00:46 | are learning about the Bill of Rights . You are
00:50 | going to learn what is the bill of Rights and
00:53 | how it makes a big impact on our lives every
00:57 | single day . Mm Let's start here . What is
01:03 | the bill of Rights ? That's a good question .
01:06 | What does that mean ? Well , the bill of
01:11 | rights is the name for the 1st 10 amendments to
01:15 | the United States Constitution . The bill of rights is
01:18 | a very special part of the constitution . The constitution
01:27 | is the highest law in the United States . The
01:30 | constitution has seven articles and 27 amendments . That's right
01:36 | . Seven articles and 27 amendments . The word amendment
01:44 | means a small change to a document . Can you
01:48 | say amendment ? Yeah . Amendment Amendment is a pretty
01:54 | cool word to say . There are 27 of these
01:57 | changes in the constitution . The 1st 10 amendments are
02:04 | very special . They clearly define so many of our
02:08 | freedoms and liberties . There were many people in Congress
02:15 | who wanted the constitution to guarantee our rights . Rights
02:19 | are privileges and freedoms that people deserve . They wanted
02:23 | to clearly define our freedoms so that the people of
02:27 | the United States wouldn't experience many of the things they
02:31 | fought to free themselves from during the american revolution .
02:37 | Yeah , We have mentioned that the 1st 10 amendments
02:41 | to the constitution are called the bill of rights .
02:44 | That is what this video is about . But we
02:46 | have to answer this question . What are right ?
02:51 | What our right ? What are rights , well rights
02:58 | or freedoms that people deserve ? These can be very
03:02 | basic . They are things that all people deserve to
03:05 | enjoy . Or they are protections that people deserve to
03:09 | have . So the Bill of Rights could have been
03:12 | called the Bill of Freedoms that people deserve . But
03:15 | you know , Bill of Rights sounds better , doesn't
03:18 | it ? You know , Here's the thing the 1st
03:23 | 10 amendments guarantee and protect our freedoms and limit the
03:27 | power that the government has to do certain things .
03:31 | They also make sure that the powers that are not
03:34 | given to the government in the constitution belong to the
03:38 | people as long as they are not against the law
03:42 | . Mhm . Let's learn them . Yeah , you
03:46 | can do it remember there are 10 amendments that make
03:49 | up the bill of rights . We are going to
03:51 | look at them one by one , and you are
03:53 | going to learn them . Mhm . Mhm . Here
03:57 | we go . The First Amendment . Are you ready
04:00 | ? No . You know , let us know .
04:03 | You know . Are you ready to learn the First
04:05 | Amendment ? It's the First one . This is cool
04:07 | . The First Amendment . Are you ready ? Yeah
04:11 | . The First Amendment is a big one . The
04:14 | First Amendment gives us freedom of speech , freedom to
04:17 | practice whatever religion we want , freedom of the press
04:21 | , freedom of assembly . That means the freedom to
04:24 | gather together and there are even more freedoms packed into
04:28 | the First Amendment . The First Amendment is a huge
04:31 | deal and it may be the most well known Amendment
04:34 | in the Bill of Rights . Yeah . All right
04:40 | now , it's time for the Second Amendment . The
04:42 | Second Amendment Amendment number two . The Second Amendment gives
04:49 | us the right to bear arms . We couldn't resist
04:52 | featuring Clarence here . Okay , but this isn't talking
04:56 | about actual bear arms . Okay , this amendment doesn't
04:59 | mean we all have the freedom to have the arms
05:02 | of a bear to bear arms means to carry a
05:05 | weapon . There are different perspectives on this amendment .
05:08 | Ask a parent or teacher about this amendment to learn
05:13 | more . All right . It's time for the 3rd
05:19 | Amendment Amendment Number three . So what is the Third
05:26 | Amendment , while the Third Amendment guarantees that the United
05:29 | States government cannot put troops and soldiers in people's homes
05:34 | without their consent . This was an important amendment when
05:38 | it was signed because during the Revolutionary War the british
05:42 | soldiers were allowed to stay in people's homes , even
05:45 | if they didn't want them there . This bothered many
05:48 | of the colonists because it wasn't fair . The Third
05:52 | Amendment made sure that being forced to house soldiers in
05:55 | your home would be a thing of the past .
