00:01 Yeah . Hi , readers . Since we've been home
00:08 a lot lately , I have been reading more and
00:10 more nonfiction articles , either in the newspaper or magazines
00:15 , and I've been really thinking about what I feel
00:19 and then trying to share it with my family ,
00:21 since my family is in the house a lot as
00:23 well . And when I do read these articles ,
00:28 I have a process of summarizing asking myself my opinion
00:34 and then sharing it . So there are different reasons
00:36 why we summarize . And today we're going to talk
00:38 about one of those reasons . So one of the
00:41 reasons we do summarize is so that we understand what
00:45 we've read . We can give our opinion about it
00:48 , and then we can talk with others about it
00:51 . So let me show you my process , and
00:53 then later you can try that with your non fiction
00:57 piece that you're reading . So the first thing I
01:00 always do is read the text . Then , after
01:04 that , I asked myself what is most important about
01:09 the information that I just read ? I'm going to
01:12 use that most important information to summarize . I don't
01:16 need all of the extra stuff . I need the
01:18 important stuff so Once I know the important stuff ,
01:22 I am going to summarize . I'm gonna say the
01:25 important stuff either in my head or to somebody in
01:29 a concise way . That means it's going to be
01:31 short and to the point . Once I've done that
01:34 , then I'm going to ask myself , What's my
01:37 opinion ? What do I believe about ? What I
01:40 just read and then I can share it with others
01:43 . So let me show you how I did this
01:47 . So I picked this article . It's called The
01:49 Truth About Binge watching Why we love it . Why
01:53 we must stop . So with all these new platforms
01:57 like Netflix , we can sit down and watch 20
02:00 episodes of something right in a row . When I
02:03 was younger , we had to wait a week ,
02:05 and then we get the next episode . So this
02:08 article is about that idea of binge watching watching those
02:13 20 shows right in a row . Okay , so
02:17 I read the text and then I said , What's
02:21 the most important information in here ? The most important
02:25 information is that when we binge watch , we don't
02:28 have time to discuss it , and it gets our
02:32 brains really active . So then we have trouble sleeping
02:37 . That was my summary . Okay , those were
02:40 the important parts . And then I'm gonna say ,
02:44 What do I think about this ? So even though
02:48 the article is telling me it's bad , sometimes it's
02:51 really fun to hang out with my family and watch
02:53 a show all day long or in the evening .
02:58 Maybe when it's raining out , and I think that
03:04 the important thing is to have moderation . So if
03:08 I do that one day , then maybe the next
03:10 day we go out walking together , go for a
03:12 hike or ride our bikes and I always have the
03:17 TV turned off so that our brains can calm down
03:20 before bed . So my opinion is that it's not
03:24 all bad , but you have to be careful .
03:27 And then the next thing I'm gonna do is maybe
03:31 tonight at dinner I'm going to share my thoughts ,
03:34 my summary and then my thoughts with my family and
03:37 see what they have to think . So , readers
03:41 , the next time you pick up a nonfiction article
03:45 like a magazine , or maybe your scholastic or story
03:48 works or scope , read through it . Tell yourself
03:53 the important parts , and then ask yourself , What
03:57 do I believe ? And then try and share it
03:59 with someone in your house ? Yeah ,
