00:01 | Hi everyone . I'm jennifer from english with jennifer .
00:04 | I know that you might expect me as a teacher
00:07 | to provide all the study tips , but actually the
00:11 | best tips I can offer come from my students ,
00:14 | learners like you over the years . I've had the
00:17 | pleasure of working with many different students and I've seen
00:21 | students meet with success . They've either told me what
00:25 | works for them or I've observed their behavior and seeing
00:29 | their efforts rewarded In this video . I'd like to
00:32 | share eight practices I've learned from successful English language learners
00:39 | . Yeah . Mm . First , don't make excuses
00:48 | . Make a plan , set your goals and decide
00:51 | how to get there . A teacher can help you
00:54 | as you make a study plan , but it's up
00:57 | to you to stick to it . The students who
01:00 | make progress are those with the qualities of self discipline
01:04 | and determination . Self discipline is when you make yourself
01:11 | do what you need to do . Determination is the
01:15 | desire to continue , even when it's hard and you
01:18 | may think about giving up . I know some of
01:24 | my Youtube subscribers by name , not because I've met
01:28 | them in person , but because they're on my channel
01:31 | every week . They watch my lessons . They comment
01:35 | , they try any task I give them . They
01:38 | have the self discipline to study each week and they
01:42 | have the determination to apply what they've learned 2nd don't
01:50 | fear mistakes , learn from them and at certain times
01:54 | let them go . One of my subscribers on Hollow
01:58 | recently gave a presentation and she shared her tips for
02:02 | learning english . She said that sometimes especially in the
02:06 | flow of conversation , you have to forget about mistakes
02:10 | and go on . I completely agree . You can't
02:16 | let your fear of mistakes hold you back from communicating
02:20 | . It's true . You should accept correction when it's
02:23 | offered constructively because feedback is something that you can reflect
02:27 | on , but try not to feel embarrassed or upset
02:31 | when you struggle . Instead be resilient . Resilient is
02:39 | being able to come back from failure . You get
02:42 | back up on your feet after you fall as the
02:45 | language learner show resilience . Third be resourceful as a
02:54 | communicator . Again , I'll share advice from my hollow
02:58 | subscribers who recently discussed the potential of verbal and non
03:03 | verbal language . If you can't find the right word
03:07 | in english , use another or use a few others
03:11 | that come close to what you want to say .
03:14 | Remember you can also use sounds , you can use
03:17 | gestures , you can even draw . Resourcefulness is a
03:21 | tool . Fourth , learn to laugh and cry in
03:28 | english . What do I mean by that ? Students
03:33 | who allow themselves to react emotionally to conversations and content
03:38 | in english have a better chance of learning retaining and
03:43 | using the language . Learning a language should be fun
03:47 | , so be open to being silly and playful ,
03:51 | but learning a language can be serious too . Talking
03:55 | about what angers you worries , you amuses you and
04:00 | inspires you . Makes language learning meaningful . It's about
04:05 | being open , open to new experiences . Openness is
04:10 | part of communication . Fifth go out of your comfort
04:18 | zone . Openness includes a willingness to talk about things
04:23 | you've never talked about and read about things you've never
04:26 | read about . Strong communicators become strong by gaining comfort
04:32 | through familiarity . They practice talking , they expand their
04:37 | circle of comfort by stepping outside that zone . I
04:42 | have private students who have studied with me long term
04:45 | and they continually allow me to recommend new topics to
04:49 | study and discuss . They trust me when I present
04:53 | them with new challenges , like making a presentation ,
04:56 | reading a commercial script or reading a novel as a
05:01 | learner , be adventurous , develop a sense of adventure
05:06 | , be willing to explore and experiment . Six embrace
05:14 | both the spoken and written language . I'm often impressed
05:18 | by learners who already have a solid foundation when they
05:21 | come to me for language support . One thing they
05:25 | almost always have in common is a love for reading
05:29 | . They've spent a lot of time reading books and
05:32 | articles as my private students . We can build on
05:35 | that knowledge , we can expand their vocabulary and develop
05:40 | both their oral and written expression . Don't focus entirely
05:46 | on speaking english , learn to be a good listener
05:50 | , reader and writer , be thorough in your studies
05:55 | . Don't leave out a certain skill just because you're
05:57 | not comfortable with it . Seventh aim to sound natural
06:05 | , but still be yourself . There's a lot of
06:08 | focus on repetition and imitation to achieve clear pronunciation .
06:14 | The goal , however , doesn't have to be accent
06:16 | elimination . You don't have to sound exactly like the
06:20 | teacher you're studying with . The goal can be accent
06:23 | reduction . You want to sound clear and natural so
06:28 | that your understood in conversation , we all have accents
06:34 | . I have an accent , I have an american
06:36 | accent , I have a northern accent . It's all
06:40 | part of who I am . I can serve as
06:43 | a model for you . But the influence from your
06:46 | first language is part of your identity . Have the
06:50 | confidence that you don't have to lose all that influence
06:54 | in order to be a successful english speaker . My
06:59 | private students have included business people , scientists , professors
07:04 | , and medical staff . They function in english speaking
07:08 | environments because they have the confidence to communicate . Finally
07:15 | , actively review what you've learned . I know that
07:19 | some learners take notes when they watch a Youtube video
07:22 | or a hollow livestream . Taking notes is one way
07:26 | to help you process new information . The next step
07:32 | is to apply the information . If it's a new
07:35 | word , try to use it in conversation . If
07:39 | it's a new grammar structure , try to create your
07:41 | own example Yeah . Than to make sure you don't
07:46 | forget it . You have to review the information and
07:49 | apply it again in new contexts . This is another
07:54 | example of being thorough and diligent , successful learners work
07:59 | hard and they don't skip important steps of the learning
08:03 | process . There isn't a shortcut to fluency . Can
08:09 | you remember all that in summary . Don't make excuses
08:15 | . Don't fear mistakes , be resourceful , learn to
08:21 | laugh and cry in english . Go out of your
08:24 | comfort zone , embrace both the spoken and written language
08:32 | . Aim to sound natural but still be yourself and
08:36 | actively review what you've learned . Try your best to
08:43 | develop the qualities that will lead to success . Have
08:49 | self discipline , show determination , show resilience , be
08:58 | resourceful , develop openness , have a sense of adventure
09:09 | , be thorough and diligent , develop your confidence .
09:16 | Be sure to check the video description . I'll include
09:19 | some resources that will help you put all these tips
09:22 | into action please like and share the video if you
