00:0-1 Hello . My name is Emma . And in today's
00:01 video we are going to teach you 10 verbs that
00:05 you can use when you're talking about work and jobs
00:09 . Okay . And careers . So these are 10
00:11 very important verbs that you will hear a lot in
00:14 movies and on TV shows and maybe even your professional
00:19 life . Okay , so let's get started . So
00:24 for each of these verbs I'm going to tell you
00:26 what they mean . I'm going to tell you the
00:28 grammar of the verb because that's also very important .
00:32 And I am going to talk about pronunciation . So
00:35 how do we say it ? And spelling each of
00:39 these parts ? So beaning grammar , pronunciation and spelling
00:43 , not smelling , spelling can really help you remember
00:47 these verbs better . Okay so my first verb to
00:52 be hired . What does it mean to be hired
00:57 ? Well this is a very good meaning . This
00:59 is something very exciting when you are hired . It
01:03 means you get a job . Okay . So it's
01:05 you've given your resume to accompany , you've done the
01:09 interview and guess what you are hired ? Okay .
01:13 That means you've gotten the job well done . So
01:16 I've drawn a smiley face here because this is very
01:18 exciting . So let's look at an example of the
01:23 verb hired a long time ago when I was a
01:27 lot younger , I was hired by blockbuster . Okay
01:34 so a company , I don't know if it still
01:36 exists but um I was hired by blockbuster . Okay
01:42 so you'll notice something about this verb we have here
01:45 the subject which is I . M . A .
01:49 And we have the verb hired . But you might
01:52 also notice this word was I was hired . This
01:57 means that this verb is in what's called the passive
02:00 tense . Okay so when we're talking about maybe our
02:04 friends or our family or people we know who got
02:07 a job . We will say my friend was hired
02:13 by in the company or um You know uh I
02:19 was hired by this company . Okay now this is
02:23 a bit different . Um So this is in the
02:25 passive and it's very important to remember the word was
02:29 we have here Our our same verb hired but in
02:33 this case it's in the active 10s . And if
02:36 you don't know what I mean by passive or active
02:38 , that's okay because we have a video on that
02:41 . Which will help explain that . But the point
02:44 here is that usually when you use hired you usually
02:48 have a was um in front of it or we're
02:52 depending on if you're saying he she we they we
02:56 usually have it like this if you're talking about a
03:00 company or the boss of a company , a manager
03:04 . Um and we're talking about their role and that
03:08 they want to employ someone . In this case we
03:12 would use the active which is this sentence . The
03:15 manager hired , john okay . And so you'll notice
03:19 here , I can also say blockbuster hired me .
03:24 Um You know if I was a famous actress I
03:28 could say Universal Studios hired me for their next movie
03:32 . Not true but um just an example . So
03:36 the key here is there's no was or were in
03:39 the active form . But for you you will probably
03:43 be mainly using the first form , the passive form
03:47 . Okay . And if you have questions about this
03:49 , you can watch our videos on passive and active
03:51 tenses . So I was hired by blockbuster . How
03:55 do I pronounce this word ? Well the first thing
03:58 is it is two syllables . So we say hi
04:02 or okay , so I want you to repeat after
04:04 me . Hi Earth . Okay . And so it's
04:08 kind of like the word high . Uh huh .
