02:50 lesson topics . Also , now that everyone is here
02:54 to please do make sure to hit the like button
02:56 . It helps others find our lessons . Okay ,
02:59 let's look at today's lesson boards . Let's take a
03:02 look . Today's topic is how to express wishes about
03:06 the past . So , uh , if you joined
03:09 last week , maybe you recognize this grammar . I
03:12 wish I had and I should have . We're going
03:14 to cover this again . We're going to review then
03:17 we're going to practice . I could have and I
03:20 couldn't have Finally . We'll end with some useful expressions
03:24 and some very , very basic grammar . Uh practice
03:28 . Okay , cool . So now everybody is here
03:31 . Let's get going . Let's talk about how to
03:34 use uh our review point again . So again ,
03:39 I covered this in last week's live stream and I
03:42 want to review it because one it's a very useful
03:45 grammar point , uh a useful pattern . But also
03:49 I want to review um the verb form we use
03:52 many people uh struggled a bit with this verb form
03:55 last week . So let's review uh different example sentences
03:59 from last week if you joined . So the first
04:02 way to express a wish about the past is with
04:07 I wish I had , I wish I had or
04:11 I should have , I should have . You can
04:14 choose one of these two . We tend to use
04:17 I wish I had together with a simple past tense
04:23 like point . So when we say for example when
04:26 I was a kid or this morning or last year
04:30 , like we tend to express a specific point in
04:34 time with I wish I had you can use I
04:39 should have to express the same feeling , but you
04:42 can drop , it's very common to drop the specific
04:45 past point in time . Okay , so to make
04:50 these patterns we use , I wish I had plus
04:53 the past participle form of the verb . I should
04:56 have plus past participle form too . So a reminder
05:01 , the past participle form is not past tense .
05:04 Uh it is not the infinitive form . So for
05:08 example , I wish I had eaten or I should
05:11 have eaten . That special form of the verb with
05:15 eat in this case needs to be used here last
05:18 week . I saw many in the chat using the
05:21 I N . G form . That's not correct .
05:24 Like eating or drinking , that's not correct . So
05:27 you need to use the past participle form . So
05:30 for today's lesson , of course you can send your
05:32 comments in the chat . You can send example sentences
05:35 in the chat and I will try to check live
05:38 . Okay , let's go to some examples and a
05:42 quick refresh . What does this mean ? So this
05:45 pattern means uh the desired action did not happen .
05:50 So I wish I had or I should have something
05:53 . Something means the desired action . The thing I
05:57 want , the action I wanted did not happen and
06:01 I feel unhappy about it . So let's look at
06:05 some examples . I wish I had taken some economics
06:10 classes in school . I wish I had taken some
06:14 economics classes in school . I wish I had taken
06:19 is my past participle verb some economics classes plural here
06:25 in school . So I've used I wish I had
06:29 this . I wish I had pattern and I've used
06:32 it together with this simple , like I'm talking about
06:35 a past point in time or past period in school
06:39 here . Yeah . So this is a very common
06:42 example sentence I wish I had and a past point
06:47 , quick note , pronunciation note . I wish I
06:50 had , I wish I had becomes reduced . We
06:53 reduce this to I wish I'd So at native speed
06:57 , I would say this sentence like I wish I
06:59 had taken some economics classes in school . It's quite
07:02 quick . Yeah . Like I wish I had becomes
07:04 , I wish I'd taken , I wish I'd take
07:06 him . So this I had in particular is reduced
07:10 to I'd wish I'd taken some economics classes in school
07:15 . Okay , so let's look at the second example
07:18 here . I should have gone to bed earlier last
07:23 night . I should have gone to bed earlier last
07:26 night and it's very common to use this without last
07:30 night . Just I should have gone to bed earlier
07:32 . I should have gone to bed earlier . Right
07:35 . Here is another pronunciation point . I should have
07:38 . I should have , this should have is reduced
07:42 to Suga should have gone to bed earlier . I
07:44 should have gone to bed earlier . Okay . Uh
07:50 , Mario has a good question . What about ,
07:52 I wish I could as a instead of I wish
07:55 I had yeah , you can use , I wish
07:57 I could have to express that something in the past
08:02 was impossible . But you wanted to do it .
