00:00 | Hi everyone . I'm jennifer from english with jennifer .
00:05 | Sometimes my language lessons are upbeat and playful . Other
00:09 | times I aim to be more thought provoking . This
00:13 | is going to be one of my more serious lessons
00:16 | , racism is not a light issue . It definitely
00:19 | falls into the category of sensitive topics . I asked
00:24 | that if you choose to post a comment on this
00:26 | video , please keep it respectful . Anything offensive or
00:31 | with profanity will be deleted . I'm not here to
00:36 | lecture anyone or politicize the topic . I'm an english
00:40 | language teacher and I'd like to give english language learners
00:44 | some relevant information and vocabulary so that they can follow
00:48 | and participate in discussions about race and racism . Yeah
01:00 | , The United States is experiencing a major period of
01:04 | social unrest at the moment . Whether you're in the
01:07 | US or not , you've probably seen many images of
01:10 | protests taking place in american cities . There's a lot
01:15 | of anger and frustration stemming from racism . That's the
01:20 | practice of judging others and mistreating others based on race
01:28 | . When americans are asked to fill out official forms
01:31 | and identify our race were usually given these choices White
01:37 | , black or african american , american , indian or
01:43 | Alaska , native , asian , native , Hawaiian or
01:50 | other pacific islander . And often there's a category called
01:56 | other , which we can choose if we're a mix
02:00 | or we may be allowed to check off more than
02:02 | one category . A questionnaire might also ask us if
02:09 | we're of hispanic or latino origin or not of hispanic
02:14 | or latino origin . The use of black and african
02:21 | american can be confusing . What you need to know
02:25 | is that both words are acceptable . Many consider african
02:29 | american to be a politically correct term , but the
02:33 | word black is not offensive . Some make the distinction
02:37 | that black is about race and african american is about
02:41 | ethnicity . Please know that the words colored and negro
02:45 | are outdated . They are offensive in the US today
02:52 | . Race and ethnicity can be quite complex in a
02:55 | diverse country . Like the US . I felt compelled
02:59 | to make this video because the reason unrest has made
03:03 | me reflect more on how being american is a different
03:07 | experience for people partly because of our different races .
03:13 | Mhm . Mhm . Yeah . Mhm . Mhm .
03:27 | Yeah . Mhm . I was born a U .
03:36 | S . Citizen . I grew up as a native
03:38 | english speaker . When most people look at me they
03:42 | see a white woman . My father came to the
03:46 | U . S . As a foreigner . He eventually
03:49 | got citizenship english for him is a second language .
03:55 | My father is a dark skinned south east asian man
03:59 | . So our experiences of being american have been different
04:03 | and yet I know we both love our country .
04:08 | one of the darker aspects of our country is racism
04:12 | right now . There's a lot of focus on what
04:14 | it means to be black in America , but racism
04:18 | has been experienced by other groups as well . Throughout
04:21 | our history , a person who discriminates against others based
04:28 | on race is a racist . This person has racist
04:35 | views racist attitudes and perhaps racist practices . A person
04:44 | can experience racism or be a victim of racism .
04:52 | A racist feels that one race is inferior and another
04:56 | is superior . In other words , they believe that
04:59 | some people are better than others simply because of race
05:05 | . If a racist is white and has a sense
05:09 | of superiority and believes that white people should have control
05:13 | . We identify this person as a white . Supremacist
05:19 | . Supremacist is related to the adjective supreme meaning being
05:24 | the highest or having the highest authority . So a
05:30 | supremacist believes in domination that is power or control over
05:35 | other races . Domination is the noun dominate is the
05:43 | verb . Some people try to dominate others . Superiority
05:52 | is the now superior is the adjective . Someone can
05:57 | feel superior or act superior . The recent protests in
06:05 | America are a call for justice . African americans or
06:09 | black americans want to live in peace . They want
06:13 | to enjoy freedom from unjust practices . Unjust is another
06:18 | word for unfair . We need to fight against unjust
06:24 | practices . We need to fight against racist practices .
06:29 | We need to fight against discrimination . We need to
06:33 | fight prejudice . Okay . Mhm . Uh huh .
06:48 | Yeah . Mhm . Mhm . Yeah . Yeah .
06:58 | As I understand prejudice is a matter of how you
07:02 | think and feel . A prejudiced person has an unfair
07:07 | dislike of another person or a whole other race ,
07:13 | discrimination takes the form of action . So a company
07:18 | that discriminates against women for example treats female job candidates
07:23 | and female employees unfairly . So discrimination can take different
07:29 | forms . For example , there can be sexual discrimination
07:33 | or racial discrimination . Yeah . The history of discrimination
07:40 | against African Americans goes back to the days of slavery
07:44 | , and racism took root in our laws immediately after
07:48 | the civil war ended in 1865 . Follow me on
07:52 | instagram , if you want to know more about us
07:55 | history , one of my upcoming clips will explain what
07:59 | Jim Crow laws were for now . Just know that
08:02 | we once had laws that made in equality for african
08:06 | americans legal for a long time in our country .