04:12 And in terms of the spelling , uh one of
04:15 the great things with verbs that have to do with
04:17 jobs is a lot of them are spelt very similarly
04:21 , they have very close spellings . So for example
04:23 , we have your higher . There's another job verb
04:27 that we'll be talking about soon . That does not
04:30 mean the same thing , but it also has I
04:32 . R . E . Can you guess what that
04:33 word is ? Fire ? Okay . Fire rhymes with
04:37 higher . They both have similar spelling spellings and we
04:41 also have another word retire . Okay , So I
04:44 . R . E . You'll see are very common
04:46 with job verbs . All right , so let's look
04:48 at another verb to earn . Okay , this is
04:53 a great verb to earn , It means to make
04:56 money . Okay , so you've gotten the job you
04:58 have been hired . So what happens now ? The
05:02 best part you start to make money ? You earn
05:05 money . Okay . So I've drawn a happy face
05:08 here because this is also a very good thing about
05:10 jobs . So here are some examples of using this
05:15 verb in a sentence . I have my friend Jack
05:18 here or jake . I'm sorry not Jack jake earns
05:23 . Well this means this means jake makes a lot
05:27 of money . Mhm . Now compare this to Ben
05:31 then doesn't earn a lot , so that means then
05:36 does not make a lot of money . So in
05:39 terms of the pronunciation of this word , I know
05:42 a lot of students want to pronounce E . A
05:45 . As E , which usually is right but in
05:48 this case um we don't pronounce this as Aaron ,
05:52 we pronounce this as earn so like this urn and
05:57 if you can't really remember just think of the word
05:59 learn because we have the word earn in it .
06:03 Okay . Um so that should help you with pronunciation
06:07 . So I want you to say it with me
06:09 earn . Okay great . So now we have another
06:13 verb that means the same thing as earn and that
06:17 is to get or to be paid . Okay .
06:21 So when we're talking about pay , we're talking again
06:25 about making money . So again , I have a
06:27 smiley face because this is one of the best parts
06:29 about working is getting paid . I get paid every
06:34 week . This means I make money every week .
06:38 Sue gets paid every two weeks . Um You might
06:42 also talk about how well somebody gets paid . Just
06:46 like earn , jake earns well jake gets paid well
06:51 . Okay . Um Ben doesn't earn a lot .
06:54 Ben doesn't get paid a lot , so they have
06:58 the same meaning . Um So in this case like
07:01 we've talked about the passive before with up here I
07:05 get paid or I am paid . This is a
07:08 passive sentence . Now if you don't know what that
07:10 means , don't worry . Okay , um you can
07:13 watch the video again on that . But the main
07:15 thing is when we're talking about ourselves and how much
07:18 money we're making , we usually use this , I
07:21 get paid a lot of money . I get paid
07:25 , you know , a little money . Okay .
07:29 We can also talk about companies . So when I
07:31 worked at blockbuster , um I was working , you
07:36 know the front desk . So the company at that
07:40 time paid well . Okay , the company pays well
07:43 . The company doesn't pay well . So in this
07:46 case when we're talking about the company , we're using
07:48 the active voice . Okay , So we're not using
07:52 the word get here , we're just using the word
07:54 pay . And you'll notice that the spelling of the
07:56 verbs , even though it's the same verb , they're
07:59 spelled differently . Okay , so in terms of pronunciation
08:04 paid , it runs with day and we have paid
08:10 . Okay . So this is not pronounced like said
08:12 , it looks like said , but it's not pronounced
08:14 like that . It's pronounced paid pay and paid when
08:19 we're talking about it in the passive voice or in
08:22 the past tense . All right now , let's look
08:24 at some more verbs that have to do with jobs
08:27 . Okay , so , so far you have been
08:28 hired , um you have earned lots of money ,
08:32 you've been paid really well by your company . So
08:35 what happens next ? Well , the next verb we're
08:38 going to talk about tells you just that to be
08:41 promoted . Okay . So when you are promoted ,
08:45 there's a happy face here . This is a very
08:46 good thing to be promoted . This means if this
08:49 is you down here , you're moving up and up
08:53 and up in the company . So you're going from
08:55 your position to a higher position . Okay . So
08:59 imagine if I was a police officer and I was
09:05 great at my job , I worked there for some
09:07 years and suddenly um this might be a bit of
09:10 a jump but suddenly I was promoted to Chief of
09:14 Police . It means I've moved from my position to
09:17 a higher position . Okay ? And this new position
09:20 , I'm going to earn more money probably . So
09:25 I was promoted to Chief of Police , I was
09:28 promoted to principal , I was promoted to head teacher
09:32 . Okay , I was promoted to professor . So
09:35 these are all examples of moving up to a higher
09:38 job . Um And so again like we were talking
09:42 about with some of those other verbs like hired ,
09:45 we have here the word was okay and then we
09:49 have promoted with E . D . It's the past
09:51 participle of promote this means this is a passive sentence
09:56 because the promotion is happening to us . Okay So
10:01 we're using the passive voice here and we're saying I
10:04 was promoted to Chief of Police . So if you
10:08 have a job and you've moved up in the job
10:11 you can say I was promoted to blank . Or
10:14 maybe you know a friend or your family when they
10:17 move up at work , you can say they were
10:20 promoted . She was promoted , he was promoted .
