00:03 Uh huh . Okay . So far we've learned how
00:08 fractions represent parts of things and we've learned how to
00:10 do some simple math with those parts . But if
00:12 we want to really understand how fractions work , we
00:15 need to start thinking about them in a new way
00:17 . We need to learn what fractions really are .
00:19 A fraction is just a number that's written like a
00:22 division problem . You remember division right ? Where you
00:25 take one number and divided up by another number .
00:28 And you might also remember that there's different ways to
00:30 write a division problem . When you first learn about
00:32 division , you usually see division problems written like this
00:36 . Now that symbol in the middle just means divide
00:38 this number by that number . Then you learn it's
00:41 useful to write a division problem , a different way
00:44 like this . Now that's still the same division problem
00:47 . It just uses a different symbol to tell us
00:49 to divide . So that's two different ways to write
00:52 the same division problem . But wait there's more now
00:55 some of you who use computers a lot might have
00:58 seen division written like this now that slash is just
01:01 another way to write the division symbol . Now this
01:03 one's interesting . Watch what happens when we rearrange it
01:06 a little bit . Look familiar , yep . It's
01:09 a division problem that looks like a fraction and that's
01:12 just because a fraction really is a division problem .
01:15 But we treat it like a number . The line
01:17 between the top and bottom numbers is just another way
01:20 of writing the division symbol . The cop number is
01:23 the number being divided up and we call it the
01:25 numerator . The bottom number is the number we're dividing
01:28 by and we call it the denominator . Now let's
01:31 look at some of the common fractions that you're already
01:33 familiar with and think of them as division problems .
01:36 For example , one half or 1/2 is really just
01:40 one divided by two . The fraction two thirds or
01:44 2/3 really means two divided by three and the fraction
01:48 3/4 or 3/4 really means three divided by four .
01:52 Thinking about fractions . Like little division problems might seem
01:55 strange to some of you , especially because these division
01:58 problems show smaller numbers being divided by larger numbers .
02:01 You may not have seen that before . You might
02:03 not have even thought it was possible , but you
02:05 can divide a smaller number by a bigger one .
02:08 It just means that the answer you get is going
02:10 to be smaller than one . If the idea of
02:12 dividing a smaller number by a bigger one seems confusing
02:15 to you don't worry , it's going to make a
02:17 lot more sense in the next section when we learn
02:19 about decimal numbers and how they relate to fractions ,
02:22 let's review what we've learned so far . This section
02:25 was short but in it we learned the most important
02:27 thing there is to know about fractions . We learned
02:30 that fractions are numbers that are written like division problems
02:33 . The line between the top and bottom numbers is
02:36 another form of the division symbol that tells you to
02:39 divide the top number by the bottom number . The
02:43 top number is called the numerator and the bottom number
02:46 is called the denominator . It might be a new
02:49 idea to you but you can divide a smaller number
02:51 by a bigger number . This was a really important
02:54 concept we've covered So be sure to do the exercises
02:57 before you move on . Mhm . Learn more at
