Teaching Procedures, Rules, and Respect During the First Days of Seventh Grade - By SanBdoCitySchools
00:20 | mhm Yeah . Mm hmm . School is going to
00:28 | start next week And I was thinking about my number
00:30 | one goal and what that's going to be . So
00:33 | for me , I want my students to have a
00:35 | general idea of what the tone of my classroom is
00:38 | going to be for the remainder of the year .
00:41 | Good afternoon . We'll stop right here . Thank you
00:43 | so much for finding your seat immediately and following the
00:47 | instructions on the screen . I like how you're taking
00:51 | out a pencil already . Good job . Good afternoon
00:56 | . So setting routines on the first day of school
00:58 | is extremely important . It establishes for your students what
01:03 | your expectations are and they understand as soon as they
01:07 | walk into your classroom , they know what's expected of
01:09 | them . So practicing routines and establishing what the routines
01:13 | are going to be are extremely important . If you
01:16 | want your students to do well . We have tons
01:19 | of procedures that you're going to learn . Okay .
01:22 | We have a procedure for everything . I don't know
01:25 | about you guys , but I like when I go
01:27 | somewhere and I know what's expected of me okay .
01:31 | There's rules and procedures everywhere in life . When you
01:34 | go to the airport , there's a procedure . When
01:37 | you go to a restaurant and you're ordering food ,
01:41 | there is a specific way you have to order food
01:45 | . You're following procedures , you may not realize it
01:48 | , but each and every one of us every single
01:51 | day we're following procedures . So that's what I'm gonna
01:55 | do with you today . I'm gonna teach you what
01:57 | my procedures are . Alright , passing exchanging and collecting
02:02 | papers now in my class , there's a right way
02:06 | and there's a wrong way . The wrong way is
02:08 | front to back or back to front . It's important
02:12 | that you set the expectations in the classroom and the
02:16 | specific procedure , so it's more effective for me and
02:20 | the way my classroom is set up to pass the
02:23 | papers from left to right . It just makes it
02:26 | easier for me as a teacher , the right way
02:29 | is from left to right or right to left .
02:33 | And you're gonna set the papers neatly to your partner
02:37 | , hand it to them . Okay . So we're
02:40 | gonna practice . Can everybody hold this card in front
02:43 | of them when I say go , you're going to
02:50 | pass it to the left ? Okay . So they're
02:53 | gonna pass it all the way to you guys .
02:55 | But here's the thing , I don't want you guys
02:58 | to pass it to them until you received all of
03:02 | their cards . Okay . I don't want you to
03:06 | pass it to them until you received all of their
03:10 | cards . Is that clear ? I don't want you
03:13 | to pass it on until you received all of theirs
03:16 | . Is that clear ? Here's where the cards are
03:19 | going to end up . Once you pass it all
03:22 | the way to the left , the cards will end
03:25 | up on the corner of rear desks . Okay ,
03:29 | ready set and got practicing routines are very important .
03:37 | Um It establishes a sense of knowing what's expected and
03:42 | how to do it correctly . You can't expect your
03:45 | students to know the first time , um how to
03:47 | do it . So practicing , it gives them that
03:49 | opportunity to make sure they get it right and they
03:52 | do it right and it shows them that you are
03:55 | serious about that specific procedure or routine that okay took
04:05 | you guys 16 seconds . What you didn't know was
04:09 | I was timing you . That's okay . You didn't
04:12 | know that you were being timed . One other thing
04:14 | in my class are transitions . Our six seconds .
04:19 | First period got six seconds , Second period six seconds
04:25 | , Third period six seconds , Fifth period six seconds
04:29 | . We got 16 . Don't worry . Everybody else
04:32 | got a high number two at first . But then
04:34 | we practice and we were able to pass it all
04:37 | out in under six seconds . That's what we're gonna
04:40 | practice now . So last trophy , You're gonna grab
04:44 | one and pass the stack back . OK and go
04:49 | . So on day two , I like to wait
04:52 | to kind of focus on the rules and consequences and
04:55 | rewards . It's very important that you establish routine and
04:58 | procedures first . What are my rules ? I'm sure
05:02 | you're eager to know what my rules are . Well
05:04 | here in my classroom rules , I have five rules
05:07 | . Rules and procedures are different . Procedures are how
05:12 | you do things . There's a procedure for how to
05:16 | walk in . There's a procedure for how you check
05:19 | out a book from a library . That procedures are
05:22 | how you do things . Rules . Okay . Our
05:25 | list of expectations . Kind of just guidelines . So
05:29 | my rules are very basic . Just five general rules
05:32 | . Most of the rules are school based . Number
05:36 | one , No offensive language in this class , we
05:41 | respect each other . Just like I respect you .
05:45 | You respect your peers now . No offensive language does
05:49 | not only mean battle words . Okay , sometimes it's
05:54 | the way you say things that could come off me
05:58 | . So make sure you speak to each other respectfully
06:01 | and you don't use offensive language . Number two come
06:06 | to class prepared . That is paper and pencil .
