00:11 learning about the state of Kansas . You won't be
00:15 an expert on Kansas , but you'll know a lot
00:17 of cool facts about Kansas . So if somebody asks
00:20 you , do you know about the state of Kansas
00:21 ? You'll be like , of course , I saw
00:23 the video . The first thing we want to learn
00:27 about Kansas is where is it ? If you want
00:30 to visit Kansas , where do you need to go
00:35 ? Yeah , here is a map of the United
00:38 States . Do you happen to know where the state
00:41 of Kansas is ? Where is the state of Kansas
00:46 on the United States map ? Mhm . Yeah ,
00:51 the state of Kansas is right here . The state
00:54 of Kansas is right here in a region of the
00:57 United States called the midwest , Kansas is pretty much
01:05 smack dab in the middle of the continental United States
01:08 , isn't it ? Yeah , this is interesting .
01:13 Even though Kansas is in the middle of the United
01:15 States , it's only bordered by four states . Yeah
01:20 , All right , let's look at them . One
01:22 by one , bordering Kansas to the north is the
01:25 state of Nebraska . Then to the east is a
01:32 state of Missouri bordering Kansas . To the south is
01:38 the state of Oklahoma . Mhm . And bordering Kansas
01:44 to the west is the state of colorado . To
01:50 review . Kansas is pretty much in the middle of
01:53 the United States , in the region of the US
01:55 called the midwest . That was cool . Now we're
02:03 gonna look at two nicknames of the state of Kansas
02:06 so we can learn even more . Those two nicknames
02:12 for Kansas are the sunflower state and the wheat state
02:21 . All right , let's look at the first one
02:23 . Why is Kansas called the Sunflower state ? Well
02:30 , sunflowers grow all over the state of Kansas ,
02:34 especially in the western part of Kansas . Sunflowers are
02:38 everywhere . They grow in people's yards , they grow
02:45 on farms and they grow in the wild . Sunflowers
02:50 can get quite large . In fact , they can
02:52 grow as tall as nine ft . You can find
02:56 sunflowers that are nine ft tall , which is great
03:01 because they're very practical to , you can eat the
03:04 seeds and you can make sunflower oil from the seeds
03:07 . It's incredibly healthy . Mhm . Yeah . While
03:13 some flowers do grow in other states , Kansas will
03:15 always be the sunflower state . Okay , yeah ,
03:21 that's neat . But why is Kansas the wheat staked
03:25 the wheat state ? Well , Kansas grows a lot
03:31 of wheat a lot of weeks to give you some
03:34 idea , there are 8.8 million acres of wheat in
03:39 the state of Kansas , that's a whole lot .
03:44 As you might imagine , Kansas is one of the
03:47 largest producers of wheat in the United States . In
03:54 fact , each year , Kansas produces enough week to
03:57 bake 36 billion loaves of bread , 36 billion loaves
04:04 of bread . That's a ton of wheat . So
04:09 Kansas is the sunflower state and it's also known as
04:13 the wheat state . No , okay , now we're
04:20 gonna look at the flag of the state of Kansas
04:24 . The flag of the state of Kansas is a
04:26 blue flag with the state seal in the middle and
04:30 a sunflower on top of the state seal . Mhm
04:35 . The state seal in the middle of the flag
04:37 tells a little bit about the history of Kansas .
04:41 You can see the landscape with the rising sun .
04:44 The settlers cabin with a man plowing the field ,
04:48 a wagon train heading west . You can see native
04:52 americans hunting the american bison And you could see a
04:56 cluster of 34 stars near the top of the seal
05:01 . Those 34 stars represent the fact that Kansas was
05:06 the 34th state to join the United States . And
05:14 of course , you know why the sunflowers , their
05:17 , you know , Kansas is the sunflower state .
05:20 So there's a sunflower on top of the state seal
05:23 , on the flag of Kansas . All right now
05:28 we are going to learn about where to important places
05:32 are in the state of Kansas . The first is
05:35 the city of Topeka . Topeka is the capital of
05:40 Kansas . Then southwest of Topeka is the city of
05:47 Wichita . Wichita is the largest city in Kansas .
05:54 Wow ! Here is our final question . What is
05:58 the state bird of Kansas ? The state bird of
06:05 Kansas is the western meadow lark . And you can
06:08 see it's got an insect and it speaks because they
06:11 love insects . The western meadowlark loves open fields and
06:18 insects . So it's like insects are like candy bars
06:21 to the Western meadow large . You know , he's
06:23 like all right , I don't know why you're taking
06:25 my picture . Let me eat this insect in peace
06:29 . Okay . I just want to eat this insect
06:32 . The western meadowlark . Thanks for watching this homeschool