08:05 So I wish I could have taken some economics classes
08:09 in school . Totally correct , totally correct . It
08:12 means it was impossible . Maybe your schedules too busy
08:15 . For example , this one just means I did
08:18 not do it . I wish like I had ,
08:22 so I wanted to . So the nuance changes there
08:26 . His journey on Youtube says , I wish I
08:28 had studied more for my exam . Good , nice
08:31 example . Okay . Um , Taro Drc's should have
08:35 gone . No , that is a very common mistake
08:37 that native speakers make a lot in speech should have
08:41 gone . Sounds like should've gone . Should have gone
08:44 . So many native speakers make a mistake right here
08:47 . They use of uh , oh f of totally
08:52 incorrect , totally wrong . Should have gone , should
08:55 have gone . So please don't use of there .
08:58 It is totally incorrect . And yes , native speakers
09:01 make that mistake a lot . Why don't I make
09:04 a new video for ask Alicia ? There's new videos
09:06 every about every week . I think . I think
09:09 so . Okay . And I don't see other questions
09:13 . So let's look at the negative and yeah ,
09:15 okay , let's compare this to the negative . I
09:18 wish I hadn't and I shouldn't have I wish I
09:22 hadn't and I shouldn't have plus the past participle verb
09:25 the same verb form here yet . I wish I
09:28 hadn't eaten or I shouldn't I shouldn't have eaten this
09:32 shouldn't have is should not have and this I wish
09:36 I hadn't is I wish I had not . Okay
09:41 I wish I had not I shouldn't have is I
09:44 should not have for this means an undesirable action happened
09:50 . So the negative pattern this negative pattern means something
09:53 in the past happened . Yes but it was not
09:57 good . I do not want that action . It
10:00 was bad . It was not not a good situation
10:03 . So let's look at some examples of this .
10:06 I wish I hadn't watched so much tv this year
10:13 . I wish I hadn't watch so much tv this
10:15 year . Some people ask can I use to hear
10:18 T . 00 Oh no no you cannot use to
10:21 I wish I hadn't watched so much tv this year
10:25 . So that means I watched a lot of T
10:27 . V . I wish I had not watched that
10:31 much Tv . Uh Austin says uh question Alicia I
10:35 wish you were here . How about that ? Grammatically
10:38 correct , grammatically correct . I wish you were here
10:40 , expresses a wish about the present though to express
10:44 a wish about the past . I wish you had
10:47 been there . I wish you had been there .
10:50 So you can change this right here in these patterns
10:53 to express a wish about someone else . Okay is
10:58 this alive or premier ? This is alive . We're
11:00 alive every week . Uh What Giancarlo on facebook says
11:05 . What about present participle of that example ? Do
11:08 you mean ? Maybe this example ? Uh Like uh
11:13 I'm not sure which example that you mean . I'm
11:16 not sure . Okay . Uh Let's go to Next
11:21 example centers . Okay . Uh One more I should
11:24 have spent more time studying last month . I should
11:27 have spent more time studying last month . So in
11:31 other words I did not spend very much time studying
11:34 last month . And now I feel sad . So
11:37 I should have spent more time studying last month .
11:41 So here's my past participle verb . I should have
11:44 spent more time study . All right , That's it
11:49 for the first part . Again . This is a
11:51 review from last week . So we'll cover some new
11:54 stuff from part two today . Okay . Um Batna
11:58 says what about you ? Wish ? Yes you wish
12:00 you can use you wish to mean like usually as
12:03 a joke like you wish like something you want .
12:06 That's something you want . Not me . So kind
12:09 of different from today's topic . Okay let's take a
12:12 break . Take a break , take a break ,
12:15 take a break . That's funny . And then we'll
12:17 go to part two for today . So if you
12:20 missed it earlier today , we have a 47 off
12:23 sale on our website . If you want to study
12:26 English with us , You can check the link below

12:35 off our study plan . So check it out and
12:38 see if there's something that works for you . You
12:41 can find all kinds of different tools , Grammar lessons
12:44 , audio lessons , of course video , a bunch
12:47 of stuff . So check it out , take a
12:49 look . I hope it is helpful for you if
12:52 you're just joining live of course today's lesson is about
12:55 how to express wishes about the past which should have
12:59 and could have and a couple other things too .
