00:0-1 Welcome to anywhere . Math . I'm Jeff , Jacobson
00:01 . And today we're gonna be comparing and ordering fractions
00:06 , decimals and percents . That's gonna start it .
00:27 Before we get to the first example , there's one
00:30 main rule , you need to know when you're comparing
00:32 or ordering fractions , decimals and percents . Uh You
00:36 may have heard the phrase , it's like comparing apples
00:39 and oranges . That's a very common phrase . And
00:41 basically what it means is it's hard to compare apples
00:44 to oranges . They're different . Right ? Same thing
00:47 with fractions , decimals and percents . We can't compare
00:50 them when they're all different . So the main rule
00:54 with comparing and ordering fractions , decimals and percents is
00:57 that you have to make them all . Either fractions
01:00 . All decimals or all percent . And then compare
01:05 them if they're not all the same , you can't
01:07 compare them . Okay , so with that in mind
01:10 let's get to our first example example one which is
01:13 greater . So we're comparing here we've got 3/20 compared
01:18 to 16% . Were comparing a fraction with a percent
01:21 . Now again the main rule , you got to
01:24 make them in this case both either fractions or both
01:28 percent most of the time . Uh Either one will
01:32 be okay . There's one main thing that you that
01:36 you should keep in mind though , when you're comparing
01:39 or ordering and you're having to change things into fractions
01:41 , decimals and percents . Uh decimals and percents are
01:46 fine , right there no big deal . If you
01:49 change everything to fractions , then sometimes you're gonna have
01:53 an extra step because in order to compare fractions ,
01:57 you also need common denominators . So when you do
02:01 that , sometimes you're going to have extra work to
02:04 be able to do that . So often times making
02:07 them all into fractions is usually maybe not the best
02:11 choice . So keep that in mind . Uh when
02:15 you're doing these problems , um So here we go
02:18 , part a 3/20 or 16% . So do we
02:22 want to make them both fractions or do you want
02:24 to make them both percent ? And if you remember
02:26 what I just said in my opinion , I think
02:29 it's going to be easier to make them both percent
02:32 . Well 3/20 uh Remember per cent means per 100
02:38 . So it be great if this denominator was 100
02:41 . Well that's easy for us to do 3/20 if
02:45 I wanted to become over 100 . Well to do
02:48 that , all I need to do is multiply the
02:51 denominator by five and if I do that to the
02:54 denominator to make an equivalent fraction , I need to
02:57 do that to the to the numerator . So times
03:00 five and I get 15 over 100 Which is the
03:05 same as 15% . So Which is greater 3 20th
03:12 which is the same as 15% or 16% . Well
03:16 , that's easy . 16% is greater than 50% .
03:21 So it's greater than three twenties . So see how
03:24 easy it becomes . Once when they're both the same
03:27 both percent . Then it's really easy to compare .
03:30 Let's try B 79% or 0.8 So in this case
03:36 we've got two options either would be fine . I
03:39 can make both of these percents fairly easy easily and
03:43 I could also make them both . Uh decimals quite
03:46 easily . So either one works . Uh You don't
03:49 have to worry about fractions so let's see how about
03:53 we do both . If I'm going to compare them
03:56 both as decimals . Well then I would need to
03:59 make this as a decimal and percent . Two decimals
04:03 is easy . I just move the decimal place twice
04:05 to the left . 12 , which would mean 0.79
04:11 . Okay , well 0.79 is greater than 0.08 ,
04:15 which means 79% is greater . Let's try the other
04:18 way . Let's make this 1% . So again I'll
04:21 have 79% and I'm changing 0.82% Decimals 2% . You
04:29 just go the other way . I move the decimal
04:31 point twice to the right , So 12 and it
04:36 becomes 8% . So same thing . Either way I
04:40 do it 79% is going to be greater than 0.08
04:46 , so that is greater . Okay , here's something
04:49 to try on your own . Example , two Ronaldo
05:00 messi and myself are practicing penalty kicks on the soccer
05:03 field . I make 72% of my shots . Ronaldo
05:07 makes 19 out of 25 of his and messy .
05:10 0.67 of his shots . Who made the fewest ?
05:15 Well , first let's underline are important information . So
05:18 I make uh 72% . Ronaldo 1925 . Messy .
05:26 So notice we've got a percent a fraction . And
05:30 the decimal ok , we're gonna have to compare all
05:33 all three of those to find out who made the
05:35 fewest . Um now to kind of be a little
05:39 be someone organized , I'm just gonna make a little
05:42 bit of a table . So here's me with 72%
05:48 . Then we've got Ronaldo whoops and we've got Ronaldo
05:56 At what was he 19 out of 25 . And
06:00 then we've got messy with zero point 67 Okay ,
06:09 now if you were going to use logic you would
06:11 probably say oh well it was probably Ronaldo who made
06:15 the fewest . Right ? Obviously it's not gonna be
06:16 me because I make all my penalty kicks . But
06:19 anyways so here we go , percent fraction decimal .
06:24 Again the rule , we got to make them all
06:26 the same , we can make them all percent ,
06:28 we can make them all fractions or we can make
06:30 them all decimals . Remember fractions are gonna be usually
06:34 the toughest . So let's skip that and let's think
06:37 , do we want to make them all percent or
06:39 all decimals ? And really it doesn't matter . Uh
06:42 for me , I'm going to say let's go with
06:44 percent . So that means this is good , 72%
06:50 is already percent . So great , 19/25 . Well
06:55 that's easy to make a percent because I can just
06:57 make that 25 into 100 for my denominator by multiplying
07:01 by four And do the same up here . And
07:06 let's see , 19 times four , That's 36 .
07:11 So 76 out of 100 , which means 76 out
07:15 of 176 per 100 , which means 76% . So
07:21 actually Ronaldo beat me in this situation uh and then
07:24 messy to change a decimal to a percent . It's
07:28 easy just move the decimal point twice to the right
07:32 to 12 and that becomes 67% . So the question
07:38 who made the fewest penalty kicks ? Well that was
07:43 okay Messi with 67% . Here's one more to try
07:48 on your own . Thank you so much for watching
07:57 , and if you like this video please subscribe .
08:05 Yeah .
