00:0-1 Good day . Welcome to Tech Math channel . Today
00:01 we're gonna have a look at a very important topic
00:03 in Math , which is called the order of operations
00:06 . Then on top of that , what we're going
00:07 to do from there is we're going to have a
00:09 look at a few of these click batey type viral
00:11 math problems that you surprise , surprise the order of
00:14 operations . Some ideas miss particular video and you'll be
00:17 able to claim like you don't know you're a genius
00:19 or you're on a certain divine of the internet or
00:22 whatever like that . So the order of operations is
00:24 just a set of rules in matter will tell you
00:26 the order in which the part of an equation have
00:29 to be done . So I'm going to show you
00:30 the importance of the order operations by giving you an
00:33 equation to solve right now . This equation is as
00:36 follows , two plus three times five , nice and
00:40 easy . But depending on how you approach is you
00:43 might get one of two answers as follows . So
00:45 first off you could approach this equation and just go
00:49 left to right . You can first get to and
00:51 you can add it to three . A case of
00:52 two plus three is equal to five . Once you've
00:55 done that you can then get this entire amount ,
00:57 there's two plus two is five and multiply by five
01:00 and you would get the answer of 25 that's one
01:03 way that you might approaches particular equation . However ,
01:05 there is another way you can approach this equation and
01:07 you could say what you're doing is you're getting two
01:10 and adding it to the result of three times five
01:13 , okay ? So three times five is equal to
01:16 15 and you're getting two and adding to it .
01:18 So two plus 15 is equal to 17 . So
01:22 as you can see both methods have correct calculations but
01:24 by approaching them from a different standpoint we get two
01:27 very different answers . So obviously math wouldn't work .
01:30 We went through and just had two different answers to
01:32 occur to the same question . We'd have a big
01:35 problem . So this is why we have this thing
01:37 called order of operations and the order of operations as
01:40 simple set of rules that tell you the order and
01:43 which equation must be done so that we all approach
01:45 an equation the same way and we get common results
01:47 . So what are these rules ? There are four
01:49 of them and they can be remembered really simply using
01:52 a couple of different acronyms depending upon where you are
01:54 from . The first one I'm going to give you
01:56 is Pet Mass . Uh , and that's something you
02:00 would use if you're a say in the United States
02:02 in Australia , we use body mass . Okay ,
02:05 means the same thing . We just have different words
02:07 for the same things are in Australia . But let's
02:09 go through what each of these mean right now .
02:11 The very first thing you do would be parentheses or
02:14 brackets . That's these guys . So in an equation
02:17 , if something is occurring inside the parentheses inside the
02:20 brackets , you would do this first . The next
02:23 thing you do is you would do any exponents and
02:26 sometimes incorrectly in Australia . I've seen teachers call this
02:29 next letter of but it actually stands for orders and
02:32 that's exactly the same as exponents . These are things
02:36 like squared , squared root cube , things like this
02:39 . Okay , the next thing you do is any
02:41 division multiplication and you would also do these in the
02:45 order in which they occur . That is you would
02:48 do them left to right . The last thing you
02:50 do is you would do any addition subtraction and once
02:54 again and you would just do these left to right
02:57 and there you go . This is the order pet
02:59 mass , body mass . So let's go through a
03:02 few examples of these . And they were going to
03:03 get to those viral math questions I told you we're
03:06 going to have a look at . So let's go
03:07 through a few examples of these in this order .
03:09 We'll have a look at some involving parentheses , then
03:11 some involving exponents , then division multiplication , addition ,
03:14 subtraction . Just to get used to the little last
03:16 subtleties that can occur in this particular set of rules
03:20 . So first off , let's have a look at
03:22 this example here , let's go seven times three plus
03:25 two . You're going to notice straightaway . We have
03:27 multiplication here . We have parentheses and we have addition
03:31 . So using pet mass and body mass , you'll
03:33 see the very first thing we do is we going
03:35 to do the stuff inside the parentheses here . So
03:38 if we do that , we're going to do three
03:40 plus 23 plus two is equal to five this stage
03:42 once we've worked out the stuff in the parentheses ,
03:44 it's pretty common . Just get rid of them .
03:46 Okay , so this leaves us with seven times 57
03:49 times five is equal 2 35 . That's what brackets
03:52 and parentheses usually just work as they group things together
03:55 and it's kind of like everything sitting in a little
03:57 basket altogether . All right , so let's go through
03:59 one more example using parenthesis . Okay , what about
04:02 we do this particular one ? We go three times
04:04 five in parenthesis and we add this to two times
04:08 four , also in parenthesis . How do we go
04:10 about solving this now ? It doesn't matter which order
04:13 you do these parentheses in , but they're going to
04:15 have to be sold first three times five is equal
04:18 to 15 , 2 times four is equal to eight
04:21 . The addition stays the same here . So 15
04:23 plus eight . We get the answer of 23 .
04:26 So that's about how you go using parentheses for this
04:29 particular rule . Let's get to some more examples now
04:31 . Looking at exponents . Okay , so nice .