05:59 | Yeah , Yeah , Yeah . Cool . Now it's
06:04 | time for the 4th Amendment Amendment Number four . Mhm
06:10 | . The Fourth Amendment is really cool . The Fourth
06:13 | Amendment says that the United States government cannot unfairly search
06:17 | or take property from people . For example , before
06:20 | a police officer can search someone's home , they have
06:23 | to have a warrant from a judge . A warrant
06:26 | means that the judge agrees that the police should search
06:29 | that person's house . This amendment protects your private property
06:34 | from getting searched or taken without good reason . All
06:42 | right . The 5th Amendment Amendment Number five . Mhm
06:47 | , mm . The Fifth Amendment gives people the right
06:51 | to stay silent in court if they decide they do
06:54 | not want to testify . There is a phrase that
06:57 | comes from this amendment . When people say I plead
07:00 | the fifth , they are saying I would rather not
07:02 | say if someone does not want to speak , they
07:05 | must not be forced to . The Fifth Amendment also
07:09 | gives people the right to fair treatment in court .
07:14 | Mm Okay , now it's time for the 6th amendment
07:23 | . The 6th Amendment guarantees that people have a speedy
07:27 | and public trial . The word speedy means fast .
07:31 | This means that the government should not put off the
07:34 | trial for no reason , but should bring the trial
07:37 | in a fair amount of time . Mhm . Mhm
07:44 | . The Sixth Amendment also gives people who are accused
07:48 | of a crime , the right to have a lawyer
07:50 | , a lawyer is someone who represents you in the
07:53 | court of law . If a person cannot get a
07:55 | lawyer on their own , the government has to provide
07:58 | one . The Sixth Amendment also guarantees people the right
08:02 | to know what crimes they are accused of and to
08:05 | speak face to face with the witnesses that are accusing
08:08 | them . Mm All right . It's time for the
08:13 | 7th amendment . Mhm . Yeah . The 7th Amendment
08:21 | guarantees that people have the right to be tried by
08:24 | a jury in civil cases . A jury is a
08:28 | group of regular citizens that decide a case instead of
08:32 | a judge in this picture of a courtroom . Where
08:35 | do you think the jury sets ? Do you have
08:38 | a guess ? Mm . Yeah . Mhm . Yeah
08:43 | . The jury would sit right here in a place
08:46 | in the courtroom called the jury box . All right
08:52 | . It's time for the 8th Amendment Amendment Number eight
09:00 | mm . The 8th Amendment ensures that the court's decisions
09:05 | are fair and just the 8th amendment protects people from
09:09 | punishments that are cruel and unusual punishments must be reasonable
09:14 | for the crime . The 8th amendment also protects people
09:20 | from excessive bail , bail is a payment people can
09:24 | make so that they can go home while they await
09:28 | trial . Mhm . Mhm . Alright , we're almost
09:34 | to the end the 9th Amendment Amendment Number nine .
09:41 | So what does the Ninth Amendment say ? Well ,
09:43 | the Ninth Amendment says that the Constitution does not list
09:47 | all of our rights . We have rights that aren't
09:50 | explicitly listed in the Constitution . For example , you
09:55 | have the right to build a snowman if you wanna
09:57 | build a snowman and play in the snow , you
09:59 | have the right to do that . But here's the
10:02 | thing , it doesn't say that in the constitution ,
10:04 | but just because it's not in the Constitution , it
10:07 | doesn't mean it's not a right of yours . You
10:08 | have these rights that aren't listed in the Constitution .
10:16 | Yeah . Okay , here is the last amendment in
10:20 | the bill of rights . The 10th amendment . Uh
10:24 | huh . Yeah , It's pretty awesome . The 10th
10:28 | amendment gives the power the United States government doesn't have
10:31 | to the states or to the people . Remember the
10:35 | United States government is a republic . It's a government
10:39 | for the people by the people . Hey , thanks