08:11 | Blacks and whites lived with racial segregation . That's the
08:15 | practice of keeping whites and blacks separate , including restrooms
08:21 | , drinking fountains and other public places . Did you
08:27 | know by the way that interracial marriages became legal in
08:31 | all us states ? Only in 1967 . The civil
08:38 | rights movement began in the mid 1900s and organizers led
08:43 | African Americans to fight for equal rights . They fought
08:49 | for social justice . but the fight to fully end
08:52 | racial discrimination continues today . Even before the civil rights
08:59 | movement , there were efforts to fight for justice and
09:02 | equality , the Naacp , formed in 1909 . This
09:08 | is the National Association for the advancement of coloured people
09:13 | . It's still probably the largest organization that fights against
09:16 | racism . Another group that has received global support is
09:23 | Black Lives Matter . This is both a movement and
09:27 | a global network of people who fight to stop violence
09:31 | against black communities . You've probably seen the Hashtag BLM
09:37 | that stands for Black Lives Matter . Mhm . Yeah
09:47 | . Okay . Mhm . Yeah , Civil rights leaders
10:05 | of the 1950s and 60s largely promoted the idea of
10:09 | peaceful protests and sit ins protest is the noun stress
10:16 | falls on the first syllable protest protests can also be
10:22 | the verb stress can fall on the first or second
10:26 | syllable protest protest . The people who do this action
10:32 | are protesters . Note The two different possible spellings .
10:39 | A protest might take the form of a march down
10:42 | the street . A sit in is when people sit
10:46 | in a public place and refuse to leave , they
10:50 | want their demands to be heard and met . A
10:56 | concern about large protests is crowd control . One measure
11:00 | a city or town can take is a curfew .
11:04 | That's when a mayor or a governor makes it illegal
11:07 | to be outside your home and on the streets after
11:10 | a certain time at night . Lately in cities with
11:16 | violent protests , there have been 8:00 curfews . A
11:22 | city can announce a curfew , set a curfew institute
11:27 | a curfew impose a curfew and later the curfew can
11:32 | be lifted . Note the contrast between a peaceful protest
11:38 | and a violent protest in the U . S .
11:42 | People have the right to protest peacefully , but the
11:46 | government has the right and the duty to prevent chaos
11:50 | that's complete disorder . Mayhem is another word for chaos
11:57 | . But mayhem suggests violence on top of disorder .
12:02 | So what's the difference between mayhem and anarchy ? As
12:09 | I understand ? Mayhem is a bunch of destructive actions
12:13 | , unlawful actions . A person or a group of
12:17 | people can create . Mayhem . Anarchy is the state
12:21 | in which people live without order or laws . Mhm
12:28 | . Mhm . Yeah . Yeah . Mhm . Yeah
12:43 | . Yeah . Yeah I mentioned that some U .
12:49 | S . Cities have used a curfew to help keep
12:52 | the protests peaceful and avoid violence . I've heard that
12:56 | some arrests have been made when people break curfew or
13:00 | violate the curfew . Other causes for arrest are looting
13:06 | and arson . Looting is stealing . It's the act
13:10 | of stealing during a violent protest or in wartime .
13:15 | Arson is the crime of setting fire to buildings or
13:19 | other objects like cars . Sadly we've witnessed a lot
13:25 | of looting and arson recently and although these crimes are
13:29 | taking place during the protests , we need to be
13:32 | careful not to group the peaceful protesters with the looters
13:36 | and arsonists . Most reporters are distinguishing between the angry
13:43 | mobs committing crimes and causing violence and the peaceful protesters
13:49 | . A mob is an angry group of people out
13:52 | of control , mobs create riots . A riot is
13:58 | when people are angry and out of control people who
14:01 | participate in riots are rioters . Many believe that the
14:08 | rioters , the looters and the arsonists are hijacking the
14:12 | peaceful protests and creating mayhem , hardly anyone is condoning
14:18 | the violence and the destruction we've been seeing . Condone
14:23 | means to approve of something . In fact , many
14:28 | people , even some members of the police force stand
14:31 | in solidarity with the peaceful protesters , solidarity means unity
14:40 | . Mhm . Okay , mm . Mhm . Yeah
14:56 | , yeah , mm . Mhm . A protest or
15:01 | riot usually has a trigger , that's an event that
15:05 | sets off a reaction recently . Americans witnessed the death
15:10 | of an unarmed african american man at the hands of
15:14 | a white police officer . This terrible event was captured
15:18 | on video . It triggered a strong reaction because it's
15:23 | connected to a larger issue of racism and police brutality
15:28 | . That's the excessive use of force by police officers
15:33 | . There are at least two arguments being made in
15:36 | connection to this horrific incident . One is that we
15:40 | have systemic racism that means that unfair practices are in
15:45 | our system , they're within our institutions . Is the
15:49 | police force is law enforcement full of racism . A
15:56 | counter argument in this case is that there are many
15:59 | police officers who are good public servants . People who
16:04 | take this position acknowledge that law enforcement needs to do
16:08 | a better job of training and get rid of those
16:11 | who are not capable of serving and protecting the communities
16:15 | and community members without excessive force . Which argument is
16:21 | right ? Where's the truth is the truth ? Somewhere
16:25 | in between ? Yeah . Mhm . Mhm . Mhm
16:53 | . Mhm . Some argue further that we need to
16:59 | fight against racial profiling . That's the practice of suspecting
17:04 | people of criminal behavior based on their race or ethnicity
17:10 | . I think it's true that people can too quickly
17:13 | and too easily make faulty assumptions about others . The
17:17 | question is , are we making assumptions based on race
17:21 | ? Are we giving people an equal opportunity and equal
17:25 | consideration in every situation ? Can we look for the
17:31 | best in people and stop assuming the worst ? Mm
17:40 | . Yeah . Mhm . Mhm , mm . Yeah
17:56 | , we'll end our lesson here . I hope you've
17:58 | gained the language to continue this discussion with others and
18:02 | to express your views on this topic . Actions will
18:06 | always speak louder than words . But I'd like to
18:09 | think that through honest , open discussion , we can
18:12 | take a step closer to achieving equality for all and
18:16 | to fostering respect for all people . If you found
18:20 | the lesson useful , please like and share this video
18:24 | as always . Thanks for watching and happy studies .