04:34 Easy one to start off with . Let's see what
04:36 two times four squared is equal to just a little
04:40 refresher for squared here means four times for which is
04:45 going to equal 16 . So what do we have
04:48 here ? Two times 16 . Our answer is 32
04:51 . What about one more example of these ? What
04:54 about another one where we go ? Uh in parentheses
04:57 we're going to go five times three squared and we're
05:01 going to add to that . Get a bit bigger
05:02 now . So what do we do first here ?
05:04 We have a multiplication . We have parenthesis , we
05:06 have exponents . We have addition . Okay . And
05:09 the very first thing we're going to do is going
05:10 to do the stuff in parentheses here . Okay ,
05:12 so this stuff here within the parentheses , we have
05:15 this exponents . We have also multiplication . So we're
05:17 going to do the exponents first . This is going
05:19 to leave us with five times nine remaining in parenthesis
05:23 for the minute plus eight . So , I've just
05:24 worked out that exponent part of it . All right
05:26 . Now , what we do is we finished the
05:28 stuff in the parentheses five times nine is equal to
05:31 45 plus eight and we see what this equals .
05:34 The answer is 53 . All right , So just
05:37 watch out for this parenthesis . You can sort of
05:39 treat them as an equation within an equation . All
05:41 right . And then you still have to go through
05:43 those rules once you're in the parenthesis about which or
05:46 do you do things ? So last of all ,
05:49 we're going to have a look at these Final two
05:51 rules were basically saying we do division and multiplication before
05:55 we do any addition subtraction . So let's go back
05:58 to our very first example where I asked you what
06:01 two plus three times five is . You remember we
06:05 could either have had the answer of 22 or 17
06:08 depending on whether you did it in the right way
06:11 . So let's go through and now do this particular
06:14 question here . So we have addition and multiplication .
06:17 But you're going to see according to pet mass and
06:19 body mass . We do division multiplication first . So
06:22 this part here , the multiplication will be done first
06:24 . Three times five is 15 . This leaves us
06:27 with two plus 15 . Our answer was 17 ,
06:31 so the correct answer was 17 . Okay , So
06:34 let's go through one more example here before we get
06:36 to the viral math problems and this one's gonna be
06:39 a bit harder . I reckon I'm gonna make a
06:40 bit harder now about as hard as they might get
06:43 . And it's as follows , we're going to use
06:45 all our operations in this one so I might give
06:48 myself a bit of space and get rid of everything
06:51 so far . All right , okay , let's do
06:53 this now . We have eight plus three squared .
06:56 Let's multiply that by five . Let's take six off
06:59 this times two plus one from that . We divide
07:03 by two . Okay , that's pretty big . Right
07:05 . Whole bunch of nasty stuff going on there .
07:07 But using order of operations , we can work out
07:10 what's going on . So first off , what do
07:12 we do ? Anything in the parentheses or brackets ?
07:15 That's this one over here . So two plus one
07:17 is equal to three . I'm just going to rub
07:19 this out here and I'm going to put a three
07:22 there instead . All right . Now , what do
07:25 we do ? We've got nothing else in parentheses or
07:27 brackets . So we do any exponents or orders first
07:30 . Okay , So we have exponents here , which
07:33 is three squared , three squared is equal to three
07:36 times three which is equal to nine . This part
07:40 here , I can rub out and I'm going to
07:43 put a nine there instead . Now we're going to
07:45 go through and do any division multiplication from left to
07:49 right . So we have this particular division multiplication here
07:53 . We also have six times three divided by two
07:55 . So this entire partier uses division multiplication . So
08:00 let's go through and solve those . We have eight
08:03 plus there . Nine times five is equal to 45
08:07 . We're going to keep that symbol here . The
08:08 subtraction the same and we do this particular part .
08:11 Now there's six times three divided by two , as
08:14 I've said left to right . So six times three
08:17 is 18 divided by two is equal to nine .
08:20 Just watch out for that . You don't do division
08:23 first or you'll get an incorrect answer . Now what
08:25 we do is we just do addition subtraction from left
08:29 to right . So eight plus 45 is equal to
08:33 53 . And from that we're going to take nine
08:36 , our answer will be 44 . So how did
08:39 you go with that ? Pretty good . Now we're
08:41 going to get to these good little viral math questions
08:43 . Okay , so let's give these ago , I'll
08:45 give you two or three of these ones . Okay
08:48 , The Clickbait examples . Be careful . These are
08:50 tricky . That's why they're dividing the internet . Okay
08:53 , so an example of one that I've seen fairly
08:56 recently is this one here , Eight divided by two
09:00 and in brackets two plus to give this one a
09:03 go . Don't be too surprised if you've got all
09:06 this under your belt and you still get this one
09:08 incorrect because it does have a little trick to it
09:10 as you'd expect by something like this . So first
09:13 off we're going to do anything in parentheses first ,
09:16 so two plus two is equal to four . Okay
09:20 , So what do we have now ? We have
09:21 eight divided by two when they're sitting next to each
09:24 other like this , It means they're multiplying . Okay
09:27 . So this is what we have is eight divided
09:30 by two , which is equal to 44 times four
09:33 is equal to 16 . All right , So that's
09:37 the answer to this money , but I'm going to
09:38 show you where people commonly get this one wrong .