13:02 So we are focusing on this past thing , right
13:05 ? We're focusing on talking about things we regret or
13:09 maybe things that were funny or embarrassing . Okay ,
13:13 So let's go to part two . Let's look at
13:15 our lesson boards very quickly . So we talked about
13:20 this point , our review point from last week .
13:22 Now let's talk about could let's talk about could have
13:25 and couldn't have and then we'll end with some quick
13:28 and useful expressions . Okay , so also reminder .
13:33 If you have not already , please , please please
13:35 make sure to like this video because it helps others
13:37 find the lesson and share . Of course to that
13:39 would be super cool . Okay , um let's go
13:43 to part two . Part two . Could have okay
13:48 , let's talk about . Could have This one confuses
13:51 many people , so we have visuals , we have
13:53 diagrams . Okay , so could have , I could
13:56 have plus plus , plus past participle verb , I
14:01 could have past participle verb . So this pattern is
14:05 the same as the pattern we used in part one
14:08 . Right ? We use could . That's the only
14:11 change here . I could have plus ever . So
14:14 what does this mean ? You cannot use this instead
14:17 of ? Should have like the grammar is correct .
14:21 Yes , but the meaning changes . So what does
14:24 this mean ? For example , I could have eaten
14:27 something . This means an action was possible in the
14:32 past . So here's a timeline , past now ,
14:36 future . An action was possible in the past but
14:41 it did not happen . It did not happen .
14:44 So we want to express possibility . Past possibility .
14:49 Okay . An action was possible in the past but
14:52 it did not have . So this one is very
14:57 common with if sentence patterns , if I had something
15:02 something , I could have something . Something . Yeah
15:05 , we practice conditional is quite often on these channels
15:09 . So , uh , we're going to practice a
15:11 couple of these with an if pattern , you can
15:14 send yours in the chat . I will try to
15:16 check live . Okay , okay , I'm looking for
15:20 your questions too . So let's take a look at
15:22 our could have example sentences , then I could have
15:27 learned a new skill this year . If I had
15:31 been able to focus , I could have learned a
15:35 new skill this year . If I had been able
15:39 to focus . So let's break this down here .
15:43 I'll use market real quick . What's happening here ?
15:47 I could have learned a new skill this year .
15:51 So here is where my here's where my main clause
15:54 ends . Yeah , I could have learned a new
15:56 skill this year . So right here , Oh ,
15:59 this is really hard . Okay , right here marks
16:03 , this past action that was possible . I could
16:07 have learned a new skill this year . But then
16:10 I say if I had been able to focus ,
16:14 that means I was not able to focus . It
16:17 was difficult for me to focus . It was a
16:19 strange year . So it did not happen . So
16:23 we have these two parts , this if part and
16:27 this main part . There are two parts here .
16:29 So I'm not going to talk about if conditional today
16:32 , but this is how we use could have let's
16:35 look at another example . This uses the opposite order
16:38 . If is at the beginning of the sentence .
16:41 So if I had seen your message , if I
16:47 had seen your message , I could have helped you
16:51 . If I had seen your message , I could
16:53 have helped you . So in this one we have
16:56 right here is our main cause . I could have
16:59 helped you . It goes to here . Yeah ,
17:02 I could have helped you . So that was the
17:05 possible action . I could have helped you . It
17:08 was possible . But here I have . If I
17:11 had seen your message , If I had seen your
17:15 message , this means I did not see your message
17:18 . I did not see your message . So this
17:21 did not happen . I did not help you .
17:24 So we just want to express that past possibility .