10:24 We were promoted . Okay . And then here is
10:27 the new job title . Um Now let's look at
10:32 the active voice . The company promoted me . So
10:37 the company is doing this . They're helping me move
10:40 up . Okay . So I could say the manager
10:43 promoted me . My boss promoted me . And so
10:46 in this case we don't have the word was or
10:49 where we just have the verb promoted because this is
10:52 the active voice . So I was promoted to chief
10:55 of police . Um The company promoted me . Okay
11:00 so now let's look at pronunciation . Pro is kind
11:04 of like progress . Okay . That's what promote reminds
11:07 me of . It reminds me of progress and it
11:09 has the same um prefects to it . Pro moat
11:14 . Okay so this is two syllables promote . And
11:18 when we say it we put the stress or we
11:21 say the second part louder and longer . I was
11:24 promoted promote . Okay so now let's look at some
11:29 more verbs . Okay now we have the opposite of
11:33 promoted , which as you can see a sad face
11:37 here . This is to be demoted demoted . So
11:43 what does it mean to be demoted ? Well here
11:47 we're going up up up in the company whereas when
11:49 we're demoted we're going down to a lower job .
11:53 Okay so this is not a good thing . We're
11:56 going from our high position to a lower position .
11:59 Okay . So for example , maybe I made a
12:03 mistake at the company . Okay . Maybe I was
12:05 chief of Police for a day and then I made
12:09 some big mistakes . And because of those big mistakes
12:13 , I was demoted . So I went down maybe
12:17 back to my old job or maybe even lower .
12:21 Okay , so demoted is not a good thing .
12:24 And again , we have this um in the passive
12:27 voice , I was demoted . He was demoted .
12:31 She was demoted . We were demoted . They were
12:35 demoted . Okay . Now , if the company like
12:41 here , if the company is doing the demotion ,
12:44 we would say the company demoted me . Okay ,
12:48 so I was demoted . The company demoted me .
12:53 So very similar to promoted except opposite meanings . Mhm
12:58 . And again , this is two syllables demote and
13:02 the stresses on the second syllable I was demoted the
13:07 remote . The company demoted me . Okay , so
13:14 we have a positive thing . We have a sad
13:17 thing . What's next ? Okay . This is a
13:21 scary thing to be fired . All right . This
13:26 is probably the job . Um The job herb ,
13:28 you're going to hear the most . Hopefully it doesn't
13:31 happen to you , but we hear it a lot
13:33 in movies and T . V . I hope it
13:34 doesn't happen to you to be fired . So I've
13:38 drawn here a very angry person because usually when you
13:42 are fired you are not happy . It means you
13:45 lose your job . Um And it's usually because the
13:51 company thinks you did something wrong . Okay . So
13:55 maybe you were fired because you stole a lot of
13:57 money from the company . Maybe you were fired because
14:01 um you know , you made a lot of mistakes
14:04 on the job . Maybe you were fired because you
14:07 know , your boss didn't like you and maybe it
14:08 wasn't fair . Okay so to be fired is that
14:12 you lose your job in a very negative way For
14:16 a reason Jim was fired . He stole money from
14:21 his company just an example . Um And again we
14:27 have here it's in the passive form so that means
14:30 we have the be verb or was and fired with
14:33 the D . Or the past participle . Um So
14:36 jim was fired . Um I was fired . He
14:40 was fired . She was fired . It means um
14:44 lose your job . So now now let's talk about
14:50 the active voice so we can talk about our boss
14:53 . My boss fired me . The boss fired jim
14:59 . So because the boss is the one doing the
15:02 actual saying you're fired . If you think about donald
15:04 trump from his tv show , he used to always
15:06 say you're fired . The boss fired jim . Okay
15:11 so this is not in the passive tense , this
15:13 is in the active voice . This one is in
15:15 the passive voice and hopefully you know you don't get
15:19 fired so hopefully you won't have to use this .
