03:18 do you join last week High from Tokyo Sickling High
03:22 teacher , could you speak slower ? Yes , I
03:24 always talk fast at the beginning for announcements and things
03:28 . I'll go slow for the lesson . Okay ,
03:30 everyone is here . So let's get into the lesson
03:35 topics then . Okay . Also I'm going to share
03:39 the lesson and then we'll start . Okay . I
03:42 shared it . Cool , so let's look at today's
03:45 lesson boards . Today's lesson boards . Today's topic is
03:48 leveling up your vocabulary . This is what I have
03:52 prepared for today . So First we're going to talk
03:56 about some ideas like flash cards . Reading . 2nd
04:01 I have a writing tip for you and maybe a
04:04 speaking tip or challenge people who want to challenge themselves
04:09 and then last uh some other some some ways to
04:13 maybe find new words that you might not think about
04:18 . Some different ideas other than textbooks or media .
04:21 Also for today I prepared some of my study materials
04:25 to share with you so you can see and maybe
04:28 get some ideas . Um Just maybe it's useful for
04:32 you to see how I study . So let's begin
04:35 with part one for today . So how do we
04:38 level up our vocabulary ? Okay is everything okay ?
04:41 Facebook are you okay ? I see . Facebook facebook
04:44 is okay . I hope facebook is okay . Okay
04:46 let's get to part one for today's lesson . So
04:50 part one , let's begin with flashcards . Basic ,
04:54 very basic . Right . A flash card ? Uh
04:57 flashcards are great . If you use digital flash card
05:00 , if you use uh like hand made flashcards .
05:04 Whatever flashcards . So this is a great way to
05:10 study new vocabulary . Right ? So if you use
05:13 flashcards , remember not , don't study the same list
05:18 of flashcards forever . Right . Make sure that you
05:22 download a new list of words to study . If
05:26 you're using digital flash cards , download a new list
05:29 of words to study . So we have flash card
05:31 lists at english class 101 dot com . We have
05:34 a flashcard system . You can use to you can
05:37 check that or if you use a different app ,
05:40 if you use something else , you can download a
05:43 new list of vocabulary words to study . So mixture
05:47 you refresh your vocabulary lists . Yeah . Okay ,
05:51 so that's .1 two . Make your own word lists
05:56 . Make your own word lists from media from the
05:59 news , from your hobbies and so on . So
06:02 uh make something that's unique to you . If you
06:06 know there's something you want to study then you can
06:10 find some words about that . So put them all
06:13 in a like a list of your own and you
06:16 can study with that . Okay . All right so
06:20 this I want to show actually how I did this
06:23 this point . So studying with my own word lists
06:27 . Okay so in my case What I did is
06:31 I went to just the like my local uh station
06:36 in my local bookstore and I found this uh these
06:39 flash cards so they have a ring . I think
06:42 this was maybe like $1 or something like that .
06:44 So in my case I went to the store and
06:48 I bought this flash card thing , This little study
06:52 ring of flash cards . And I chose a website
06:55 . I had a website with vocabulary words I wanted
06:59 to study . So in my case what I did
07:01 to create my flashcards , I wrote one word in
07:06 this case I'm studying japanese , you can use it
07:08 for english . So I said I put one word
07:11 , let me find a word that's good here .
07:13 Okay , so I put one word in japanese ,
07:16 you can use english on one side and on the
07:19 other side I wrote my translation , the translation in
07:23 my language english . And then I like to ,
07:26 I also put a number on my card . So
07:29 each one like this one is number six . It's
07:31 hard to see but I put a number on these
07:34 so that I remember how many words I've studied .
