00:0-1 Hey parents , you might not know this , but
00:02 there's a pattern to each one of your child's math
00:05 homework assignments . Typically there's about three patterns for our
00:10 30 problem homework set and that's for older kids and
00:15 even less for younger kids . Once you spot those
00:19 patterns , the homework time will become so much easier
00:23 and smooth . You can actually bound over the math
00:27 homework assignments regardless of your own math level . Now
00:33 , if you haven't had a big struggle with math
00:36 homework assignment within your family so far , but there's
00:40 a concept called chunking , you can introduce to your
00:43 kids and help them to get ahead . In fact
00:46 chunking is so effective that at work the kids who
00:51 are older , like taking algebra two above say that
00:55 they can cut their homework time by half . Now
00:59 the earlier you can't learn this technique , the soner
01:03 and the smoother journey is going to be right now
01:06 if math is not your thing and homework has been
01:10 a donor for your family , don't worry , this
01:14 technique is so effective , you can still help your
01:18 child , even if you're not math with Hi ,
01:21 I'm dr phoenix panna performance coach at Dartmouth . This
01:25 channel is built for you and your child . We
01:29 build Children's confidence by using math and help them with
01:34 their math efficiency . So if you like this channel
01:37 , give it a thumbs up . All right back
01:39 to chongqing . So what is chunking chunking is a
01:43 process of assessing homework for patterns . If you can
01:47 help your child figure out what those patterns are before
01:51 they jump into the homework , they can divide the
01:54 homework in chunks and focus on each chunk at a
01:57 time . This one week homework easier for them and
02:02 the time is more enjoyable for them . And on
02:05 top of that you can teach you get to teach
02:09 your child a tool that seldom taught in school ,
02:13 how good is that ? Right , okay . So
02:16 how do you go about chunking a math homework ?
02:19 It's really simple . Not hard at all . Three
02:23 easy steps . Step number one . You want to
02:26 scan their homework in its entirety and try to fish
02:30 out of those two or three patterns . Step number
02:34 two , you want to solve those patterns , Practice
02:38 them , those two or three patterns over the textbook
02:43 and class notes . It's important . You don't jump
02:46 into the homework right away . You want to use
02:49 text book . It's important because by doing so ,
02:53 I'll give you the process and the correct answer ,
02:56 which neither of which you have . If you jump
02:59 into the homework assignments right away . Right , that
03:02 makes sense . Step number three , you want to
03:04 polish those . What does that mean ? You're going
03:07 to close the textbook , close the notes and see
03:11 if you can still drive everything without looking at it
03:14 . Now . If you didn't get the right answer
03:16 right away . Don't worry . Don't panic . Just
03:19 go back and repeat . Step number two . That's
03:21 all it takes . It takes a little practice a
03:24 well get easier . I promise you now I've covered
03:29 how to chunk the math homework assignments . You think
03:33 ready to jump and help your child . Not quite
03:37 let me cover one more thing that I work .
03:40 I say often gets parents in trouble when they're called
03:45 to help . You may or may not already experienced
03:49 this at home already . So does this sounds familiar
03:52 your child ? Cause you say I'm stock mom or
03:57 dad and um , you go over there , you
04:00 start to help then you got stuck . So you
04:04 asked to see their textbook or class notes trying to
04:08 figure it out . We're human , right ? I
04:10 haven't done the math flow while we're gonna figure it
04:13 out . But by then then quite make sense .
04:17 So you say , let's just google it or go
04:19 on youtube . Uh , you trying to learn as
04:23 you trying to teach your child , but by then
04:26 your child nags you with us . That's not how
04:30 my teacher wants it . You're trying to backpedal 30
04:36 minutes later . You're tired , your child is tired
04:41 and worse yet . Your whole family goes , why
04:45 is the dinner not on ? Uh , so what
04:50 went wrong ? It's really normal for us want to
04:54 jump in lending a helping hand to our kids .
04:59 But without taking a little pause , assess few things
05:04 and jumping in right away , trying to help .
05:07 It's as if we are jumping into the pool ,
05:10 trying to help them without knowing if we can swim
05:14 ourselves . Right ? We want to do that .
05:18 Okay . So it's really , really , really important
05:21 that you take a few moments to get in the
05:24 right space mindset to work your child because this day
05:29 and age , it's just so busy . We live
05:32 busy lives . Right . How do you go about
05:35 preparing yourself to help your child ? Great question .
05:39 Um , you want to start with assessing three factors
05:45 . It's going to save you so much heartaches and
05:48 headaches and heartaches and headaches . Okay , Three factors
05:53 . The first one is assessing yourself . I'm tired
05:57 . I'm not hungry . Did I have a tough
06:00 day already ? All those things can affect your ability
06:05 to help your Children or child . In this case
06:08 ? Factor # two . You want to assess your
06:11 kids ? Are they stressed out ? Do they have
06:14 a lot of busy day ? Are they tired ?
06:17 Do they have a fight with the BFFs ? Do
06:20 they have other projects they're working on ? Do they
06:23 have something planned that they really looking forward to really
06:27 focus on you ? I mean there's so many things
06:29 can affect their ability to listen to you . Factor
06:34 # three is the homework itself , you want to
06:38 scan assignments in its entirety ? You want to see
06:44 is it along , is it short ? Can I
06:47 expect myself to explain the concept to my grandma ?
06:51 That's a really good rule of thumb right now ,
06:54 after you assess those three factors , you want to
06:59 use that chunking technique to polish your own understanding before
07:04 you help your child and then you want to set
07:06 a timer to limit the amount of time and hold
07:10 on . You and your child will be working together
07:14 . Now you are ready to help . Now ,
07:17 I know by now you're thinking , oh , that
07:19 takes so long , Yes , it does take a
07:22 tiny little bit of extra effort . But I tell
07:25 you from work , I often say our good intention
07:29 of helping our kids , you know hard over here
07:33 often turns into a frustration , a struggle and math
07:37 war . It's really just not worth it without taking
07:41 this now by taking a little bit of extra time
07:44 , pause a little bit . We get to form
07:48 a stronger bond with our kids and participate in their
07:52 maths journey for longer and help them to have a
07:57 happier interaction with us over math . Now we all
08:02 know kids appreciate and love to work with happy parents
08:08 . Right , well that's it for this week .
08:11 Come back for more tips and insights . Leave a
08:15 comment below let us know is the tip working for
08:18 you ? What have you learned ? What your triumph
08:21 , share your comments with our George math community Until
08:26 next week happy parenting .
