00:00 clocks are amazing , wonderful inventions . Humans have used
00:05 clocks for a really long time in the ancient world
00:08 . A common type of clock was the sun dial
00:11 . That's right . The sun dial . Sun dials
00:14 are very accurate but are not used often today .
00:18 Have you ever asked what time it is ? And
00:20 someone checks their sun dial ? Yeah , that isn't
00:25 real common Today . Most clocks are digital clocks .
00:30 Digital clocks are really simple to use . They simply
00:33 show the digits for the hour and minutes . So
00:37 here we have a digital clock . Here on the
00:40 left , we see the hour . It is seven
00:42 on the right , we see the minutes . 10
00:46 . So what time is it according to this clock
00:50 ? Mm . Yeah , it is 7 10 ,
00:54 10 minutes past seven o'clock . What about this clock
00:57 ? Here is another digital clock . What time is
01:00 it according to this clock ? Yes , it is
01:06 10 o'clock on the left . We see the hour
01:09 which is 10 and on the right we see the
01:11 minutes which are just zeros . So it is exactly
01:16 10 o'clock Now . Digital clocks are not the only
01:20 way we can see what time it is . Have
01:22 you ever seen a clock like this before ? Yeah
01:27 . This is called an analog clock . It is
01:30 a different way to display time in this video .
01:34 We are going to learn how to read analog clocks
01:37 which will be super awesome because there are analog clocks
01:42 all around us that want to be read . They
01:44 want to show us the time . So to start
01:48 , we are going to learn some fun things about
01:51 the analog clock . The front is called the face
01:55 of the clock or the dial . Just like you
01:58 have a face . An analog clock has a face
02:01 that's right . The face includes the numbers , the
02:04 parts that spin and all the markings on the clock
02:07 . The face sometimes called the dial has two main
02:11 parts that point to the numbers and spin around .
02:15 They are called hands . Isn't that interesting . The
02:19 shorter hand is the hour hand . It shows us
02:22 what hour it is . The hour hand is short
02:25 . The longer hand is the minute hand , it
02:28 points to the minutes . It's silly , even though
02:31 an hour is longer than a minute . The hour
02:33 hand is shorter . The hour hand is the shorthand
02:37 and the minute hand is the longhand . So just
02:41 like you analog clocks have a face and usually have
02:45 two hands . The short hand points to the hour
02:48 . The long hand points to the minutes . Let's
02:54 go back to our analog clock and see if we
02:57 can figure out what time it is showing . Just
03:00 like we do with the digital clock . Let's look
03:03 at the hour hand the shorthand first . What number
03:06 is it pointing at ? Yes , at the No
03:12 . three . Great . So it is the third
03:15 hour , it is three something . Now . We
03:18 just have to read the minutes . The minute hand
03:21 is the long hand . But how do we read
03:23 the minutes ? It only goes up to 12 .
03:26 And those big numbers are what we use for the
03:28 hours . What do we do , Mr Whiskers ?
03:31 We're recording what , you know how to read the
03:35 minutes on an analog clock . I didn't even know
03:37 you knew how to tell time . You're a cat
03:40 . You have a trick . Well , we should
03:43 hear the trick . It's important for us to learn
03:45 how to do this . Okay , an analog trick
03:48 with Mr Whiskers . It's a little crazy . But
03:51 that's all right . So what's the trick ? Oh
03:55 okay . So we need to count by fives to
03:58 find out the minutes . That's a wonderful trick .
04:01 That's amazing . You see all of those little lines
04:04 in between the numbers on the face of the clock
04:07 represent one minute to find out the minutes . We
04:11 just have to count by fives around the clock .
04:14 Starting at the 12 . The 12 is like the
04:17 starting line when the minute hand is at the 12
04:20 . That means zero minutes . Then the one is
04:23 52 is 10 , then 15 2025 30 35 40
04:31 45 50 55 . And then back to zero .
04:37 All we have to do is count by fives .
04:42 Okay , so we're ready to figure out what time
04:44 this is . Okay , so we already know what
04:47 the hour is . The hour is three ? Yes
04:52 . Okay so we write three . Now we have
04:55 to figure out the minutes and the minute hand is
04:57 pointing at the 12 which means what ? How many
05:01 minutes ? Zero . Yeah . And with minutes we
05:04 always write two digits . So we'll right two zeros
05:09 . What is this time ? Yeah . 3:00 .
05:14 Great job . Okay let's try this one . What
05:19 time does this clock say ? Where's the hour hand
05:24 ? Yeah . On the five and where's the minute
05:27 hand , Yep . At the 12 ? So you
05:31 know there are zeros at the end of that .
05:32 What time is it ? Yes , it's five o'clock
05:37 . Great job . Alright , Let's try this one
05:41 . Okay , both hands are pointing at which number
05:46 ? Yeah . 12 . What time is this ?
05:50 Mhm . Yes . 12:00 . Great job notice .