07:38 So I like to do this style flashcards study because
07:43 I can throw this in my bag and go and
07:46 yes , you can use digital flash cards as well
07:50 on your mobile phone or something . But for me
07:53 , I know I get distracted sometimes . Like I
07:57 want to check , twitter , check social media ,
07:59 something like that . Uh maybe look at my email
08:02 . So I like using these because if I'm going
08:07 somewhere like on the subway or the train or in
08:10 a car , I can take these out and study
08:12 at any time and they're very small . So this
08:15 is what I actually do when I want to study
08:19 something like targeted . Okay , so this is my
08:22 , my personal tip for flashcards . Okay . Uh
08:26 then The other point that's on this , the other
08:30 point here is about reading , reading , this is
08:33 point number two I want to talk about . So
08:37 when you read something , make sure you're reading actively
08:43 actively . So you can read books , you can
08:46 read newspapers , articles , you can read online ,
08:50 you can read something in front of you on paper
08:53 . Okay ? So you can choose something to read
08:57 and then as you read you can write down or
09:02 highlight new words you find right down or highlight new
09:07 words you find . I'll show you an example of
09:10 how I do this when I read something too .
09:13 Okay ? And then as you read , make your
09:17 own sentences with the new words , make your own
09:20 sentences . So don't only consume the information , try
09:25 to make your own creation with those new words and
09:29 of course review . Review . So a lot of
09:32 people , they read one time or listen one time
09:36 , but we have to review to make sure we
09:39 get and we keep all of the information . So
09:42 I'll show you an example of how I do this
09:46 , my kind of style for doing this . So
09:48 in this case I have a book here . This
09:50 is just a normal book I chose at the bookstore
09:53 . Uh so when I want to focus on vocabulary
09:57 actually I know vocabulary is my weak point . Um
10:01 when I when I want to work on my vocabulary
10:05 I will read a book . So I read the
10:08 book . Maybe you can see here . And when
10:10 I find a word as I'm reading I don't know
10:13 I use a yellow highlighter and I highlight it right
10:16 here . So there's maybe in this page three or
10:20 four words I don't know . So I don't stop
10:24 when I'm reading but I mark the word and then
10:27 at the end of the page or when I finished
10:30 this part of the chapter . So maybe I finished
10:33 reading this page . Then I have a notebook where
10:37 I write down my new words , I write down
10:41 the new words I learned and I check the dictionary
10:44 for translation . Okay so this is how one ,
10:48 this is one thing that I do when I'm studying
10:51 . So some questions are coming in about this then
10:54 uh Ballarat um says , what kind of books do
10:56 you recommend ? Um Whatever is interesting for you .
11:01 So a book that is interesting is the most important
11:04 . You should want to read your book . Um
11:07 second choose a book . That's good for your level
11:11 . So when I showed you the , when I
11:14 showed you this page and they're okay , here's a
11:16 different page . I show you a page and on
11:19 this there's maybe like one or two words per page
11:23 , maybe three or four . So I try to
11:25 choose a book that I can understand maybe 70 or
11:30 80 of pretty easily . So something that is too
11:35 challenging is no good . Like if I make a
11:38 mark , every sentence is too difficult for me .
11:42 So choose something that you feel you can understand maybe
11:46 70-80 of if it's a children's book , that's okay
11:51 . No problem . Like Children learn Children learn from
11:53 that . So that would be my recommendation . Uh
11:57 something you are interested in and something that you can
12:00 understand a lot of already . Okay . All right
12:04 . Uh I don't see other questions yet . I
12:08 think facebook is a little bit behind us today ,
12:10 but they'll catch up . Okay . All right ,
12:12 so those are the first two points . So we'll
12:16 take one quick break and then we'll go to um
12:19 my really kind of interesting tip about your writing .
12:23 Okay , So if you missed it earlier real quick
12:26 . There is this banner below the lesson frame here
12:30 , but this free pdf cheap banner , if you
12:33 want to pick up some study materials to work on
12:38 your vocabulary , you can check this out . Uh
12:41 This is the shopping one , but on the back
12:44 this includes some verbs , so shopping related verbs in
12:48 this case . Uh and so each one of these
12:52 , each pdf here has different vocabulary , different expressions
12:57 that you can practice . So if you want to
13:00 build your vocabulary , these could be a great way
13:03 to do that . So check the link below the
13:06 video . If you're watching on Youtube or above the
13:08 video , if you're watching on facebook and you can
13:11 download these . So check it out . I hope
13:13 it's helpful . Okay , let's go to the next
13:17 part . So part two for today . Let's go
13:20 to that and we'll cover some writing tips in this
13:24 one . Also , if you haven't , please please
13:26 please make sure to like this video and share it
13:29 to some other people can find today's lesson . All
13:32 right , let's go a writing tips . So to
13:36 level up your vocabulary there is a great tip you
13:40 can use which is to stop using words like these
13:46 if you joined last week's live lesson . Uh maybe
13:49 you remember I talked about these words intensive fires .