17:28 Also at native speed , we reduce these sounds right
17:32 here . I could have So this I could have
17:36 learned . Sounds like I could have learned . I
17:38 could have learned this whole sentence . I'll read the
17:41 sentence one time at native speed . Sounds like I
17:45 could have learned a new skill this year . If
17:46 I'd been able to focus . So my reduction ,
17:50 The short sounds come right here . I could have
17:53 And if I had been , these are the main
17:58 big reductions here . I could have learned becomes could
18:02 have and if I had been able , this part
18:05 becomes if I'd if I had been able . Okay
18:10 , so if I had seen your message , I
18:12 could have helped you . So please make sure to
18:15 use that reduction , that short sound in your speech
18:18 . Okay . Uh some of you are sending examples
18:21 so I will read a few out loud . Um
18:25 Zuzanna Orban . I'm sorry if I said your name
18:30 , Rona says I could have learned english if I
18:33 had had time if I had had time . So
18:37 a quick reminder when sometimes this verb is have the
18:42 past participle form is had if I had had ,
18:46 so there's two had there . It's correct . I
18:48 know it seems strange . It's correct though . If
18:51 I had had time . Okay uh Chong me on
18:58 facebook says what is the difference between could have helped
19:01 you ? Like I could have helped you and could
19:03 help you . So I could have helped you is
19:07 a passed sentence like pattern . I could have helped
19:11 you in the past . I could help you means
19:14 now . So like do you have time now ?
19:17 I could help you . Mm It's like an offer
19:19 . Now . I could have helped you means in
19:22 the past but it didn't happen . Okay . I
19:25 hope that helps . Okay , wow , lots of
19:28 examples are coming in . Um A J . Gabriel
19:32 says , can we say I could have played played
19:36 piano better ? Uh if I still learn it ,
19:40 you know , you can I'm not quite sure um
19:44 what you want to express . Maybe I could have
19:46 played piano better if I had studied more maybe .
19:52 Mm So this this is also a past structure .
19:56 Yeah . Past structure . Okay . Uh , some
20:01 of you and your example sentences on Youtube . You're
20:03 forgetting this half . I could have studied . I
20:08 could have learned so don't forget your helping verb here
20:11 . Yeah , this is important . Okay . All
20:14 right , let's go to the negative form then too
20:18 . The negative form . I couldn't have past participle
20:22 verb , I couldn't have past participle verb . So
20:26 I want to say this one is not as common
20:28 as this one . So we use this one uh
20:32 fairly often . Sometimes in speech this is less common
20:37 . So what do we use this pattern for ?
20:39 I could not have plus past participle verb . We
20:43 use this for an action or a condition . Usually
20:48 it's for a condition . So we want to express
20:51 some state a status . So an action or a
20:55 condition was not possible in the past because of a
21:02 different past action . So what's the difference ? I
21:06 could have here expresses something was possible in the past
21:11 . So it's uh it didn't happen . No ,
21:14 but it was possible . This one is the opposite
21:18 . This action in the past was not possible .
21:21 It's impossible . So we want to express that .
21:25 So one example , again , this one is not
21:28 as common . So I couldn't have known you were
21:34 coming today . I didn't see your message . I
21:38 couldn't have known you were coming today . I didn't
21:41 see your message . This means it was impossible for
21:46 me to know you were coming today . So I
21:49 didn't know . And there was no chance for me
21:52 to know because I didn't see your message . I
21:57 didn't see your message . So this one we don't
22:00 really use these if clauses with we don't really use
22:04 that . We use kind of a short past tense
22:07 example , sent a past tense explanation usually . So
22:13 what's happening here is I'm expressing this impossible action .
22:18 I couldn't have known you were coming today and this
22:21 sentence expresses the reason it was impossible . I didn't
22:26 see your message . So we used this past tense
22:28 . Yeah , I didn't see . So this is
22:32 different from the positive here . So I'm expressing this
22:38 is the condition where this action would have been possible
22:44 . So this is quite different to the two patterns
22:48 . Okay . Helen says what's the difference between ?