15:21 But um if you ever do you can say I
15:24 was fired . Okay . So in terms of pronunciation
15:29 Fire It's two syllables fire and it runs with higher
15:34 fire . Okay . And just like the verb we
15:38 looked at before higher , it has the same I
15:41 . R . E . Spelling and in this case
15:44 we just have the F . For fire . All
15:46 right now let's look at some more verbs that have
15:48 to do with jobs . Okay so we've talked about
15:51 getting fired or when people are fired . So let's
15:55 look at some other reasons why we might leave our
15:59 company or our job . So we have the next
16:02 verb to be laid off . So this is not
16:05 the same thing as being fired when we're talking about
16:09 being fired , we're usually talking about um your company
16:14 thinks you made a mistake or your boss didn't like
16:17 you , or there's some reason um why you're getting
16:21 fired . And usually it's a negative or a bad
16:24 reason when you get laid off , a lot of
16:28 the times you lose your job , but you know
16:33 , you didn't make a mistake or you didn't do
16:36 anything wrong . It could be because the company is
16:40 closing a factory , maybe the company has too many
16:44 people working there , and so um you know ,
16:47 they're getting rid of some jobs , but it's not
16:50 because you made a mistake , okay , it's something
16:53 to do with the company needs less workers . So
16:58 it's still a sad thing though . I put a
17:00 sad face um with fired , I put an angry
17:03 phase because usually you're really angry when you're fired um
17:06 when you're laid off , a lot of people feel
17:09 really sad . Here's an example of the verb lay
17:14 off in the sentence . I was laid off because
17:19 the factory is closing or I was laid off because
17:23 my office um needs less people . Okay so again
17:27 we have this in the passive voice meaning we have
17:30 the be verb or was and then we have lay
17:34 in the past participle laid . I was laid off
17:39 . Okay . Um people were laid off at my
17:43 company because we had and we didn't have enough money
17:47 to pay them . Yeah . So here I said
17:51 it's in the passive form . We also have uh
17:54 in the active form when the company is doing um
17:58 the action the company laid off 20 workers . I
18:03 was laid off . The company laid off . So
18:06 you'll notice here we have the word was because it's
18:08 passive and here we don't because it's active voice .
18:13 So in terms of pronunciation Les rhymes with pay .
18:17 So again we see a connection with job vocabulary lay
18:21 pay and just like we had laid off where we
18:26 spell it . P . A . I . D
18:29 . I'm sorry paid off . We have laid off
18:32 . So it's the same spelling A . I .
18:34 D . Um Now compare this to when we're talking
18:38 about a company . Uh We have this maybe in
18:41 a different form where we have L . A .
18:44 Y . S . So be careful here because a
18:47 lot of people make spelling mistakes when they spell laid
18:50 off . This is how we spell the past participle
18:53 . Okay so be careful when you're spelling this word
18:55 because it's tricky . Even for regular english speakers lay
18:59 and laid is one of those really confusing things for
19:03 spelling . Okay so now let's look at some other
19:06 verbs we have here to quit and also to resign
19:12 . So these mean almost the same thing when we
19:15 quit , it means we don't want the job anymore
19:19 , so we tell our boss you know um I
19:22 quit , I'm leaving . It means you don't want
19:24 the job , you're going to find a new job
19:27 or maybe you already have found a new job .