13:53 Yeah very or really or so . So a good
13:58 way to level up your vocabulary or to practice using
14:03 more difficult words is to stop using very or really
14:07 or so before adjectives . So you can send your
14:11 ideas in the chat . What do I mean by
14:14 this ? So in your writing this is easier for
14:18 writing but you can try it and speaking if you
14:20 like when you want to say for example this food
14:24 is very good for food . So don't write .
14:28 Uh this is very good . Try delicious . So
14:32 delicious means very good , right ? But it's one
14:36 word . So we become more efficient . We use
14:39 one word instead of two and this word , it's
14:44 like we think of these as like higher level words
14:47 than just this . So let's look at some more
14:50 examples of this . How do we change these two
14:53 words into one ? Like so beautiful . You could
14:57 say , oh that's so beautiful or that's gorgeous ,
15:01 gorgeous , so gorgeous is like so beautiful . These
15:04 two words together . Here's another one really hard .
15:09 This game is really hard . We could say it's
15:12 complicated , complicated and you could choose a different word
15:17 here as well . Another example , something is very
15:21 bad . It's terrible , it's terrible . It's awful
15:26 . So this is the idea instead of saying very
15:29 or so really try to use one word , just
15:33 one word similar . I'm so tired , we could
15:37 say I'm exhausted . So exhausted means so tired or
15:42 really funny , we could say hilarious , that's hilarious
15:47 . So think about these ways that you can combine
15:50 like put these two words together to make one word
15:54 . This is a good way to build your vocabulary
15:57 and you can do this as I said when you're
16:01 writing , try this . When you're writing . If
16:04 you want an extra challenge , you can try this
16:06 when you're speaking but it's sometimes difficult to remember very
16:12 quickly even for me uh to use to to follow
16:16 this rule . So this is a really good tips
16:18 to improve your vocabulary when you're writing . Okay .
16:23 Javier has a good one in the Youtube chat .
16:26 Very important . Could mean crucial , crucial . Okay
16:30 good . So here's a tip . Um Yeah and
16:34 this is the key point here . Practice using one
16:36 higher level word , one of these words to express
16:40 yourself instead of two basic words . So just check
16:44 your writing . Yeah when you finish writing something do
16:47 a check . Do like a very so really check
16:50 did you use that word ? And how can you
16:53 make it one word ? So look for this pattern
16:57 . Okay Ali Reza says any tips for teaching vocabulary
17:04 ? Sometimes I find it difficult to teach vocabulary .
17:06 Do you mean like in an in person lesson ?
17:09 Because what I did like um in the past what
17:12 I've done when we are working on new vocabulary in
17:17 the classroom is the students . I hope always want
17:22 the students to read the information before the lesson .
17:25 So I I asked them or I expect them to
17:30 come to the lesson . Uh They read that lessons
17:34 information , they take notes before the lesson and have
17:38 some questions . Uh So there are prepared before the
17:42 lesson and then at the beginning of the lesson I
17:46 review the key vocabulary and I share any small points
17:52 to review what they already uh studied at home and
17:56 then they can ask me questions that they had .
18:00 And then finally we do some practice in the lesson
18:03 where I try to pinpoint we do speaking practice uh
18:08 in the lesson where I try to pinpoint those vocabulary
18:12 words . So choosing especially common vocabulary words or maybe
18:17 tricky vocabulary words . We do some speaking practice with
18:20 those . Uh And then I send them like an
18:23 email or a report after the lesson that uses some
18:27 of those keywords as well . So review review .
