00:09 you know , some things just make sense together like
00:12 peanut butter and jelly , or burgers and fries or
00:15 water and dirt . Okay , let me explain that
00:18 last one . So we've already talked about how the
00:21 earth is divided into four spheres . That's the hydro
00:24 sphere , the geo sphere , the biosphere and the
00:26 atmosphere . Well today I want to focus on just
00:28 the first two of these spheres , the hydro sphere
00:31 , which includes all the water on the planet ,
00:33 and the geo sphere , which is simply the solid
00:36 earth . The hydro sphere and the geo sphere are
00:37 both equally important and different spheres of our planet .
00:40 But do they interact with each other ? And if
00:43 so , how ? Well , let's have a little
00:49 refresher on what exactly both of these spheres are separately
00:51 . Before we figure out how they interact together ,
00:54 you'll remember that Geo means ground . So what we
00:56 call the geo sphere includes all the rocks , minerals
00:59 , and ground found on and inside the earth .
01:01 This means every single pebble in the mountains , every
01:03 grain of sand in the desert , the entire ocean
01:06 floor and even the continents we live on our part
01:09 of the geo sphere . If it looks like solid
01:11 ground , it's part of the geo sphere . The
01:12 geo sphere includes the surface of the earth which we're
01:15 on now , but it even extends down to the
01:17 planet's core below us now the hydro sphere is also
01:20 found on the earth's surface and just below it too
01:23 . But the hydro sphere also extends up into the
01:25 atmosphere . Hydro means water . So the hydro spheres
01:28 made of all the water on earth , and I
01:30 do mean all of the water like ponds , rivers
01:34 , lakes , streams , oceans , glaciers on the
01:36 earth's surface , but also the moisture in the air
01:39 , like rain , hail and snow , that's all
01:42 part of the hydro sphere too . So the geo
01:43 sphere and the hydro sphere are separate systems . But
01:46 if we think of Earth as one giant system or
01:48 a group of systems working nicely together , then the
01:51 geo sphere and the hydro sphere are two parts that
01:53 work together to support life like you and me on
01:56 the planet . How do these two spheres work together
01:58 though ? Let's take a look at a model to
02:00 find out mm . Since the geo spheres the ground
02:06 . Let's start by laying down some of that and
02:08 let's throw in some mountains to now , we'll need
02:10 some water . Let's have a river winding through the
02:12 land about here . How about a lake ? And
02:15 just for the heck of it , let's throw some
02:16 rain over here . Okay , so you can see
02:18 in this model some elements of the geo sphere ,
02:20 right , That would be the ground in the mountains
02:23 . You can also see elements of the hydro sphere
02:25 , say hi to the river lake and raindrops .
02:27 But so what both spheres are there , but they're
02:31 not really doing anything together . Right , wrong .
02:34 Look closer , see that riverbed under the river .
02:36 Help at the bottom of the lake . Those things
02:38 are part of the geo sphere , their parts of
02:40 the geo sphere that are supporting and surrounding parts of
02:43 the hydro sphere and check out the rain over the
02:45 mountains . The rain , which is part of the
02:47 hydro sphere , is falling on and running down the
02:49 mountains , which is part of the geo sphere .
02:51 And this is just a really small example of the
02:53 two spheres interacting every day . All over the earth
02:56 . Water is moving over land forms from waterfalls flowing
02:59 down mountains to ocean waves crashing on sandy shores .
03:02 Water rest in lake beds or ocean floors in river
03:05 valleys and even in the soil in your backyard ,
03:08 all of which are part of the geo sphere .
03:10 So on a basic level , the geo sphere really
03:12 provides a home for the hydro sphere , which I
03:15 think it's kind of sweet , but that's just me
03:19 . Yeah , so now , you know a little
03:22 bit about how the geo sphere and the hydro sphere
03:25 are connected to find out how they can actually affect
03:28 and even change each other . Check out our next
03:30 episode .
