00:58 of Alabama , you can find out who Alabama's neighbors
01:01 are . Let's start here bordering Alabama . To the
01:07 north is the state of Tennessee , then bordering Alabama
01:14 . To the east is the state of Georgia .

01:48 of the US called the Southeast . You are doing
01:55 an awesome job so far . Now we're going to
01:58 look at two nicknames of the state of Alabama that
02:01 will let us know even more about this really neat
02:04 state . There are two main nicknames of the state
02:09 of Alabama . The first is the heart of dixie
02:12 and the second is the Cotton State . And we're
02:16 going to be looking at both of these individually to
02:18 see why these are nicknames of Alabama . The first
02:23 nickname of Alabama is the heart of dixie . Yeah
02:27 , the heart of dixie . Mhm The word dixie
02:33 is an old word that refers to the south to
02:37 the southern region of the United States . Remember Alabama
02:45 is right here on the United States map . It's
02:48 right in the heart of the south . That's why
02:51 has the nickname . The heart of dixie . Alabama
02:58 is also called the Heart of Dixie because it played
03:01 such a huge role in the history of the south
03:08 . All right , well why is Alabama called the
03:10 cotton State ? Why is Alabama called the Cotton State
03:18 ? Well , cotton is one of the biggest crops
03:21 grown in the state of Alabama . Alabama is one
03:28 of the top producers of cotton in the United States
03:32 and it's grown all over Alabama . In fact 59
03:35 Out of the 67 counties in Alabama grow cotton .
03:43 In fact over £320 million pounds of cotton are grown
03:48 each year in Alabama . That is a lot of
03:52 cotton mm cotton is something soft and fluffy that grows
03:59 on the cotton plant . It's very fluffy . In
04:02 fact , a lot of clothes are made of cotton
04:05 . A lot of cloth is made of cotton .
04:07 Cotton has a lot of different uses and is a
04:10 very important crop To review . Alabama has two main
04:18 nicknames , the heart of Dixie and the cotton stay
04:24 . That's pretty interesting . If anyone ever says I'm
04:27 going to the heart of dixie or I'm going to
04:29 the cotton state . You know , they're talking about
04:32 Alabama . Now let's look at the flag of the
04:35 state of Alabama . Here is the flag of the
04:42 state of Alabama . The Alabama flag has a very
04:49 simple design . It's a white flag with a crimson
04:52 colored ST Andrew's cross . Anything the ST Andrew's cross
05:00 looks like the letter X . Doesn't it ? The
05:05 ST Andrew's cross is a symbol that was used a
05:08 lot by spain , a country that used to own
05:11 the land of Alabama . All right now we are
05:18 going to locate two major cities in the state of
05:21 Alabama . The first city we're gonna locate is the
05:25 city of Montgomery . Right here . Montgomery is the
05:29 capital of Alabama . Yeah , then further north and
05:34 a little to the west is the city of Birmingham
05:38 . Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama . Cool
05:46 . Here is our final question . What is the
05:49 state bird of Alabama ? Huh , That's a good
05:53 question . What is the state bird of Alabama ?
05:57 The state bird of Alabama is the yellow hammer .
06:02 That's a cool name for a bird , the yellow
06:05 hammer , They are easy to spot because of their
06:10 yellow color and they love open areas which is why
06:14 they like living in the state of Alabama and there
06:17 are a lot of them in Alabama . The yellow
06:23 hammer loves to eat seeds . That's the favorite food
06:27 of the yellow hammer . So if you see one
06:29 and you have some sunflower seeds or something like that
06:32 , go ahead to throw it out because the yellow
06:34 hammer would love to eat those seeds . It's true
