00:43 North Carolina is right here on the United States map
00:47 . The state of north Carolina is in a region
00:50 of the United States called the Southeast , uh the
00:54 Southeastern region of the United States . That's really cool
01:02 . Now we are going to take a few moments
01:04 to look at the different places . That border north
01:07 Carolina , bordering north Carolina to the east is a
01:12 large body of water called the atlantic ocean . That's
01:17 right . The atlantic ocean then bordering north Carolina to
01:24 the north is the state of Virginia . Okay ,
01:28 bordering north Carolina to the west is the state of
01:32 Tennessee . And then there are two states that border
01:38 north Carolina to the south . There's Georgia and then
01:42 there's south Carolina to review north Carolina is right here
01:50 on the United States map in a region of the
01:53 United States called the Southeast awesome . Now we're going
02:00 to learn even more about north Carolina by looking closely
02:04 at two nicknames that the state has . Yeah ,
02:09 north Carolina is called the tar heel state and north
02:14 Carolina is also called the Old North State . Pretty
02:18 cool nicknames . First of all , why is north
02:24 Carolina called the tar heel state ? Yeah , that's
02:27 an interesting nickname . Why is north Carolina called the
02:31 tar heel state . While there are a lot of
02:37 pine tree forests in the state of north Carolina ,
02:42 there is a sticky fluid that lives in pine trees
02:46 and other plants . To called sap sap from pine
02:53 trees can be used to make tar . Tar is
02:58 a thick , dark brown or black substance that can
03:02 be used for many different purposes . Mhm . In
03:08 colonial times , pine tar was used in ship building
03:13 . You see , the tar would seal the wooden
03:15 ship so that the wood wouldn't rot in the water
03:19 . Mhm . Mhm . For about 150 years ,
03:24 north Carolina lead the world in pine sap products like
03:29 tar , which is where the name the tar heel
03:32 state came from . Because there was so much tar
03:36 that was produced in north Carolina from the pine trees
03:42 . Very cool . Now , why is north Carolina
03:45 called the Old North Stay ? Well , north Carolina
03:51 and south Carolina used to be one . It used
03:54 to be called the Carolina colony . That's true .
03:58 The Carolina colony . Then in 17 10 they said
04:05 no more of this . Let's split this up .
04:08 Let's split this colony up . We'll have north Carolina
04:11 to the north , in south Carolina to the south
04:17 . North Carolina has been called the Old North State
04:21 ever since . Okay , now we are going to
04:26 look at the flag of the Old North State ,
04:29 the tar heel state north Carolina . Here is the
04:35 flag of the state of north Carolina . It's a
04:38 flag that has red , white and blue . Mhm
04:43 . Mhm . In the middle of the blue section
04:46 is a white star with the letter and on one
04:49 side and the letter C on the other representing the
04:52 initials of the state . And see There are also
04:57 two dates that are featured on the flag that are
05:00 very important to the history of North Carolina during the
05:03 time of the American Revolution . The first was the
05:07 Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence signed May 20 1775 , and
05:13 the Halifax resolves signed April 12 1776 , awesome .
05:23 Now we are going to locate two important places on
05:26 the map of North Carolina . The first place is
05:29 the city of Raleigh . Right here near the middle
05:32 of the state . Raleigh is the capital of north
05:35 Carolina , then a little further south and to the
05:39 west is the city of charlotte . Charlotte is the
05:43 largest city in north Carolina . Okay , here is
05:50 our final question . What is the state bird of
05:54 north Carolina ? The state bird of north Carolina is
05:59 the northern cardinal . The northern cardinal . It's an
06:03 easy birth to spot because of the red feathers .
06:07 Yeah , Northern cardinals love to sing and they are
06:13 very territorial . That means they protect the land that
06:17 they perceive as there's in fact they are so territorial
06:21 that a lot of times they run into windows because
06:23 they see their reflection and think it's another cardinal .