06:10 | Now I know sometimes we get really busy . Sometimes
06:13 | our parents don't have time to take us to the
06:15 | store or we forget to ask , make sure if
06:18 | you need pencil or paper you can come to me
06:21 | , I will give it to you for free ,
06:23 | come to me after school and I will be happy
06:27 | to give it to you . So for my rules
06:29 | and consequences and rewards , I just kind of explain
06:32 | it to them and I let them know that they
06:34 | are part of the process and I do want their
06:36 | feedback and how we can make this a functioning fun
06:40 | classroom . And what rewards they're interested in . What
06:44 | happens if you break the rules in my class ?
06:46 | What happens if you break the procedures ? Let's say
06:50 | you don't come in quietly . Let's say you decide
06:52 | to talk and to with your partners or or just
06:56 | mess around . Here are some consequences . Now ,
07:01 | I may give you a warning . Sometimes that warning
07:04 | is , let's say you're doing something you're not supposed
07:06 | to be doing . I'll look at you and expect
07:09 | you to change your behavior immediately . Now , if
07:12 | you don't change your behavior , what will probably have
07:15 | to do is go over social skills during lunch .
07:19 | Review them until you get it . Okay Now you
07:22 | don't want to spend your lunch time in here .
07:24 | That's the time where you can go out with your
07:26 | friends and have fun . Okay , So don't get
07:29 | past the verbal warning . You don't want to get
07:34 | past that . Okay . And if that doesn't work
07:38 | , we're gonna have to establish a working plan with
07:40 | you . Maybe your counselors , maybe your parents ,
07:44 | whatever it takes , whatever it takes to fix the
07:47 | behavior . Okay , rewards . I like to reward
07:51 | my students . I like to stay in this area
07:54 | . Here are the different types of words by the
07:56 | way , I will allow you guys also very soon
08:00 | to choose what rewards you'd like to have in the
08:04 | classroom . Okay . What are some things that interest
08:06 | you ? Maybe these are outdated ? Maybe this doesn't
08:11 | interest you anymore , but let me go over them
08:13 | first . Homework pass respect is a conversation . Um
08:19 | , and an idea that has to be kind of
08:21 | collectively shared amongst everyone in the room in the environment
08:25 | . So it's very important for me to allow my
08:27 | students to establish what they feel respect looks like in
08:32 | the classroom . So I really wanted to give them
08:34 | that opportunity . Just waiting for all eyes on me
08:39 | . Excellent . Perfect respect is big in my class
08:44 | . If you are going to be successful in my
08:47 | class , you must understand what it means to be
08:51 | respectful . You will find that I am respectful of
08:55 | you from day one all the way to the very
08:57 | end of the school year , I will always respect
09:00 | you . Okay . Now , what I need to
09:03 | teach you is how to be respectful to each other
09:07 | , to my classroom and to the things that we're
09:10 | doing okay with all of the things that we do
09:13 | . It's important that you are respectful . So here's
09:16 | a definition that we're going to focus on for respect
09:19 | . Let's do a close reading , read the words
09:21 | that I pause on . Okay to value or the
09:25 | worth of people . And I first kind of outlined
09:29 | what respect means for me and gave them an opportunity
09:33 | to do the same . So I think that's what
09:35 | elicited this kind of honest process in which they identified
09:40 | certain aspects of themselves and how they can bring respect
09:45 | into the classroom . I am going to give you
09:49 | an opportunity to make some promises of ways in which
09:56 | you can show respect in this classroom . What are
10:01 | five different ways you promise to show respect in this
10:08 | classroom ? I really want you guys to think about
10:18 | these answers who would like to participate . What is
10:24 | one promise that you'd like to share ? Yeah .
10:28 | I promise not to write on the books and desks
10:30 | . Thank you . I promise to not right on
10:32 | the books or desks . Thank you for respecting the
10:35 | property . Yes . I promise to accept No for
10:38 | an answer . Nice . I promise to accept no
10:41 | for an answer . Good . I love how many
10:44 | of you are participating right now . Excellent . So
10:47 | in a classroom it's all about how you frame your
10:50 | expectations positively . So there's a 5-1 ratio you want
10:54 | always want to make sure that um the amount of
10:57 | times that you are positively framing your expectations are way
11:01 | more than how many times you address a negative behavior
11:06 | . You guys are doing a great job of following
11:09 | instructions and focusing and staying on task . Thank you
11:13 | . Not only did you guys put your hands up
11:15 | , but every single one of you were looking at
11:17 | me with your hands up like this . Perfect .
11:21 | That's excellent . That's what we want to do .
11:23 | I like how I didn't even say this yet ,
11:26 | but when everyone was sharing the whole entire class was
11:30 | looking at that person , excellent . Thank you for
11:33 | giving that person your attention . So a lot of
11:36 | my students , what they say about me is I'm
11:39 | strict , but in a nice way and I like
11:41 | that because it lets me know that okay , I
11:43 | have structure in my classroom and yes , I am
11:45 | strict . I have rules and procedures , but they
11:48 | know that I care about them and I'm nice about
11:51 | it and I'm friendly . So I actually like foreign
11:55 | students say I'm strict , but in a nice way
11:58 | we're gonna try entering the classroom one more time .
12:01 | This time I want you to find your seats in
12:03 | the quicker and um remain quiet as you were the
12:08 | first , the first year . Yeah . |