18:30 Review . Review review is a key point . So
18:32 I hope that helps you um thinking about your studies
18:36 for teachers as well , teaching and study . Okay
18:41 Guillermo says what about formality ? Is the two word
18:44 form less or more formal than the version with just
18:48 one ? A good question . I wouldn't say like
18:52 these are not impolite to say , oh this is
18:55 very , very beautiful or uh this is very good
18:59 . It's not impolite to say that . Um I
19:03 would say maybe so beautiful . Uh it sounds a
19:08 little , can sound a little bit casual , but
19:12 it just depends on your kind of attitude in your
19:15 tone of voice . Like if you go to a
19:17 nice dinner party and you say , wow , your
19:19 home is so beautiful . That's very polite . That's
19:22 a very nice comment . So it kind of depends
19:25 on your tone of voice a little bit , but
19:27 there's not really a formality difference here . Uh someone
19:32 on Youtube says , can I say haggard instead of
19:35 very tired ? You can , so , haggard also
19:38 refers to the way someone looks , so someone looks
19:41 really tired , like their faces kind of drooping and
19:44 their hair is super messy and uh they're like really
19:49 grumpy or something like that , that someone who's haggard
19:53 . Yeah . Okay , Good , good , good
19:56 . All right , thank you for your questions .
19:58 Okay , so this is my second tip for today
20:01 . I think this is a good tip for writing
20:04 . All right , we'll take one more quick break
20:07 and then we'll go to my last , my last
20:10 group of tips and I'll show you some other stuff
20:13 from my study notebooks and maybe you'll get some ideas
20:16 . So if you missed it , please don't forget
20:19 to check the link below the video . If you're
20:21 watching on Youtube or above the video , if you're
20:23 watching on facebook to find free pdf sheets you can
20:28 use to build your vocabulary . Here's a different one
20:32 . Here's a time planning one . Yeah , everybody
20:35 loves to plan time . Right ? So here are
20:37 some vocabulary words on the back for making plans and
20:41 talking about time . Don't forget your prepositions down here
20:46 . So you can check these out , choose a
20:49 topic that looks interesting to you . Maybe this one
20:53 is good as our lessons are online . So check
20:56 these out . You can download all of them if
20:59 you like . And the team is adding new pdf
21:02 all the time . So check it out sometimes if
21:05 you haven't checked in a while . Uh take a
21:07 look and see if there's something okay . Um And
21:13 egg deal Kalina . What is the best way to
21:15 learn through a book ? I talked about that in
21:17 part one of today's lesson . So after after this
21:20 dream you can watch part one uh to get some
21:23 tips about how to use a book to read or
21:26 to to learn how to practice learning new vocabulary with
21:31 a book . Okay let's go to the last part
21:33 of today's lesson . Here we go . So to
21:37 level up your vocabulary ? Uh first Right with new
21:44 words right ? With new words . So in part
21:47 one , I talked about flash cards and I talked
21:50 about reading and creating new word lists for yourself .
