00:0-1 Hi , my name is Maria , I'm a mathematician
00:05 , and today I'm going to talk to you about
00:07 algebra and the Pythagorean theorem . So the pythagorean theorem
00:10 , which is a squared plus B squared equals C
00:13 squared , is used in right triangles . And it's
00:16 used to show the relationship between the different sides of
00:18 a right triangle . And it's really important to be
00:20 able to label are right triangle correctly and know which
00:23 part is which . So A . And B .
00:25 Are always going to be the legs of my right
00:27 triangle . When I say legs , I mean the
00:29 two sides that form the right angle , so that's
00:32 A . And that's B . And they are interchangeable
00:34 because these form the right angle , see is called
00:37 my hypothalamus . And there's two ways to remember the
00:40 hypothesis that you need to know both of them .
00:42 One is that it's always gonna be the longest side
00:44 of the right triangle , and two is that it's
00:46 always going to be a cross from the right angle
00:48 . So first you have to make sure you have
00:49 your triangle labeled correctly , A . And B .
00:51 Being the legs and C . Being the hypotenuse .
00:53 Now to use the pythagorean theorem , it depends on
00:56 which two sides of the triangle you're given . So
00:59 if I'm giving CMB , for example , let's say
01:01 I'm told that this is 10 inches and I'm told
01:04 that B . Is six inches and I'm asked to
01:07 find the value of A . When I go to
01:09 substitute into the pythagorean theorem , I have to be
01:11 sure that I substitute into the correct variable . So
01:14 I don't know A . I'm going to leave me
01:16 alone . I do know B . Is six inches
01:18 . So I'm gonna write six squared equals C .
01:22 Is 10 inches . So I'm gonna write 10 squared
01:23 and now I'm just gonna simplify A squared plus 36
01:27 equals 100 . And now this is a two step
01:29 equation . I'm gonna subtract 36 from both sides .
01:32 And when I do that I'm gonna get a squared
01:34 equals 64 . But I'm not done because I have
01:37 a squared and I need the I need just A
01:40 . So in order to just find A . You
01:41 have to do the inverse of squaring which is square
01:44 rooting . And when I do that I get A
01:46 equals eight . And I love the missing side of
01:48 my right triangle is eight inches . Now you just
01:52 have to be careful because if you are already given
01:54 A . And B , then that's what you're plugging
01:56 in and you never have to use inverse operations .
01:58 The only thing you have to do is square root
02:00 each side at the end of it . So right
02:02 , you're pythagorean theorem , label you're right triangle correctly
02:05 , substitute correctly and then simplifying . Don't take don't
02:08 forget to take the square root at the end .
02:10 My name is Maria and I just showed you how
02:11 to use the pythagorean theorem