19:30 The word quit is a bit informal though . Okay
19:33 so I wouldn't if I was quitting my job I
19:37 tell my friends yes you know I quit today but
19:39 I wouldn't write to the company I quit . I
19:43 would use the word resign because this is the professional
19:46 word . So these have the same meaning but quit
19:50 is more informal . It's how we talk to our
19:53 friends in conversation , whereas resign is what we would
19:56 write to our bosses . I resigned from my position
20:01 . So here is an example . She quit because
20:05 she got a better job lucky her . Um He
20:09 resigned because he found a new job or he resigned
20:13 because he didn't like the company . He didn't like
20:17 his boss . Okay so this is different from being
20:19 fired because it's your choice . When you quit you
20:23 make the decision it's your choice . Um And that's
20:26 why you'll notice it's not in the passive form .
20:29 We don't have she was quit . No this is
20:31 always active . I quit . You quit , he
20:34 quits , she quits . Um In terms of the
20:39 word quit . Um This is one of those irregular
20:43 verbs in english Where we don't use it with E
20:46 . D . So if you're talking about the past
20:48 um you know 20 years ago I quit my job
20:52 we never say quitted . Right ? Okay . What
20:57 we say is quit for the present as well as
21:01 for the past tense . This is different from resigned
21:05 , resigned in the present we can say resign and
21:08 in the past you'll notice it's a regular edie verb
21:11 resigned . So in terms of pronunciation , let's just
21:16 practice this quickly . A lot of people they don't
21:19 know how to pronounce this word because usually cute .
21:22 It's it's not really a letter that comes up a
21:24 lot in english . So let's say this word together
21:27 , quit quick . Okay and in terms of the
21:32 sound resigned you'll notice it's two syllables resign and even
21:39 though we have an S . Here , it's pronounced
21:40 like a zed resign . I resigned from my company
21:46 today . Okay so be aware of those pronunciation differences
21:52 . Okay . The last verb you are going to
21:55 learn today from this lesson is a really happy verb
21:59 . We're ending on a very happy note and that
22:02 is to retire . So what does it mean to
22:06 retire ? Well when we retire from our job it
22:10 means we're leaving work , but it's not because we
22:15 don't like the job or because a better job comes
22:18 along . It means we're finished work forever . We
22:22 don't need to do any more work . Were older
22:25 , you know , depending on your country , there's
22:27 different ages to retire in some countries . Maybe it's
22:30 60 , maybe 70 , maybe 65 . Okay ,
22:34 so when we're older we retire and that means we're
22:37 finished work , we're finished for good . So for
22:42 example , my father , When he retired , my
22:45 father retired at 65 . Okay . Um I want
22:51 to retire at 40 . I don't think it will
22:55 happen . Um I think I will retire probably at
22:58 70 because actually you know , I love teaching ,
23:00 so maybe we'll say 70 . I want to retire
23:04 at 70 . Um Okay so let's look at the
23:10 spelling and pronunciation of this word now , retire .
23:14 So we have three syllables re thai earth . And
23:20 then when we say quickly retire . Okay so you'll
23:24 notice retired . I say tie a little bit louder
23:28 and longer retire . Okay so be careful with the
23:32 stress where you put it . We don't say retire
23:35 . We say retire , retire and you'll notice um
23:41 like hire and fire . We have the I .
23:44 R . E . Spelling again . Higher . Okay
23:48 so be careful with the spelling . Um I know
23:51 a lot of students . The spelling is the thing
23:53 they don't really think about , but it actually is
23:55 really important because when you can spell something it helps
23:59 you to remember it better . Okay so practice your
24:01 spelling , practice spelling . These words um practice using
24:05 them in sentences and in conversation . Um Again just
24:09 uh you know these words do come up a lot
24:13 . We hear about people being fired , people ,
24:17 quitting people being retired people being hired . And so
24:20 these are very important verbs , especially if you're looking
24:25 for a job or you know people who are working
24:27 . Um we use these a lot . So I
24:31 wanted to thank you for watching this video . Um