09:40 Eight divided by 22 plus two . This is where
09:45 people commonly get this wrong , what they do is
09:49 , and that's the correct answer here , but this
09:50 will be the incorrect answer . What they commonly do
09:53 is once again they do anything in parentheses or brackets
09:56 first . So they go two times two is equal
09:58 to four . Okay , So we could almost put
10:00 that there , put it to there and we got
10:02 eight divided by 22 times fourth . What they do
10:06 then do is quite commonly people just multiply these two
10:09 together as a matter of uh , just straight away
10:12 , just do it . That's two times four is
10:13 equal to eight . So eight divided by eight .
10:16 Don't get the answer one which is incorrect . Okay
10:19 . It's just really , really important here that once
10:21 you work this out , you realize that these guys
10:23 have to multiply , and a lot of these are
10:25 so called viral , dividing the internet , sort of
10:29 math problems . Have these sort of our tricks to
10:32 them . Let's go through another one . All right
10:34 . This one here . Nine take away three divided
10:38 by a third plus one . And we'll see what
10:41 that is equal to once again be really careful .
10:44 So first off , you can see it only has
10:47 subtraction division and addition . So we're going to do
10:50 this particular part here . First three divided by a
10:53 third . What is that ? So , if you
10:55 can imagine in one , if I break it up
10:57 into thirds , Okay , I'm going to do after
11:00 three things . Okay , how many thirds do we
11:02 have ? We have 123456789 So three divided by a
11:07 third is equal to nine . So , so far
11:11 we would have this would have nine take away nine
11:14 plus one . Pretty easy now . Right . Nine
11:17 take away nine is equal to zero plus one is
11:21 equal to one . All right . How'd you go
11:23 with that ? I can guarantee you there's actually a
11:25 little chance that I get one of these guys wrong
11:28 and there'll be a whole big bunch of arguments that
11:31 occur in the comment section because because that's what the
11:34 comment section is all about . And so what I
11:36 recommend is if you don't agree with any of these
11:38 , disagree comment , get an argument . We'll pin
11:40 up the debate and we'll see how it goes .
11:42 But keep it nice . Please keep it nice because
11:44 we're all likely to make mistakes sometimes when we're doing
11:46 that's okay . What about one more of these ?
11:49 Okay . What about this particular one ? Here we
11:51 will go . Six squared divided by two in brackets
11:57 , three plus four . So you're going to see
12:00 once again it has this particular element of the two
12:03 things sitting next to each other like this . So
12:05 let's rewrite that . Let's rewrite that as six squared
12:08 divided by two times three plus four . And we'll
12:13 see what that equals . The first thing we can
12:15 do now is we are going to do the exponents
12:18 . Okay , So what ? Six times six ?
12:21 Six times six is equal to 36 . 36 divided
12:25 by two times three plus four . All right .
12:30 Now we're going to do division multiplication left , right
12:34 , 36 divided by two is 18 , 18 times
12:38 three is equal to 54 . So this whole party
12:41 here is equal to 54 54 plus four . That's
12:46 our answer is going to be 58 . Alright .
12:49 I'm sure I'm gonna get some disagreements on these guys
12:52 . All right . What about one more ? Because
12:53 I'm a bit of a massacres here and then I'll
12:56 sign off for this week . Okay . What about
12:58 this one ? Seven plus seven divided by seven plus
13:02 seven times seven . Take away seven . And we'll
13:06 see where that equals that . Have a quick look
13:08 down to remember this one . All right . So
13:09 , what are we gonna do first ? You're going
13:11 to say ? Okay , we do . There's no
13:12 parentheses . There's no exponents . We're gonna do division
13:15 moral vacation first . So , we have some here
13:18 . We have some here . Let's do those first
13:20 . Okay , So seven divided by seven is equal
13:22 to 17 times seven is 49 . All right .
13:27 So let's then go seven plus seven plus 49 take
13:32 away seven . And we can just do this left
13:34 right now . Seven plus one is eight plus 49
13:38 is equal to 57 Take away seven . Our answer
13:42 is 50 . All right . So how did you
13:44 go with that ? All right . Uh it was
13:47 a pretty big video , but hopefully you found that
13:49 informative , please , if you don't agree with any
13:52 of the answers I've got here and I'm sure there'll
13:53 be a few people who say they don't put in
13:56 the comments , but just one of the further thing
13:57 just remember it's actually not a mistake if you're looking
14:00 at this and going well , you know , it
14:01 just depends on how you interpret . That's not entirely
14:04 correct . I don't think so anyway , because realistically
14:07 the equation should be written now because we all follow
14:10 this order of operations . The equation should be written
14:13 to fit the order of operations . Medically , some
14:16 of these more viral ones are written in a confusing
14:18 manner , but that's what they're all about right there
14:20 , there to create a discussion and to uh get
14:23 people a little bit interesting amount . So I actually
14:26 don't mind them very much . Anyway , tell us
14:27 what you thought of this video . Thank you for
14:30 watching . And a big shout out to my subscribers
14:32 . All right , and stay well out there .
14:34 Take care , see you next time . Bye .