22:50 Could have and should have I talked about should have
22:52 in the beginning of this lesson . So please check
22:55 this stream after it has finished role . Okay ,
22:59 I'm looking for your questions . Uh people are just
23:04 writing . I didn't see your message , I didn't
23:05 see your message . I couldn't have booked a ticket
23:10 because I didn't know about it . So again ,
23:13 don't forget this helping verb . I couldn't have booked
23:18 a ticket , I couldn't have done something so don't
23:22 forget those helping verbs . Yeah okay . Um we
23:28 can say and we could say what's the difference between
23:31 them ? Can you give me an example like we
23:35 can we can use those to talk about like examples
23:40 or to imagine situations . Yeah . Uh kinda depends
23:44 a bit Ok . Oh my gosh let's go to
23:47 the end like that's all for part two . If
23:50 you have other questions you can send them of course
23:54 to our question and answer series . Okay um let's

24:19 to do you know that ? I think I don't
24:22 talk about that in live stream , but there are
24:25 teachers that will help you specifically individually checking your homework
24:29 and so on . So check the link below the
24:31 video uh , to find all of that on Youtube
24:34 . If you are watching on facebook , please check
24:36 the link above the video . Okey Dokey . Let's
24:41 go to part three . Of course . If you're
24:43 just joining , please do make sure please make sure
24:45 to like this video and share it so other people
24:48 can find today's lesson . I will show you our
24:51 lesson boards so that you can take a screenshot now
24:55 . Okay , so here is our flow for today
24:59 . Um , so first we talked about this part
25:02 right here , how to express wishes about the past
25:05 with , I wish I had and I should have
25:08 and shouldn't have . And we just finished this part
25:12 , I could have and I couldn't have . Now
25:14 let's finish with some very basic , very kind of
25:17 funny expressions you can use , uh , to react
25:22 two situations so you can react or you can share
25:25 your feeling about those past situations , about past regret
25:30 are about something funny or embarrassing that happened in the
25:34 past . Okay . Okay . Let's go to the
25:39 final points . Someone says , what is the difference
25:43 between has and had . I have many videos about
25:47 has and dad . Uh , please do a quick
25:49 search of our videos on our Youtube channel . Maybe
25:54 I'm not sure if it's on the facebook page ,
25:56 but please make sure to do a search for that
25:58 . I have made many videos . Okay , useful
26:01 expressions . Let's take a look at some useful expressions
26:05 or like reacting . So how do you express your
26:09 feelings about your past action ? For example , I
26:13 ate too much junk food and I use a pattern
26:16 like , uh , I shouldn't have eaten so much
26:20 junk food yesterday . I feel sick . That was
26:24 so stupid . That was so stupid . So this
26:29 , that was so , is a great pattern to
26:33 use to express your feelings about a past condition or
26:38 past action that you did . So I shouldn't have
26:42 eaten so much junk food . That was so stupid
26:45 . Oh no , so stupid means . Uh ,
26:48 it was not smart . Stupid is the opposite of
26:51 smart . So generally don't , don't say someone else
26:54 is stupid . That's not very nice . But you
26:56 can make a joke about yourself with stupid . That
26:59 was so stupid . So when I do something not
27:03 smart , I often said that was stupid . So
27:06 you can use it to all right , You can
27:09 use other adjectives in this pattern . You can send
27:12 them as well too . So that was so funny
27:14 as well . Like , oh , that was so
27:17 embarrassing . Like , oh my gosh , I shouldn't
27:20 have done the presentation with the coffee stain on my
27:24 shirt . That was so embarrassing , embarrassing means it
27:29 causes us to feel shame . We feel ashamed .
27:32 Something that is embarrassing . You can also use crazy
27:37 . Crazy . Well , I was so crazy .
27:39 So something that was hard to believe or just like
27:43 really , really uh kind of not normal you could
27:47 say . Well that was so crazy . Uh ,
27:50 dumb is the same as stupid . So that was
27:53 so dumb . Oh , that was dumb . So
27:56 you can express something was not smart , not smart
28:00 and fun . Of course you can be positive too
28:03 . Oh , that was so fun . That was
28:05 so fun . Yeah , so you can use these
28:08 to react as well . For example , your friend
28:11 says , oh , I wish I had joined you
28:14 on that camping trip last month . You can say
28:17 , oh yeah , I wish you could have joined
28:20 to . That was so fun or it was so
28:24 fun . Okay , all right , so let's look
28:29 at an example of this . Another one . I
28:31 wish I hadn't forgotten my wallet at home this morning
28:35 . That was so stupid . That was stupid .
