00:04 Hi , I'm Darcy from Lemos Learning . In this
00:07 video , I will discuss the importance of rhetoric for
00:10 students and demonstrate how you can utilize a vast collection
00:13 of public speeches on the learning platform to help students
00:17 become fluent readers . Simply put , rhetoric is the
00:21 study and art of writing and speaking well , being
00:24 persuasive and knowing how to compose successful writing and presentations
00:30 . It teaches students to think logically , discover wrong
00:34 or weak arguments , build a good case on a
00:36 controversial topic and overcome the all too common fear of
00:40 speaking in public so that they can deliver crisp and
00:44 well prepared speeches . At Loomis , we've curated a
00:48 vast free online database of some of the most significant
00:52 American political speeches of public addresses that can help students
00:56 practice rhetorical analysis coupled with our innovative Reading Fluency Analyzer
01:03 , which automatically analyzes the recorded audio and provides insightful
01:08 reports related to reading , accuracy , speed and expression
01:12 , helping students become fluent readers without further ado ,
01:17 let me show you how it works . Yeah ,
01:22 the speech that I have chosen today is called experts
01:24 from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Declaration of War . Part
01:29 one . Vice President , Mr Speaker , members of
01:37 the Senate of the House of Representatives Yesterday , December
01:44 7th , 1941 a date which will live in infamy
01:55 , United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked
02:01 by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan
02:08 . The United States was at peace with that nation
02:13 and at the solicitation of Japan , still in conversation
02:21 with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance
02:26 of peace in the Pacific . Indeed , one of
02:33 students can use the read along feature a teacher modeling
02:37 activity where you listen to the original speech while paying
02:40 attention to the highlighted text , improving fluency and expression
02:45 while you're on the page , you'll get an option
02:47 to record what you're reading , pause and stop the
02:49 recording as well . So I'm going to click record
02:53 and start reading . Mhm , Mr Vice President ,
02:57 Mr Speaker , members of the Senate and the House
03:01 of Representatives Yesterday December 7th , 1941 A date which
03:07 will live in infamy . The United States of America
03:11 was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces
03:15 of the Empire of Japan . The United States was
03:19 at peace with that nation and at the solicitation of
03:22 Japan was still in conversation with its government and its
03:25 emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific
03:29 . Indeed , one hour after Japanese air squadrons had
03:33 commenced bombing in the American island of LA , who
03:36 the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague
03:40 delivered to our secretary of state a formal reply to
03:43 a recent American message . And while this reply stated
03:47 that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations
03:52 , it contained no threat or hint of war or
03:55 of armed attack . It will be recorded that the
03:59 distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the
04:03 attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago
04:08 . During the intervening time , the Japanese government has
04:11 deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements
04:15 and expressions of hope for continued peace . The attack
04:20 yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to
04:23 American naval and military forces . I regret to tell
04:27 you that very many American lives have been lost .
04:31 In addition , American ships have been reported torpedoed on
04:35 the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu . Once
04:40 you click on stop , it'll take some time to
04:42 process your recording . Now you play your recording here
04:46 to listen to how you've read . The luminous reading
04:50 fluency analyzer automatically analyzes your audio and provides insightful reading
04:55 proficiency reports in a tabular view , such as the
04:59 total number of words in the passage , the total
05:02 number of words that you just read the number of
05:06 words read correctly . The number of words read incorrectly
05:11 . The number of words misreading most importantly , the
05:16 accuracy i e . The number of words read correctly
05:20 compared to the total number of words in the passage
05:25 as you come down , it shows you the transcribed
05:27 text . The correct incorrect and missing words are also
05:32 highlighted with different color codes to understand the reading gaps
05:35 . Better wait , We're not done yet . As
05:39 you click on the next tab , you'll view some
05:42 interesting graphs , the pitch graph and the intensity graph
05:46 . The pitch graph here will show the pitch variations
05:49 for specific words that are red , whereas the intensity
05:54 graph will show how each word is emphasized while reading
06:00 Yeah , to keep practicing , you can sign up
06:03 for a free account in just a few clicks .