21:55 Right ? The next part is to write with new
21:59 words . To write with new words . So for
22:01 example you can make a diary or a journal for
22:06 writing practice . So make sure you create with the
22:11 new words , don't just consume them , don't just
22:13 input . Also output to make sure you can level
22:17 up your vocabulary . Okay then try creating questions with
22:23 new words . This is something that I do that's
22:27 really challenging sometimes , but I like to do this
22:31 because uh it forces me to think in new ways
22:35 . So try creating a question with your new word
22:38 . And then of course review Review . Review review
22:42 . So whatever you write in your journal or on
22:44 the piece of paper , make sure you come back
22:47 and look at it again . Finally , another idea
22:51 . Try translating a sentence or a paragraph . I'll
22:55 show you an example of this in just a second
22:57 . But if you are reading like an article or
23:00 a book or something , and do you think ,
23:03 oh , this is kind of interesting , How would
23:05 I say this in my language ? You can ,
23:07 after you read , you can try to translate it
23:10 yourself uh if your translation is not perfect , it's
23:13 okay , you're just studying , just practicing , right
23:17 ? So I'll show you , I'll show you an
23:19 example of how I'll show you some examples of how
23:23 I practice writing for beginners for intermediate and for more
23:28 advanced learners . So , first , if you want
23:30 to practise uh just like very , basically very basic
23:35 steps that creating letters , you can just do lots
23:38 of repeated study . So in this case , because
23:41 I'm studying forever , I'm studying japanese . I just
23:45 practiced making characters many many times and this helped me
23:50 a lot . So if you are practicing nicer english
23:54 writing , you can do this with big letters or
23:57 with small letters if you're super beginner , but for
24:01 making sentences and vocabulary practice . So I showed you
24:05 , I showed you this earlier uh like I choose
24:08 keywords that I don't know from the book . In
24:11 this case I write the page number , this is
24:14 just for me . I write the page number and
24:16 I write the vocabulary word I don't know and then
24:20 I look it up and then later I'll often make
24:24 a sentence with it . So let me find an
24:26 example for you of a sentence that I made later
24:29 . Okay , so here we go . So further
24:33 , this is this is a different topic . But
24:36 after I researched some new words , I actually make
24:40 questions myself and they don't have to be perfect .
24:45 But I make my own questions inside my study journal
24:49 so that I'm reusing the vocabulary many times . Yeah
24:54 , so these questions I know it's in a different
24:56 language but this is my steady process . So maybe
24:59 it works for you . So I find words I
25:02 need to study and then I make questions with those
25:06 words on another page later . So this is how
25:09 I approach vocabulary studies . So maybe this is something
25:14 that can help you with your english studies . Yeah
25:17 , so lots and lots of review . Uh lots
25:20 and lots of repetition . Okay , so that is
25:24 my personal tip . Maybe it's helpful for you .
25:27 Let's go then to the last point for today .
25:30 At the last point for today . Yeah , I
25:32 see some comments from facebook . I think that facebook
25:36 is going a little bit slow . Sorry about that
25:38 . There was some kind of facebook issue . I
25:40 think the lesson is okay there now . Um Okay
25:44 so let's go to the last point that I have
25:47 for building your vocabulary . The last tip I have
25:51 is one that was very very helpful and is very
25:54 helpful for me . Uh it's to read social media
25:58 updates to read social media updates . Why ? Okay
26:03 so social media updates from your friends or from people
26:07 that you're interested in are really helpful because you can
26:11 find slang , you can learn different communication styles and
26:16 you can find real conversations about everyday life situations .
26:22 So you can see how people communicate and the kinds
26:26 of vocabulary words different people use . So you can
26:31 find a lot of words that maybe you wouldn't find
26:36 in a book or in a magazine article , right
26:38 ? You can understand someone's personality a little bit better
26:43 . So if you have an english speaking friend or
26:47 if there's like an english speaking celebrity or someone interesting
26:51 , maybe your favorite athlete , something like that ,
26:53 you can follow them and start to look at the
26:56 ways they use words . This was really helpful for
26:59 me . Uh like I check my friends or people
27:02 I'm interested in like their social media updates and I've
27:05 learned new words just from checking my friends , like
27:08 instagram posts . Like I look it up later ,
27:11 like what does that word mean ? And then I
27:13 get a new vocabulary word that I know they use
27:16 , so I know it's probably useful for me to
27:20 know that word . Okay , good . And also
27:24 a point it's okay if you don't understand 100 of
27:28 the social media update , it's okay if you don't
27:31 like I did at first I didn't , I saw
27:33 all this information and I thought oh my gosh ,
27:37 this is so difficult I don't understand . But after
27:40 studying , when you see it every day , you
27:42 see the updates every day , sometimes there's pictures and
27:45 so on . You start to learn how to use
27:48 those words . So this is another really great way
27:51 to level up your vocabulary and learn some new words
27:55 . Okay , so I hope that this is helpful
27:57 for you . All right . That's everything that I
28:00 have for today . Your questions um Ahmed says synonyms
28:04 can help us to learn more words that have the
28:07 same meaning . Yeah . What do you think ?