28:38 So here's how we use the two together . We
28:41 express our regret , our wish about the past and
28:46 we use this pattern to express our feeling about it
28:51 . Okay , All right , so let's finish up
28:54 with a couple of just real quick expressions that you
28:58 can use this one . I can't believe I did
29:03 that . I can't believe I did that . Use
29:06 this expression when you feel surprised or shocked about your
29:11 action . So for example , I forgot my wallet
29:15 at home . Like , oh no , I forgot
29:17 my wallet at home . I can't believe I did
29:20 that . A native speed . He said , I
29:23 can't believe I did that . I can't believe I
29:25 did that . So we're shocked at our own behavior
29:29 . Here's another one when you make a bad decision
29:33 . When you make a bad decision , everybody makes
29:36 bad decisions . Sometimes when you do that , you
29:39 can say that was not a smart move . That
29:44 was not a smart move move means decision here .
29:48 So imagine like chess a board game or something ,
29:52 you make a move . We call this a move
29:55 a noun like move . And when it's a dangerous
29:59 move or you lose something , it's like , oh
30:03 , that was a bad decision . That was not
30:06 a smart move . That was not a smart move
30:09 . Okay , so a native speed that sounds like
30:11 , oh , that was not a smart , that
30:12 was not a smart , but that was not a
30:14 smart move . That was not a smart move .
30:17 Another thing you can do is this use sarcasm ,
30:21 say great job , but with this face . So
30:24 when you make a mistake , when you regret something
30:28 , you can say great job , great . So
30:32 this is a very common way to respond sarcastically .
30:36 You can use this to lastly , lastly , let's
30:40 end on a positive note . Yeah , something positive
30:43 . I'll do things differently next time I'll do things
30:48 differently in the future . So this is I will
30:52 , yeah , so I'm using Will because I decide
30:55 in the moment , so I will do things .
30:59 So that means like this situation , the things in
31:02 this situation , I'll do things differently next time ,
31:09 I'll do things differently next time or I'll be in
31:12 the future . So this is a nice positive expression
31:15 to finish today , I think , okay , who
31:20 be covered it all Great job . Alright , so
31:23 that's everything for this week . I'm looking for your
31:25 questions . I'll wait for another minute or so and
31:30 uh we'll wrap up there . So while we wait
31:32 I will show you our lesson boards again one more
31:35 time . So you can take a screenshot if you
31:37 would like . There you go . Okay . So
31:39 in this lesson we practice uh using . I wish
31:43 I had and I should have and the negative forms
31:46 we practiced could have and couldn't have and we reviewed
31:50 some good expressions to react and express your feelings about
31:55 these past situations . So I hope that you've got
31:58 some good grammar review especially with should have and could
32:02 have if you want some more information about those .
32:05 There are many videos on the channel . I'll put
32:08 I'll get some links . Uh we'll put some links
32:11 , some reference links in the Youtube description facebook ,
32:15 I cannot update your links on facebook but I can
32:18 update youtube so I will put some reference links if
32:21 you want to practice some of these grammar points a
32:24 little more . So please check the Youtube description .
32:27 You can get everything there , there's the link to
32:30 the sale . Uh You can find uh me there
32:33 too if you want to follow me on social media
32:35 . All of that is there . So uh we'll
32:38 wrap up for today . Lastly of course , next
32:42 week . Next week's information next week is Oh my
32:45 Gosh , December 16 . Only a couple weeks left
32:49 until the end of the God . So we are
32:51 going to talk positively next week . The topic I've
32:55 chosen is how to talk about your accomplishments . Your
33:00 accomplishments means the things that you achieved the things that
33:03 you did . So how do you express that ?
33:06 So this is good for job interviews in particular .
33:09 Uh And also how to politely express your accomplishments ,
33:14 the things that you achieve , like when you want
33:16 to share on like social media , for example ,
33:19 how do you do that ? Uh Like politely ,
33:22 yeah , so we're going to do that next week
33:25 , so please join me again and we will have
33:27 a good time . Okay ? So we have to
33:29 finish uh today's lesson . I don't see any other
33:34 questions , so I'll finish there for today . So
33:36 thank you as always for joining our live lesson this
33:39 week . Uh thank you for liking and sharing the
33:42 video of course , and thank you for your great
33:44 questions and your great example sentences . That was fantastic
33:48 . So enjoy the