05:56 If the minute hand is pointing at the 12 ,
05:59 you always say oclock . So this is 12 o'clock
06:04 just like before we had three o'clock and five o'clock
06:08 . This is 12 o'clock . Terrific . Now we
06:12 are going to change things up , just remember our
06:15 trick count by fives . Okay , let's figure out
06:18 what time this clock is showing us first . Let's
06:21 look at the hour hand . Wait , it isn't
06:24 directly pointing at a number it is between the two
06:28 and the three . No worries . When the hour
06:31 hand is between two numbers , the hour is the
06:34 earlier number . So the hour is to where is
06:38 the minute hand pointing ? That's right at the number
06:43 six . We are going to use Mr Whiskers trick
06:46 And count by fives . We start at the 12
06:50 which is zero then we count 5 . 10 15
06:55 2025 30 . So how many minutes is this showing
07:01 ? Mhm . 30 . That's right . So what
07:04 time is the clock showing ? 2.30 ? You got
07:09 it ? This one looks like fun . What time
07:15 is it according to this clock first . Let's look
07:18 at the hour hand . The hour hand is between
07:22 numbers . Again , it is Between which numbers ?
07:26 Yes . Eight and nine . Remember when the hour
07:31 hand is between two numbers ? The hour is the
07:34 earlier number . So the hour is eight . Where
07:38 is the minute hand pointing ? That's right at the
07:43 number three we are going to use Mr Whiskers trick
07:47 and count by fives . We started the 12 which
07:51 is zero then we count 5 . 10 15 .
07:55 So how many minutes is this showing ? 15 ?
08:01 Yeah . So what time is the clock showing ?
08:05 8 15 ? You got it ? How about this
08:12 1 ? What time is it according to this clock
08:16 first . Let's look at the hour hand . The
08:19 hour hand is between numbers again it is between which
08:23 numbers ? Yes . 11 and 12 . Remember when
08:28 the hour hand is between two numbers ? The hour
08:32 is the earlier number . So the hour is what
08:37 ? 11 ? You are right okay so where is
08:41 the minute hand pointing , yep . At the number
08:46 nine we are going to use Mr Whiskers trick and
08:50 count by fives . We start with 12 which is
08:54 zero then we count 5 10 15 2025 30 35
09:00 40 45 . So how many minutes is this showing
09:07 ? 45 ? You got it ? So what time
09:10 is this clock showing ? 11 45 ? Yes .
09:16 Great job . We looked at examples of when the
09:22 hour hand isn't pointing directly at a number on the
09:26 face of a clock . You know sometimes the minute
09:29 hand isn't pointing directly at a number . Mhm .
09:34 Look at this example , the hour hand is between
09:37 which two numbers ? Yes seven and 8 . Which
09:42 number is the hour , yep . Seven . The
09:47 hour is always the earlier number on the clock when
09:50 it is between two numbers . Now the minute hand
09:54 is near the eight but notice it went past the
09:58 eight by two to figure out the minutes we will
10:01 count by fives just like before and then add to
10:05 at the end the 12 05 10 15 2025 30
10:12 35 40 . Then you just add 40 plus two
10:18 . You got to add to what is 40 plus
10:21 two . Mm . Yeah , 42 . So the
10:26 time is 7:42 . Wonderful job . That's great .
10:31 Yeah . Let's look at one last analog clock .
10:37 Just looking at this clock . What is the hour
10:40 ? Mhm . Yes . 12 because 12 is the
10:44 earlier our on the clock . How about the minutes
10:49 ? Use the count by fives trick . And notice
10:53 the minute hand is one minute after the four ,
10:57 You'll need to add one minute mm . All right
11:02 , 21 . So the time is 12 21 .
11:07 Let's check the minutes to be sure . 5 10
11:11 15 20 . Then at one which is 21 .
11:15 You have done a great job . Before we conclude
11:20 this video , we want to share to more things
11:22 . What's with the swans ? Were sharing two things
11:26 about analog clocks . We aren't sharing two swans .
11:30 Okay , so first analog clocks sometimes use roman numerals
11:35 instead of regular numbers , fancy clocks and clock towers
11:39 usually use roman numerals . If you need help with
11:42 roman numerals , we do have a video about that
11:45 . The second thing is that you may see a
11:48 thin hand sometimes a different color than the hour and
11:52 minute hands . That shows the seconds . It isn't
11:55 always there and it doesn't help you tell the time
11:58 . It just shows how fast time is moving .
12:01 The second hand moves really fast to tell time .
12:05 We use the two main hands , the hour hand
12:08 and the minute hand . We learned that the front
12:14 of an analog clock is called the face or the
12:17 dial . The pointers on the face of the clock
12:20 are called hands . The short hand shows us the
12:23 hour If the hour hand is between two numbers ,
12:26 the hour is the earlier our on the clock .
12:31 Yeah , the long hand shows us the minutes to
12:34 find the minutes . We count by fives along the
12:37 face of the clock until we reach where the minute
12:40 hand is pointing . Sometimes we need to add a
12:44 few minutes because the minute hand isn't always pointing directly
12:48 at a number . It can take a lot of
12:52 practice , but we hope this video helped you learn
12:54 how to read analog clocks . Now you can read
12:58 the time no matter what type of clock it is
13:01 , unless if it is a sun dial . I
13:03 mean really , really special thanks to our patrons who
13:08 make videos like this video on analog clocks possible .