28:09 Sure . I would say ? I agree . Generally
28:12 . I think you should be a little careful with
28:15 synonyms because sometimes if you check up the saurus at
28:19 the saurus is like a dictionary , but for words
28:22 with similar meanings just make sure you understand the the
28:27 situations in which you need to use the word right
28:31 ? Sometimes you can get in trouble if you use
28:33 a word you think is a synonym but it's not
28:35 quite a synonym . Okay um Other questions about building
28:41 vocabulary , someone says I don't understand . Say it
28:43 again . This is being recorded . Please check the
28:46 video archive after this lesson . Okay . Um Rodrigo
28:52 says if we're watching movies without subtitles uh not legend
28:56 but subtitles if we're watching a movie without subtitles is
28:59 a good to learn faster . This is a tough
29:01 question . Everybody is a little bit different . Uh
29:04 So subtitles on like a movie or a tv show
29:08 you can choose subtitles in english , you can choose
29:10 subtitles in a different language you can watch with no
29:13 subtitles . I think there are benefits to every single
29:17 one . Right ? So it depends on the skill
29:20 I think you want to build and how comfortable like
29:23 is it easy for you to understand the movie or
29:27 the tv show ? If it's really hard for you
29:29 to catch all the words the characters are saying .
29:32 Maybe try turning the subtitles in . English on to
29:36 catch the words and then turn it off and watch
29:39 again . So again just reviewing , reviewing , reviewing
29:42 these are all steady tools you can use to review
29:46 and to get the information you need and the practice
29:49 you need in different ways . Yeah so I hope
29:52 that helps you uh someone says what books do you
29:55 recommend ? I answered this . I've answered this like
29:57 twice I think in this live stream I guess there's
30:00 no one perfect book . You need to choose something
30:02 interesting for you and at the right level . So
30:05 watch this from the beginning . Uh If you want
30:08 some more ideas for that . Okay , could you
30:11 pronounce also ? Also I hope that helps . Okay
30:15 . All right . Uh so I have to finish
30:17 up for today's lesson . Um I see lots of
30:20 people on facebook writing . Hello and thanks . Cool
30:23 . Uh Yeah , someone had a question about this
30:27 . The saurus , its a hard word to say
30:30 . The saurus is a good a good tool to
30:33 use . I use a thesaurus from time to time
30:37 . You can find an online thesaurus just like a
30:41 dictionary . So if you want to practise this tip
30:45 that I said where you want to use a different
30:48 word here instead of very good or so beautiful ,
30:52 you can use uh the saurus to do that .
30:54 But if you're not sure about the word you find
30:59 in the saurus , you can do a check like
31:02 a dictionary check check and online dictionary for some example
31:06 sentence . Okay let's finish so let's finish there .
31:11 Thank you for your great questions . We need to
31:14 end though . So I will share the information for
31:18 next lesson . All right . Next week I'll be
31:21 on spring vacation . Oh my gosh , I will
31:23 be gone next week but I'll be back the week
31:26 after that with a super good lesson . Uh next
31:29 lesson will be May 12th May 12 so I will
31:33 not see you next week . I hope you enjoy
31:35 your reading studies though . Your social media , you
31:39 can check social media updates in the meantime . So
31:42 enjoy a one week holiday from our lessons next week
31:45 . Yeah May 12:10 p.m. Eastern Standard time . That
31:48 is new york city time . If you don't know
31:50 your local time , please use your great google skills

32:03 a topic reminder in my story . So you can
32:06 find the live information there the next lesson . I'm
32:10 going to talk about common preposition , an adjective combinations
32:15 , for example , angry with or afraid of or
32:19 scared to and other things . So I wanted to
32:24 cover like um these little prepositions like and how we
32:28 use these in everyday life because in your comments ,
32:31 I noticed there are lots of very , very small
32:35 errors and we can practice them together to fix them
32:38 . So please join me again in two weeks for
32:42 this lesson and have a very nice break next week
32:45 . Okay , so I will say good bye for
