Back-to-School : Pandemic Style

Though restrictions have been lifted in many places in many ways, the school may not entirely be back to what we would consider normal operations. Staff members are still sanitizing like crazy and minimizing whole group activities to some extent. And, it will look different in different parts of the world. Some places may seem like they are back to pre-pandemic times, while in other areas, there may be more restrictions in hopes of keeping everyone healthy.

It is essential to know what plan is in place for the school district where you live. Go to the School District website or the website specific to your school, and find their re-entry plan for the year. Most districts will have it posted on their home page so parents can find it easily. Once you have seen and read the information, be sure to share it with your children, so they know what policies are in place.

Different Views

It is also important to remember that everyone will have different views and opinions. While masks may not be mandatory in all schools, some students may still choose to wear them.

Make sure you discuss your child’s comfort level with him and help make choices that support your morals and values. And remember that other parents will be doing the same with their children.

People may not all agree with the way others are handling it. Still, it is an individual choice as long as you are following the school’s current policy.

Be Supportive

School may look different for some students again this year. Some will be returning to in-person learning after a period away. Others have been in the classroom but under restrictions that have not typically been in place for the school.

Whatever the situation, it is vital for parents and teachers to support each learner. Some students may be experiencing anxiety about the changes this year. Make sure you are open to discussions and ready to listen to what your child needs.

Be Encouraging

Not everyone will be ready to return to how things were before the pandemic started, while others may be more than ready. Meet your child where he is and encourage him as best you can. It is essential to encourage your children without excessive reassurance. Do not tell them that everything is okay, especially if they are already feeling anxious. That would negate their feelings and have a negative effect as opposed to feeling reassuring.

Provide Clear Information

As in the past year, there may be many changes that could happen with little to no notice. Be sure to be open and communicate that possibility with your children.

Keep up-to-date with school, community, and government mandates so that you can inform your children if things are going to change for them.

Though this may be a difficult time for students, parents, and school staff, working together will ensure students get the support and encouragement needed.
