in this sentence Ben to
01:38 a cheetah because he went so fast and cheetahs are
01:42 the fastest land animals in the world . So we're
01:45 comparing then to a cheetah , it's a metaphor because
01:50 we're making this comparison without using the words like or
01:55 as yeah , we mentioned earlier that metaphors can sound
02:02 silly . That's because in our example , Ben is
02:05 not really a cheetah , even though we said Ben
02:08 was a cheetah at the race today . It's a
02:11 way of comparing that makes it sound like there's no
02:14 difference between them at all . Let's look at our
02:20 metaphor again . Ben was a cheetah at the race
02:24 Today is a metaphor . It's comparing Ben to the
02:27 cheetah and it's not using the words like or as
02:32 okay , let's pretend we did use the word like
02:38 or as what if our example was Ben was like
02:42 a cheetah at the race today . That makes it
02:45 a different type of comparison . Called a simile .
02:49 A simile . A simile is different than a metaphor
02:54 because a simile makes a comparison using the words like
02:58 or as remember metaphors are comparisons that do not use
03:07 like or as metaphors , metaphors are comparisons that do
03:16 not use like or as look at this example the
03:20 snow was a white blanket on the ground . The
03:25 snow was a white blanket on the ground . Yeah
03:30 . In this metaphor we are comparing the snow to
03:34 a blanket . Mhm Yeah notice you don't see the
03:40 word like or as this is definitely a metaphor because
03:44 it's a comparison that is not using the word like
03:47 or as let's think back to our examples , the
03:52 first one , Ben is compared to a cheetah and
03:55 he is called a cheetah . The comparison doesn't use
03:59 the word like or ask . So that was a
04:01 metaphor . A metaphor speaking to how fast Ben was
04:06 running . Yeah . In our second example the snow
04:13 was compared to a blanket . The metaphor said that
04:17 the snow was a blanket on the ground . That's
04:21 a comparison that is not using the word like or
04:26 as Mhm The second metaphor speaks to the appearance of
04:31 the snow on the ground . Mhm metaphors a metaphor
04:39 is a comparison that does not use the words like
04:42 or as look at this example . Mhm . Learning
04:48 is a piece of cake with home school pop .
04:51 This is a good example . Learning is a piece
04:54 of cake with home school pop . This is a
04:57 metaphor comparing the learning that you get with home school
05:00 pop to cake to a piece of cake . A
05:07 piece of cake is a common metaphor speaking to how
05:10 easy something is . Just like it's easy to eat
05:13 a piece of cake . Learning with Home School Pop
05:16 in this example is easy . This is the metaphor
05:19 learning is being compared to a piece of cake without
05:24 using the words like or as metaphors are comparisons that
05:32 do not use like or as they're simple , they're
05:37 fun and they are a creative way of comparing two
05:41 things . I am a block of ice . Know
05:47 that that's not a metaphor . I'm not comparing myself
05:49 but I'm frozen . Okay . Big eyes , cute
05:54 . Mr Whiskers was in this lab with me .
05:56 Mr was Mr Whiskers . This ice is melting .
06:00 Shouldn't take too long . Where's Mr West cars ?
06:05 Where are no metaphors ? A way of comparing two
06:12 things without using like or as But this is not
06:15 a matter for I'm frowns on . Thanks for hanging
